“In a powerful story that spans decades, we see the beginning and the end of a lifetime of love, friendship, and devotion. From a chance encounter on Christmas Eve to a heart-wrenching vision on a beach decades later of the love of his life, we follow Johnathan Hays on a journey through his nearly 50 years on the Oregon Coast. This journey not only changes his own fate and future but the lives of others around him in unforeseen ways while he learns what being a husband, father, friend and man mean to him.

Through remarkable storytelling and letters that John himself writes, we get a glimpse at his past, future and the years in-between then and now. We see his broken soul, inner and outer frailty as he bravely moves forward with only his heart, love and hope guiding his way. We see the beginnings of familiar characters, friendships and bonds are formed, new beginnings are started and it all begins in a small diner.”

Excerpt
1

John woke up
later than usual. He slept through his alarm which was rare for him even in his
retirement. Even when he had nothing to do he always got up at 8:30 in the
morning. He groggily looked at his clock and saw that it was nearly ten. Then
he felt for Jake who had maneuvered himself down by his feet sometime in the
night.
“Time to get up
buddy!” John said as he nudged the old cocker spaniel. “Jake!” He repeated.
It was then that
he realized the way the dog was lying. He was awkwardly sprawled out and his
mouth was open. John sat up and scooched down toward the end of the bed. He
could feel the fear well up inside of him even before he knew; he knew. He put
his hand on Jakes side, feeling for a breath, a heartbeat or anything at all.
John jumped off
the bed and maneuvered to the other side then knelt on the floor in front of
the blonde and white dog. Jakes' eyes were closed tight and there was no
movement at all. He shook the dog harder, “No, no, no, please boy don’t you
leave me too, please old buddy please wake up, please!” he pleaded. Tears began
rolling out of John’s eyes and he was shaking.
“No, please no,
Jake no!” John said as he reached for his cell phone. He didn’t know who to
call he just knew he needed help. His own breathing became hard and he began
feeling dizzy.
He called his
son first, there was no answer but he left a frantic voicemail screaming for
help. He felt a sharp pain in his chest like he had never felt before. It was
getting harder to breathe. He found the number for his neighbor Thomas and hit
the dial button as he pulled the lifeless body of his dog, Jake, off the bed
and into his lap and held it tight. Stephanie answered the phone.
“Hi Joh—,” she
began.
“Please help,
please help me. Some…thing happened to Jake and my chest…please help…I can't.”
His words broke up and he dropped the phone with the line still open and
slumped onto the floor. Everything was getting foggy. The last thing he heard
was Stephanie screaming, “John, JOHN! I’m on my way stay awake!”

Stephanie and
Thomas, who happened to be home, ran out of their house as fast as they could
and down the dirt road towards their neighbor’s house. Along the way, Thomas
called 911 and then Andrew, John’s son. When they arrived, they found their
neighbor on his bedroom floor passed out and barely breathing. Thomas gently
pulled the dog away while his wife rolled the old man onto his back. Thomas
began giving John CPR while his wife called 911 again. A few minutes later they
could hear the sirens coming up the coast roads.
The entire time
Thomas never stopped CPR and his wife brushed the old man’s hair with her
finger while talking to him in her sweetest voice almost urging the old man
back from wherever he was going. The ambulance arrived and two men rushed into
the house and took over. One began barking into a walkie-talkie. A few minutes
later two more police cruisers pulled up. One was the county sheriff, a friend
of Thomas and the other was a state police officer.
While the EMS
crew worked on John, Thomas’ cell phone began ringing. It was Andrew, he
answered it and explained the situation.

Book Description:

Lieutenant Chris Williams and his platoon flee My Lai—the site of an unfathomable massacre during the Vietnam War—only to have their helicopter shot down over unchartered jungle. Disoriented and separated from the outside world, Williams faces the unenviable task of navigating the waylaid band of survivors to safety. But Vietnam has other plans…

Fear begins to trump logic. Specters of the assault call for them during the jungle nights. The escape mission descends in to mutiny as they discover an unknown threat unlike the Viet Cong hunts them from within the primitive environment.

Williams soon realizes that survival is not possible without first confronting the ghosts of My Lai…and the sins of their past.

