Excerpt
Chapter Three

Ayden blinked languidly in the pitch-blackness. His breathing began to feel tight. The feeling of compression slowly paralyzed his entire system. The inside of his mind felt dark and utterly soundless. He could hear his own heartbeat. He tried to sit up, and hit his head, slowly realizing he was in a coffin. Soil slipped through the slits, assailing his eyes, nose, mouth, and body. He snorted, blowing out the dirt from his nose, and blinked repetitively to shake off the remainder. He felt his duffel bag between his legs. Air was precious right now. He could only hope help would arrive in time.

Like every other member of the League of Invisible Knights, Ayden had been trained to withstand all kinds of torture. The founders scouted him through the files of military, police, and intelligence organizations. Potential candidates were selected based on certain criteria. Above all, they must have heart. Anyone who failed the training program would have to repeat it. Traitors were dealt with severely.

Ayden agreed to participate in the League’s program because he felt betrayed by the country he loves. His resume impressed the secret echelons of Anonymous. The former Special Air Services (SAS) commando had single-handedly rescued a group of Pashtun women and children in southern Afghanistan from a human trafficking gang. The display of chivalry didn’t impress his superiors, especially since the culprits included Afghan officers. Lieutenant Ayden Tanner should have accepted the “culture” of the environment. Being a member of the League has some perks: a rent-free, three-bedroom apartment in Hampstead Village. Except for junk mail, his letterbox was always empty. The neighborhood stores and cafes knew him as John the Artist since he was always seen at the art shop buying supplies. He hung his artworks all over his apartment walls. But no one had ever seen it. He never brought guests home. He was also John the Reader at a nearby bookstore. He read fast, all kinds of genres, fiction and nonfiction.

He couldn’t recall how he ended up on the secret island. All he could remember was being kicked out of a bar one night in London after staring a drunken brawl. He found himself the next morning having coffee in the kitchen of a small cottage on the outskirts with a man who simply introduced himself as Mr. Somebody. He spent the next few days in the cottage. Then one day he woke up on a beach with a man in a Guy Fawkes mask staring down at him. No doubt, Mr. Somebody had drugged him. He learned the reason later. The island’s location must remain a secret. From the landscape, vegetation, and animals on it, he gathered he was still somewhere in the UK.

He spent the first three months in a wooden shack, isolated, disconnected from human contact. Rabbits, unusual looking butterflies and foxes kept him company. He was given basic amenities and supplies to survive alone. He soon discovered the value of isolation. It helped cleanse his thoughts and removed impurities inside the soul.

At the end of the isolation period, Ayden was taken to meet other candidates and the training began. Under the tutelage of no-nonsense instructors he learned martial arts, espionage strategies, holistic security strategy, language proficiency and shibboleth, espionage parlance and the art of disguise. Those were morning lessons. Afternoon lessons were more intensive. Lights out by ten.

Upon graduation, Ayden was given a special honor—death. An obituary in the newspaper reported his demise—a car accident during a road trip to Devon, it seems. His body was buried in an Anglican cemetery. Even though he grew up to become a non-believer, the charade was necessary. It was easily fabricated since both his parents were dead. No siblings or other relatives made it easier. The only son of an Anglican pastor and a housewife mother, their memory continued to linger in his mind. He credited them for teaching him values even though he didn’t agree with his father’s beliefs.

EXCERPT:

Austin pulled me past Jet City Comicon’s VIP waiting area to the front of the general admission crowd waiting to see the stars of Jamie. He seemed energized.

Several fan clubs gathered together at the front of the line, wearing buttons and holding banners.

He approached the throng and blew them kisses. “Lovely ladies!” Suddenly, Austin was Jamie, as played by Connor, right down to the convincing, and sexy, Scottish accent.

The cheering crowd felt his charisma and did a collective swoon. I was so close to him, I was nearly bowled over by the switch and power of personality.

“Beautiful lasses, I’m sorry to disappoint you. Especially as you’re so enthusiastic. But I’m no Connor Reid. I’m his long-lost American cousin.” He winked. “Or so we decided when I was tipping back Scotch with him last night.”

The crowd quieted, enthralled.

“That’s right.” He nodded and cocked his head the same way Connor did. “Get a good look at me up close.” He leaned in to one of the women nearest the cords holding the crowd back.

