Sometimes, the need is just too deep.

Florel Ross has been mostly invisible since the death of her twin, who died twenty years ago at the hands of a serial killer. Obsessed with justice, Florel is willing to risk anything for the answers she craves: What goes on in the mind of a serial killer?

Excerpt #2:
My name is James “Jimmie” William Putnam, Jr. I apologize. I’m actually a very polite man. I just don’t do well on so little sleep or when my mind is racing. I should have introduced myself in the beginning. It was very sloppy of me. I hope you will forgive me. I’m not a perfect man by any stretch. With that said, I have to be candid with you. This is, after all, my story. I refuse to censor myself. So if you can’t handle it, I suggest you stop reading now. My version of things won’t be like the stupid newspaper articles referring readers to another page for more information with the worlds “in lieu of.” I collect those too, anything I can find written about them or me, tiny reminders of my Things. I keep them in a scrapbook. Momma would be pleased.
I’m thirty-five years old. I work as a clerk at Ducharme, (he’s dead) Tweed, (he’s the dead guy’s son by marriage) Hadley & Roderick. These guys, all four of them, think they own me. Sorry, but I’ll never be anyone’s Thing. Pretentious pricks think their shit doesn’t stink, all because they have the word esquire behind their names. All because their parents had the cash to send them to fancy schools with fancy names. All of them think they are God. None of them respect me.
They make fun of me for wearing a wedding band all these years from a woman who left me with maxed out credit cards and an ugly cat. That’s fine. I’m a man of my word, in spite of Shelia. The cat’s long gone; out back. They don’t get that. Although I want to scream at them that they can’t commit, I say nothing. They tell me I need to get out more, that my dick’s going to fall off if I don’t start using it soon. If they only knew. I press my lips together and smile. I tell them I swore off women years ago. They look at me with pity, shrug, and pile more work on me. I tell them I don’t have time to date. More work. More pity. More slavery.
It’s fine. I use it to my advantage. I allow them to underestimate me. I’m actually a really smart guy. Just because I got most of my smarts on the streets and at a community college, not the Ivy League, doesn’t mean I couldn’t beat a single one of them in a game of paper-push bankruptcy style law. The truth is, I do all their work for them anyway. Don’t let the stutter fool you, I’m a fast learner.
I’ve been here at the firm since 2005, back when I was with blissfully hopeful with Shelia. In those days it was a refuge for me. I didn’t mind coming in early to get away from the landlady who sang the national anthem to her cats and told us to keep the music down. It was a relief to be away from Shelia’s loud-mouthed cackling and endless phone calls to her even louder mother. I spent early mornings filing cases in massive cabinets out back. I miss those cabinets; everything in order, in its place, like my Things in the freezer. These days we use hard drives. There’s nothing to smell, touch, or check on.
I don’t get the same peace I once did at the office. It might be because the landlady’s gone and I haven’t heard from Shelia or her mother in years. Living alone, you don’t really need a place to escape to. Now coming to the firm is more of a chore. I’d rather be home with my Things out in the barn.
They say that two out of three ain’t bad. I wonder what they say about three out of four. Only one of the partners in in today. Roderick isn’t a bad guy. I get his complex and why he thinks he’s a god. He’s been treated that way since he was a kid. He still takes his mother to lunch on Thursdays at noon. It’s the one appointment he’s never late for.
I don’t mind slow days like these. They give me time for thinking and planning. I have a lot of work to do in that area. Normally, I take my time. Lately, my urges have been too strong. I’ve never collected as quickly as I’m about to now, with another Thing, tonight.
Cravings are strange like that. You can never tell exactly when they will come on. For me, killing is like craving ice cream. It might be why I keep my Things in the freezer, besides the obvious reasons. Anyway, I’m not sure if it’s the odd numbers or the other obsessions that are getting harder to ignore. Maybe it’s just that the cravings never go away once you get a taste for it, like hot fudge on a banana split. Maybe it’s that the last few have been such fighters, challenging me to work harder and harder to obtain them. I’ve always been a hard worker, never one to turn down a dare or challenge.
