Tessa Egan is destined to die! When her powers as a witch are awakened, when she is hunted like so many before her. There is one problem: she doesn’t believe in destiny.

Adding to her already complicated life is a commanding guardian named Alec and his mysterious half-brother, Josh. The Prophecy of the Guardian’s Mark claims “Only a Guardian’s soulmate can see the Guardian’s mark.” Why can she can see both Findlay brothers’ marks? This is a Wonderful set of books. It really is a very short and quick read since there is a short poem, quote, or phrase per page. There are also some beautiful pictures throughout the book. Don't let the fact that this is a quick read take away from what the book really is about. The book is actually the writings of one man who took the path of addictions in life with drugs and alcohol. This book is about his journey back onto the right path of life.
Some of the pages are very dark and depressing, some of light. Each page if you really take time to red it and grasp its meaning can either have you n tears for the mans pain or cheering for his enlightenment. I can see this book a being interpreted differently by different people also. What one phrase may say to me may be totally opposite for the next person.
Knowing the back ground to the book does help to put it in a different context as well. Not knowing the man's struggle could also make you feel differently about what he is saying in his writings. The book is gripping and will make you think as well. Most of the book can be used with any personal issue. The poems, quotes, and phrases are not about his addictions, they are his thoughts at the moment of life, love, and day to day thinking. At least this is how I read it,

With master's degrees in education, special education, and counseling, Anjenique "Jen" Hughes is a high school English and math teacher who loves teaching and mentoring young people. She enjoys traveling and has worked with youth on five continents. Saying she is "young at heart" is an understatement; she is fluent in sarcasm, breaks eardrums with her teacher voice (students have complained when they were within earshot), and cracks sarcastic jokes with the best of her students. Her work with ethnically and socioeconomically diverse youth has inspired her to write books that appeal to a broad variety of students seeking stories of bravery, perseverance, loyalty, and success.
I understand this is the first in a trilogy. Do you have the stories already in your mind for the second and third? Will it definitely stop at three?
Yes ☺ I pretty much have the plot for the second book, which I have started, and the third is mapped out. It’s funny, because my brother had drilled into my head to know how the trilogy ended before I even started writing- he quoted other authors, such as J.K. Rowling, as someone who knew way ahead of time how she wanted her saga to conclude. I have a somewhat solid idea of how the third book ends; I’m sure it will morph over time before it’s published!
Dystopian novels are so appealing, perhaps because they seem so possible. What is the main appeal to you?
The main appeal to me is that palpable rush of trepidation I feel when I stop and realize that this could actually happen someday. Government control, genetically implanted technology, loss of freedom, censorship, etc. It’s not a scared type of fear, it’s more of a cautious awareness of a probable future. The “what if’s” of a dystopian genre are so exciting, because you can play with your created world in so many different ways. Also, there is something about the future, or the unknown, that is really intriguing.
What is the hardest part when writing for the young adult category?
Probably the hardest part is keeping the action continuously going in a manner that doesn’t cause them to drop the book on the floor and doze off! As a teacher in this day and age, I know how difficult it is to motivate students who would rather sit for 8 hours in freeway gridlock than pick up a book and actually read it. -__- Also challenging are keeping the dialogue witty and making sure there is zero cheesiness in the plot. ☺
What research is required when you are writing dystopian/futuristic stories? (Or is it mostly imagination?)
For me, a lot of it was my imagination. However, I did conduct research surrounding the military training segments. I also consulted a friend who is SWAT, as well as doing research on Navy Seals Ops.
What is the main lesson you would like your readers to learn from Sovereignty?
Basically, do NOT give up. Soldier on. Persevere. You can and WILL do it. No matter what the odds are, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. You too can be a resilient survivor, making your own glorious way in life!! ☺
Your story takes place hundreds of years in the future. Can you see your vision of our world happening? What do you think our world will be like fifty years from now?
Yes, I can see this happening in our world. Especially the identity chip implantation, for sure! Maybe not in fifty years, but definitely down the road. In fifty years from now, I see world problems such as starvation, war, earthquakes, etc becoming exponentially worse. I see terrorism increasing, even newer technology, possibly even having “flying cars” by then. ☺
It is a terrific debut novel. Have you written other manuscripts that led to this one?
Thank you so much!! I started two other books years ago, both based on true stories in my life that I never ended up finishing. I always knew I wanted to write a novel and have it published and with my propensity to drop projects, I’d have to say it’s a miracle that I even finished it!
Kelly had a history of picking the wrong guy, but destiny had its own twisted plan for her. She could not change what destiny had in store for her, but she could learn to accept it. With change came Eric and he was one-hundred percent Alpha bad boy. Kelly knew one thing when it came to Eric...
He drove her absolutely crazy.

And with other wolves now after her… he would protect her at all cost.
I am a Texas born wife, mother, and writer! I write words to enchant your soul and fill your heart with love. I write Historical Romance, Historical Paranormal Romance, and Contemporary Paranormal Romance.
Where do you get inspiration for your stories? I get inspiration from many places, things around me, music, and most important; my dreams.
How did you do research for your book? I use references and resources to find specific information I need to help make the surrounds more believable and true to life, but a lot of detail also comes from my imagination. The type or amount of research needed also depends on what genre I am writing.
Do you have another profession besides writing? Yes. :)
If you could go back in time, where would you go? There is not just one, but several eras I would like to be able to spend a few hours and explore.
What is your next project? I am currently working on completing book 3 in my Highland Chances Series!