“Well? Austin asked in his best brogue. “Do I do him justice?”

The woman stared at him, scrutinizing him with breath held. “You may not be Connor, but you’re gorgeous and every bit the Jamie I imagined from reading the books.”

Austin took both of her hands in his. “Aye, you’re sweet to say so.” He lifted her right hand to his lips and brushed it with a kiss.

Austin stepped away from her and pulled me forward. “I’d like to introduce you to my Elinor. Even though she’s a Sassenach, isn’t she beautiful?”

“Take a bow,” he whispered to me, grabbing my hand and bowing with me. “This is Blair Edwards.” He gestured to my gown. “Look at this meticulous re-creation of Elinor’s dress she made!”

He spoke to the crowd again, dropping his accent now.

“We’re both cosplayers—we do this for the fun of it. And because we love Jamie!”

Excerpt from Chapter One:

The tortured should not dream.
Daydreams, nightmares, and illusions
Generate a hellish reality.
The mind plays games
The story begins

I have lived
around in different places, moving from an apartment to a friend’s house, to
somewhere else, because jobs are hard to come by and don’t generally pay much.
When I was in my twenties, I moved in with my grandparents. People used to call
my grandmother Mama Dorothy, and my grandfather was known as Paypuh Bill, for
dollar bill.
They needed
help—someone to take care of them if they got sick and needed a doctor right
away, or someone to run errands for them that were no longer easy for them to
do as they were getting on in years. And I was surely thankful for a clean
place to lay my head at night.
Mama Dorothy had
diabetes, and her foot was lame. It did not permit of much walking. Besides,
she weighed enough for three sizable women.
She had stopped
going to the hairdresser to have her hair straightened years before and decided
that having a woman come into her kitchen, bringing the strong acids and hot
irons used to straighten black hair was more torture than it was worth. So she
let her hair grow nappy. She had lived long enough, and Lord knew she had
suffered enough that she had earned the right to be comfortable.
Paypuh Bill was
rail thin. The hair on top of his head was mostly gone. Years before I moved
in, he had worked as a chauffeur for some rich white folks. He had also worked
washing dishes in an assortment of greasy spoons and fast-food restaurants.
Once, he had even worked as a bouncer in a strip joint. But that was a long
time ago. The part of his life that would never let him go were those terrible
years he had spent overseas as an enlisted man in the army. The fighting and
the killing gave him nightmares almost worse than any of the nightmares he had
from the Ku Klux Klan. And he’d never had to go overseas to experience any of
their wretched nonsense.
We sort of got
into a routine. I would truck off to work in the morning, to do whatever work I
had that month or that season, then I would come home to make sure there was
supper for the three of us. We usually ate sitting in the living room, watching
the news on television.

Mama Dorothy
would begin talking then. Sometimes she would yell at the newscaster, telling
him he was a blind idiot if he couldn’t see it was the end times coming for all
of us. The only book she ever read was the Bible. She would grab it from the
table beside her and thumb her way through it to Revelations—her favorite book
in the Bible. From that source, she would shout out the verses about wars, one
country attacking another, and the Antichrist who would soon show his face. She
hadn’t quite made up her mind who that infamous person would be, though there
were a few close contenders for the honor. However, the end times were surely
coming this very minute, and we all must repent so that we would be ready to
face the Lord when he came down to walk upon this earth again, with his fiery
sword, ready to distribute grave affliction to any and all who do not believe
in him. The Lord sounded like a dangerous fellow. He was not the kind of person
I would want to invite into my home.

Beacon Road Bedlam Week Blitz

Supernatural Thriller/Mystery
Date Published: 4/29/2017

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

When Sheriff Eustace Hildersham comes into possession of his father's once-lost revolver, he suspects there is more to the story than he remembers. He sets out on a personal investigation only to find himself caught between another family's grudge and a dogged reporter with malicious intent. Hildersham continues to search for the truth, not knowing it will lead to another appearance of the Driver and his phantom Camaro.

Book three in the experimental Driver series.

Excerpt

The pockmarked road stretched out to meet the gutter-ash gray of the horizon. Bleak and without end, it drew a bead to nowhere, anywhere. Dreary, leafless trees peppered chalky smudges of landscape on either side.