Even as a kid, there wasn’t much I wouldn’t do. When I did play with other kids in the neighborhood, because Momma forced me to, I was the kid who would climb the highest tree or pick up the fattest salamander bare-handed. I was the kid who drove past Mr. Vitous’ ‘Beware of Dogs’ and ‘No Trespassing’ signs to peek at the old man passed out in his chair. It’s probably when I got my fascination with watching things. Also, being the kid who would do anything helped take attention away from my stutter.
I’ve always been wired a little bit different. It’s not enough that anyone would notice, aside from my speech. Because of it, I’ve focused—hyper focused—on everything. It was a matter of survival and a lesson my Things could have learned from me. Even on the playground, I made sure things went my way. I had a group of kids who did what I said simply because they knew I’d keep things interesting. At the same time, I wished they’d go away. I didn’t see value in their requests for play dates. I didn’t have much fun hanging out with them after school. It was merely something to do to shut my mother up. Secretly, I wanted to be in my room reading and studying the encyclopedia. I like learning. And I learn fast. I told you that. I hope you are listening. Never judge a person by the way they talk. I’m a living example of that.
People always thought I was dumb. In third grade, I was in the remedial reading class, something Momma insisted on so I could keep being on disability. The truth was, I could read full length novels in my head but when it was my turn to read aloud, something in my brain shut down and my words came out twisted, probably guilt and worry about not wanting to betray Momma. Betrayal is the worst, and I still struggle with it now. I stuttered through the shortest of sentences and turned blood red when teachers said things like, “It’s okay, not everyone’s a reader.”
Momma would argue, telling them that I liked to read for fun. She didn’t mean it. She laughed, telling me they were dumb when we got in the car. She’d spend the whole drive home telling me every single thing she loved about me. She counted them, like I count my Things. Then she’d go back and say the same thing, threatening lawsuits if they didn’t do something more – testing, anything. They didn’t listen. They thought she was crazy as a bat. Momma was misunderstood too, a fact she called “intentional” and proof of her intelligence. She’d repeat it over and over in her gravelly voice. When she said it, she’d look at me to be sure I understood.
It was strange, people said, that I didn’t have a dad or a brother or sister to play with. “Only children are odd,” they’d say. Maybe you live up to the things people say about you. Either way, Momma taught me not to worry so much what people thought of me. I tried, I really did. Sometimes it even worked. Other times, even now, it doesn’t work so well.
Frankly, I was glad I didn’t have a sibling, or even a dad. Momma said only children were smarter, more capable of getting their way. Momma mostly left me alone. She had her hands full with her pills, bottles, and three-pack-a-day habit. Momma spent nights sipping on vodka and talking on the phone to any man she could get to listen. Luckily, she never brought them home for more than a month in a row.
See, that’s the thing. People thought of Momma as a bad mother. Truth was, she was perfect for me. She left me alone and never tried to change me. She only wanted to improve me. She told me the system sucked and that she was going to teach me how to work it. She said it was the key to survival and she only wanted the best for me. I believed her. Momma was always loyal.
She was the opposite of Shelia, who was always nagging. Momma collected too. Not my kind of Things though. She collected little figurines of animals. Her favorite was an orange glass cat. I still feel bad that I broke it when I was ten and buried it under her shed. When she died, I tried to go back and dig it up. I never did find it. I feel bad about that.
Tonight I’m going to even the score. Sweet sixteen has me on my toes. I jump when the phone rings. The anticipation is one of my favorite parts. The killing, well, that’s okay. Really, it’s about the planning and the control. We’ll get to that later, if you care to join me. You can be the cherry on top. I like having an audience.