Editor's review
Author J. Whitney Williams follows CARRIED AWAY—his surprisingly intelligent and deftly written debut—with a story that is even sexier, more thrilling and more enthralling than the first.
Again taking the reader on a trip across the world, meeting strange people in strange places via a prodigious narrator, CHOSEN PATH follows Yumi, a powerful and apparently dispassionate supporting character introduced in book one. But appearances deceive. Here, the reader is immersed in Yumi—into the very depths of her complex mind, her conflicted yet determined soul, her insatiable sex drive.
In CHOSEN PATH, Williams explores the very essence of what makes us human. The protagonist, a uniquely flawed yet extraordinarily likable woman of many talents and trades, demonstrates the jealousy and manipulation we see in ourselves and despise in others. At the same time, we’re drawn to Yumi. Geisha. Samurai. Assassin. Pseudo-royalty. Nothing happens to her; she creates. If we all shaped our own circumstances, our destinies, as adroitly as she, what paths would we choose and where would they lead us?
Excerpt:
At the most elegant teahouse in Gion Kobu, Matron Kazaharu lowered a teacup from her ageless face.
“Willow-sensei.” Miharu-chan’s whisper crept over her shoulder. “A man in a cheap suit just asked—”
Matron Kazaharu—Willow-sensei, as the students called her—did not need to hear the rest. “It breaks my heart, Ambassador, that I am called away. I must beg your forgiveness and your leave.”
All at the table stood as she did, and the guest spoke.
“Of course, Lady Willow-Wind. It has been such a privilege to…” Blah blah blah blah blah. She had to move fast.
She had warned Emi-chan to expect the detective’s eventual return, but it seemed he had arrived while she was away. Willow could only blame herself. She scheduled Miharu as Emi’s backup. Any other woman might have discerned her gambit at first sight of him, but that poor girl would not know a man had been seduced if he engraved his name on her forehead with a diamond-tipped erection.
When Miharu refused him, he would have bolted like a spooked deer. Willow could not recall having previously chased a man, but unusual circumstances require innovative techniques.
Shimizu. He, and his story, was simple. What Willow read of him moved her. Like so many, he had married for infatuation mistaken for love, and more than a decade passed before he came to know so. His wife bore him one child, a now-adult son, to whom he had become mostly estranged. Had there been no child, the poor soul could still be married, thinking infatuation the most love one could feel.
He lost himself in his work because someone once—perhaps no more than once—told him it was important. That—his naivety—drew her attention. Even in a job that showed him the worst parts of human nature, something good and decent still lived within him. It shone from his heart like the morning star.
He was handsome, too, handsome enough to be sexy, yet sex is but a single feather. Within minutes of their first meeting, Lady Willow-Wind had decided to spread her stately wings. She would return that star to the sky.
About the Author
A mathematician by training and computer programmer by trade, J. Whitney Williams lives and works under the X in Texas, thinking too much and speaking too little.
My first book, Carried Away, began as pure smut, but the mechanical hows-its of copulation do not entertain on their own. I want to know who and why.
Yumiko is a good example. She began with all the depth of an inflatable doll, the seductive geisha. Her career as a sex toy only lasted about ten minutes. Why was she there? Why was she seducing people? She must have had an ulterior motive, some plan as brilliant as it was nefarious. I gave her one, and she lived for several weeks as the vindictive geisha/attorney/hustler. What would her life be like, as such? What toll would it take on her, to be absolutely relentless? Those questions made Yumiko a dynamic character, and Chosen Path is how I answer them. Eighty-thousand words later, the inflatable geisha had grown a soul.
So stories will advance on their own, characters will think and act according to their own tendencies. With each pass of retelling, the characters grow a little bit deeper, like the wheel-ruts on a dirt road. Their definitions become sharper, and their actions change accordingly. It all comes from asking, “Why would a person do these things?” The more times you can ask why, the more interesting the characters, and the story, gets. Going back to Yumiko’s creation, after deciding she was swindling people, I ask why she would do so. She is viciously intelligent, and thinking so much more quickly than everyone around her has made her impatient. She saw her victims as inhibiting social progress with their blind adherence to tradition. Closed-mindedness makes her angry. And you wouldn’t like her when she’s angry…
In that way, finding the beginning and middle of a story is easier than finding its end. To find the end, I have to identify the theme. What is the novel about? What is the moral of the story? It is very much akin to sitting down at the end of each day and asking yourself what you should learn from your own experiences. Some days, the answers to that question can be profound.
- How did you do research for your book?
The emotional make-up of each character, though not the events of their lives, are threads from the tapestry of my own soul. As such, learning to empathize with them, to think the way they do, was only a matter of introspection. As for matters of fact, there is a tremendous number of wonderful sources that anyone can read for free. Anything an author can learn or experience adds depth and texture to his writing.
- Do you have another profession besides writing?
I write software, so perhaps I should answer “no.”
- If you could go back in time, where would you go?
The past might be fun to visit, but I would not want to live there. We are living in an amazing future, and, on balance, it gets better every day.
- What is your next project?
My first book left several loose ends I wanted to tie up. Yumiko’s story was only one of them, but it exploded into novel of its own. Fiction is like a system shoved out of equilibrium. Plot is the resolution of some struggle, the motion of a system returning to a steady state in which everyone is happy and wise. Some of my characters remain unhappy and unwise. They’ll have their chance.