A black car tore down the road at a furious pace. The motor howled a guttural wail; the exhaust snarled in response. With a long hood and wide, fastback body, the Camaro sailed across the asphalt as if slung by a slingshot.

Behind the wheel, the Driver pressed his foot firm against the accelerator, his etched face set in grim persistence. He drove like he was being chased, like if he slowed even for a moment he would be overtaken.

A mop of shaggy hair fell across his forehead and neck. He wore the same red flannel as he had the day before, and the day before that. It was the same red flannel he had worn for the last eighteen years; he died wearing it.

He strives for a gritty realism and maintains an interest in the humanity of his characters. His hope is that readers find themselves haunted by his stories in the sense that the narrative sticks with them long after they've finished reading, leaving them with a subtle restlessness for more. Mr. Lewis is the author of "The Camaro Murders," "Lady in Flames," "Beacon Road Bedlam," "Power in the Hands of One," and "Godspeed, Carry My Bullet." He has been writing since 2002.

I Need You by Ashley Hampton blitz

I Need You
Ashley Hampton
(Southern Rock Lyrics Series #3)
Publication date: June 7th 2017
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance
Hannah Walker and Igor Finley have everything they need – family, friends, and a strong future together. Instead of happy and easy “I do’s,” there is last minute wedding drama and an uninvited and unexpected guest threatening to ruin it all. Will Hannah become Mrs. Igor Finley? Or will this be the end of Hannah and Finley?
EXCERPT:
I snuggled closer to Finley as my phone beeped again. Didn’t anyone sleep anymore? The text was from Stacy telling me they were leaving Raleigh and would arrive in about three hours. The caravan was much slower than they anticipated.
I wanted some alone time with Finley before they arrived. Because of his stupid no sex idea, I decided I would avoid temptation and get out of bed. Just a couple more days to wait. The best part – I could forever remind him what a dumb idea this was just in case he had any other brilliant ones like this in the future.
My feet hit the floor, and Finley groaned. “Don’t go,” he begged.
I giggled. “Your dumb idea, loverboy. Everyone is leaving Raleigh. We have a lot to do before this evening, and it’s time to get started. I’m going to shower.”
He pulled the comforter over his head.
“Oh, I turned the coffee pot on, by the way.”
Finley peeked his head out. “I fucking love you. You know the sexiest things to say.”
I knew he was still looking, so I took off my t-shirt and dropped it on the floor as I entered the bathroom. One catcall later, and I closed the shower door.
I was blow drying my hair when Finley brought me a cup of coffee. He half perched on the counter and waited for me to finish.
“Ah, my hero. Thanks, babe,” I leaned in for a kiss and grabbed my coffee cup instead. A sip of the hot liquid made every penny worth it for the new coffeemaker I could turn on with my phone. Finley allowed a second sip before he took my cup and placed it on the counter.
He sat on the edge of the tub and pulled me into his lap. “Can we talk before things get crazy today?”
I nodded even though I wanted to ignore all the serious, emotional topics for today and instead get lost in what promised to be a day full of fun and insanity.
“Everything on point for a good, fun day?” he asked.
“Yes, that’s what I want. I don’t want to get bogged down in the emotions. I just want to have a fun day with our family.” I swear sometimes I felt as if he knew me better than I knew myself.

Hard Work Will Pay Off Later. Laziness Pays Off Now.

Let's get one thing straight - Ivy Wilde is not a heroine. In fact, she's probably the last witch in the world who you'd call if you needed a magical helping hand. If it were down to Ivy, she'd spend all day every day on her sofa where she could watch TV, munch junk food and talk to her feline familiar to her heart's content.

However, when a bureaucratic disaster ends up with Ivy as the victim of a case of mistaken identity, she's yanked very unwillingly into Arcane Branch, the investigative department of the Hallowed Order of Magical Enlightenment. Her problems are quadrupled when a valuable object is stolen right from under the Order's noses. It doesn't exactly help that she's been magically bound to Adeptus Exemptus Raphael Winter. He might have piercing sapphire eyes and a body which a cover model would be proud of but, as far as Ivy's concerned, he's a walking advertisement for the joyless perils of too much witch-work. And if he makes her go to the gym again, she's definitely going to turn him into a frog.