Book Tour "Black Dawn" by Mallory McCartney

About the Book
Title: Black Dawn
Genre: YA/NA Fantasy
Author: Mallory McCartney

The end of an Empire, the rise of a Queen

Emory Fae enjoys leading a quiet, normal life. That is until two mysterious, and handsome soldiers show up at her apartment, and the life she knew is instantly whisked away. Memphis Carter and Brokk Foster come from the magical and war ridden world of Kiero, and upon Emory's arrival she will discover she is the long-lost heir to the Royal Line and is thrown into the Black Dawn Rebellion with a dynamic role to ignite the rebels and reclaim her throne.

With both men being darkly woven in her past Emory uncovers hidden secrets, a power held long dormant, and will soon realize there are worse things than supernatural humans, love, loss, betrayal, and a Mad King.

Some things are better left in the shadows

Excerpt 4
“I haven’t seen her since the meeting last night, Brokk, I can’t leave right now, we are alternating opponents with Emory. Time is of the essence right now.”
“Nyx is missing. A match is more important than that?”
Memphis frowned, noting his tone. He exhaled and shook his head. “She can take care of herself, Brokk…we all can. How do you know she is missing?”
Brokk filled Memphis in with the details he had been given. Memphis rubbed his face wearily.
“This isn’t the first time Nyx has gone venturing. She needs space—you of all people should understand that. You should be focused on what is ahead—helping Emory and the others get prepared for the fight. I need you to be focused, Brokk.”
Anger heated Brokk’s skin, setting his ears ringing. Swallowing hard, he said, “No. I will not stand back while Nyx is missing and you are too preoccupied to care! We should have scouts out, we should be looking for her. She was upset about you, and I’m worried about her.”
Memphis snarled at him, “You forget yourself, general. That was a command, not a request. You will forget Nyx, and focus.”
Brokk’s hands connected with Memphis’s chest, shoving him hard backward. Brokk was yelling now as his resolve cracked, “She loves you! And you used her to keep your bed warm until Emory was back. You use people for your own advantages, Memphis, and I’m done. Nyx told me what you did to Emory, manipulating her dreams. There is only one monster I see, brother, and he is standing in front of me. If you won’t go looking for Nyx, I will.”
He felt stupid for banking everything on her. His future. Their future. A month wasn’t enough time to prepare to take on the weight of confronting Adair, and with Nyx and Alby gone, depression hooded his thoughts. His body reacted before he could think anything through. Turning on his heels, he left the training room, not caring about the protests behind him. Not caring that Emory had been frozen in the ring as she took in his words. Memphis had everything he had always wanted—power, Emory, and a plan.
And it would kill them all.
Sweat dripped into his eyes as he stepped into the elevator. Air hissed around him, and a coldness ran through his veins, numbing his body. Numbing his heart.
He left the compartment and jogged down the twisting hallway, memories flying at him like bullets. Of an echo of a girl who couldn’t even look at him now, of a family long lost. Of a world that didn’t exist anymore. He barged through the door, slamming it shut. Running full tilt, he exploded in a flurry of emotion, four giant paws grinding into the earth, only propelling him faster. Scents overwhelmed him, and looking to the forest sprawling to the northeast, he galloped, leaving the hillside behind him, leaving the Academy behind him. He would find Nyx, and he would bring her home.

Excerpt
2 (NSFW)
            Sonnet
put water in the K-Carafe and listened to the hiss and gurgle of the brew as
she got some organic eggs and soy milk out to scramble. She decided to make
Griffith breakfast, too, even if it had to wait for him in the fridge. It was
nice to have someone to look after again.
            Hell,
after yesterday, he deserved it. She knew she shouldn’t entertain starting
something with him with medical school on the horizon, but after spending time
with him, a great weight had been lifted off her shoulders, and she was ready
to start fresh and tackle her workweek. She sang a little, opened the fridge,
and bent to retrieve the bacon from the bottom shelf. A sharp intake of breath
filled the silence from a few feet away.
            From
under her arm she saw Griff, half naked in black sweat bottoms with the Police
Academy logo. Her eyes drifted to the hard planes of his abs, a sculpted eight
pack most men would give their left nut for. His stacked chest rose and fell,
and his fists clenched. Like a current in the air, she could feel him trying to
keep it together.
            Her
gaze trailed past his ribs and flat stomach, down the sharp V of his hip
flexors, to the promise of what lay beneath.
            Finally,
her brain kicked in and she realized her bikini thong was on display with the globes
of her ass cheeks parted and raised in the air, like she was waiting for him to
grab hold and ride. Her hair chose the wrong moment to slide over her shoulder
and into her face, and he let out a strangled moan.
            Oh, God.
            She
stood and yanked the hem of her shirt down. “Jeez, I’m so sorry. I didn’t think you were up. I was just about to make
breakfast before I got changed.”
            He
gulped. Her eyes flicked to the hardened bulge of his cock, which tented
against his sweats. He looked like he wanted to devour her. “I…need to use the
bathroom,” he growled tightly, then marched down the hall and slammed the
bathroom door.
            She
looked at the exposed bottom half of her panties, and rolled her eyes. “Great,
Sonnet. Just great.” She turned off the stove, abandoned the breakfast food,
and made her way to her bedroom. A stifled moan escaped from behind the closed
bathroom door as she passed, and stopped her in her tracks.
            In
any other circumstance she wouldn’t give it a second thought—people moaned all
the time because they were tired or relieved—but she listened. It was a certain
kind of moan, one she made the first
night she’d met him when she touched herself.
            She
heard a distinctive rhythmic thwacking of flesh upon flesh, a series of muffled
pants, a grunt, and soft thud against the wall, and her pussy throbbed. She
clenched her thighs together and put her palm over her mouth.

Excerpt 3

“How can I help
you, ma’am?”
“Did you just
call me ma’am?” Abby blinked once before breaking in to peals of laughter. “You
did. Oh, aren’t you just adorable?” She waved away my answer before I could
offer it, continuing to laugh for another moment before sighing and shaking her
head. “You almost distracted me from why I’m here.”
“My punishment.”
I nodded, already resigning myself to my fate. “Okay. Let’s hear it.”
“I need you to
be watchful.”
“I beg your
pardon?” It was my turn to blink and frown, not quite able to hide my
confusion. “I’m not sure I follow.”
“There have
been… rumors.” She paused and I realized, with no small degree of shock, her
hesitation was real and not for show. “I wouldn’t call them disturbing, not
yet, but the potential is there.”
“Rumors about
what?” When she didn’t answer right away, I bit the inside of my cheek to keep
sighing in exasperation. Every time I thought I was finished with secrets and
lies, something happened to prove me wrong. “You have to tell me what I need to
watch for otherwise it’s pointless.”
“There are some
of Lilith’s girls who are… unhappy with the way she’s running her business.”
Abby uncrossed and recrossed her legs, her expression growing serious. “It
isn’t the first time people have been upset but there’s something different
this time around. Something which has Morning Star… concerned.”
“And you want me
to deal with it?” I couldn’t hold back my bark of laughter. “I’m sorry but
anything which worries the ruler of Hell is probably more than a little out of
my league.”
“Which is why
you’re not being tasked with solving the problem merely observing and reporting
back.” If her patience grew any more exaggerated there was a good chance she
would choke on it. “Surely that isn’t outside of your range of expertise.”
“No, but it’s
not as if I associate with anybody other than Lacey.” I paused. “Or Asmodeus.”
“Then you should
see about changing that, hmm?” She stood, drawing the panels of her coat
together before tying the belt in a precise, deliberate knot. “My understanding
is you’ve had a few disagreements with Kelly. Maybe you should take the high
road and bury the hatchet.”
“Right.” I
stared at her, certain she was telling me something but not sure what, exactly,
it was. “Any other people I should cozy up to?”
“I’m sure
Asmodeus is going to send an emissary to plead his case. It will, more than
likely, be Cam.” Her smile was once again cool and lovely and very, very
calculating. “Again, I know the two of you aren’t on the best of terms. Perhaps
you should see what you need to do in order to make amends.” Her smile widened
a fraction of an inch. “I’m sure you have a great deal of practice at
manipulating men to do what you want.”
“Some.” I stood,
clasping my hands at my waist and pasting on what I hoped would be considered a
pleasant, accommodating smile. “And when would you like for me to report to
you?”
“Let’s see in
one week—that’s a few days after Lilith takes up the collection, which should
give you time to have a few drinks with a few different people.” Abby’s smile
slipped in to something which seemed almost genuine. “I’ll confess, I expected
you to push back a little harder. I’m happy to see you don’t have nearly the
same problem with authority as your sister.”
“Joanne? Problem
with authority?” I snorted out a laugh. “Are we talking about the same woman?”
“I think once
you truly learn who your sister is, you’ll be as surprised as she was.” Abby
lifted her brows and gave me a slight nod. “In a week, then.”
I waited until
the smell of brimstone dissipated before dropping back to the sofa, my legs
suddenly more than a little weak. Resting my elbows on my knees, I cradled my
face in my hands, taking long, deep breaths.

What the hell
had I gotten myself in to?

Believable Characters

The two primary goals of any novelist are to create multidimensional, true-to-life characters, and to evoke emotions in the reader. No matter how riveting the plot or lush the language, if a writer does not fulfill these two objectives, he or she has failed.

Stephen King—like him or hate him—is a master at creating fascinating characters. He can take an ordinary person, place him or her in an extraordinary circumstance, and bring to life a truly interesting character. If you think that King can only work his magic with horror, then you should read The Green Mile or Shawshank Redemption.

When it comes to stirring emotions, a reader cannot be fully invested in a story if he or she doesn’t feel something. If your readers are lukewarm on the characters or don’t feel churning in their gut as they turn pages, then the writer has not met his or her responsibilities.

The interesting thing about emotions is that negative ones—fear, anxiety, concern, dread, trepidation—engage a reader more than warm and fuzzy emotions. When a character is walking into a dark room and the reader feels it in their bones that something evil is lurking, it builds much more drama and suspense if the reader cares about the character’s welfare.

Villains, in particular, are difficult to create and make believable. The biggest pitfall for a writer is trying to create a villain that is totally evil, devoid of even one redeeming quality. Pure evil doesn’t exist. A truly gifted novelist can create an evil character that is so charismatic and alluring, that the reader struggles whether to hate him or love him.

Remember, when you’re “creating” characters, you’re competing with God. And that’s a mighty tall order.