Excerpt:

“So what’s the
plan now, LT?” Simmons moved his arms in a repetitive semicircle manner like he
was making a snow angel in the leaves. “We just going to sit here and wait for
the jungle to take us? Or do you think we’ll just die from boredom and
exhaustion?”
“Quiet,
Simmons,” Garcia said.
“We keep going.”
He didn’t want to let them know that they might be stalked by a tiger, which
would only cause more panic in the group.
“I guess there’s
only one answer right now,” Donovan said, resting back on his elbows.
“What’s that?”
Harris asked.
“We’re screwed.”
Donovan could summon a smile even in the direst of situations, thrusting his
hips in the air. “We’re completely and totally screwed. No chance at all.”
“Please don’t
say that,” Harris’s voice cracked.
“Donovan,
seriously? Why do you have to go on and say something stupid like that?”
Jackson nudged Donovan’s thigh. “You’re gonna scare the kid.”
“’Cause it’s
true. He’s right.” McEvoy smacked the back of his neck, smashing some insect
guts into his skin. “Look at us. Nobody wants to say it, but we’re lost. No
map. A useless compass. Not much food. Lost. And don’t get me started on these
bugs.” McEvoy slapped the back of his head again, this time catching the bug
and causing it to pop like a balloon. McEvoy gagged as he looked at his palm
before wiping it across his thigh.
“They sure seem
to like you,” Simmons said. “Must have some of that sweet boy blood.”
“Why do you have
to start when I’m worrying over here? And I don’t have any sweet boy blood.”
“Enough. No more
talk of death,” Williams said, tossing one of the river pebbles he kept in his
pocket at McEvoy. “No more talk of anything. We take a short sleep and get
going.”
“If you say so,
boss.” McEvoy squirmed as the rock plunked him on the shoulder.
“What I wouldn’t
give to listen to a little Doors right now. Just fade away with it all.”
Donovan looked up at the stars. “Seems appropriate to die while listening to
some good music
“How’s the
injury?” Garcia dropped to one knee and went to untie Williams’s makeshift
compression bandage. “I’m not sure how many we of these left. Maybe one.”
“Shouldn’t I ask
how your shoulder is doing?”
“No need to
worry about something small like that,” Garcia responded. “I’m not the one with
a rotting leg.”
“Since you put
it so gently.”
“You said it
yourself. Might as well be honest. We’re just a sideshow.”
“Touché.”
Williams knew there was reason to be concerned. He could smell the infection
from three feet away: rotting eggs. Based on Garcia’s tempered reaction, it
could only be getting worse.
“Hey, what about
the radio? We’re on higher ground. Might be worth giving it another shot.”
Harris, with his naïve youthfulness, held on to a simple hope.
“Go for it. Not
like it’s going to hurt,” Williams answered, drifting back to the memories in
his mind. Seagulls cawed from around Annapolis harbor, the zip of a fishing
line pulled as a fish splashed on the surface. It was only a pipedream.
“It ain’t even
turning on,” McEvoy said. He clicked the switch a few times, relying on a
miracle that would not happen.
“Oh, come on,”
Harris whined. He slapped the radio a few times—the old magic trick never quite
worked out for anyone with experience in electronics.
“Relax, guys.
That things as useless as both of you.” Donovan said, drumming his fingers
along the ground to the beat of whatever Doors song played in his head.
“Wait. Think I
got something.” McEvoy’s words called their attention. The radio whined as
McEvoy adjusted the knob until a muffled song broke through the static.
“What’s that?”
Jackson asked, leaning in as if he could listen better.
“I don’t…I don’t
know.” McEvoy honed in on the signal until a distinct muffled chant emerged.
The small troupe stared at each other, a mixture of confusion and disbelief as
the unknown words captivated them.
“It can’t be,”
Donovan said.
“Maybe some
local station?” Harris asked.
The chanting
grew more distinct with little melody to the deliberate words.
“A local
station…out here? No damned way.” Williams said, noticing the VC perking his
head up with a glaze covering his face. It was as if the chanting signaled the
VC to wake.
“These people
have some weird tastes,” Jackson said.
The troupe
gathered closer, exchanging glances between each other and the radio. The
lights flickered with the strength of the foreign words, the dials shifting
back and forth.
“You recognize
any of this?” Williams looked at McEvoy.
“I…no. It’s…too
old. An older dialect.” McEvoy shrugged.
The chanting
intensified, the chorus of foreign words almost shouting. The treetops around
them rustled as a stiff breeze suddenly rolled across their makeshift camp.
Williams looked back at their VC prisoner, who remained silent, transfixed by
the radio’s signal.
“This ain’t
right. None of this is right.” Harris withdrew from the contraption.
“Hold on to
yourself,” Donovan said. “Nothing we can do.”
Louder. Faster.
The radio shuddered with the strength of the signal.
“Turn if off.
Turn it off,” Garcia demanded.
The VC’s lips
started to move, almost in unison with the chanting, but he did not make a
sound.
“I’m trying.”
McEvoy twisted the dials, but the radio refused to obey.
Its housing
crackled then sparked, causing McEvoy’s arm to snap back. The sharp smell of
burnt rubber and metal poured out of the case. Then, with a pop and brilliant
flash, the radio went silent, its light fading to black. The VC then dropped
his head in concert with the chanting as it came to an abrupt halt.
“Jesus,” McEvoy
said, blowing on his finger.

“El Diablo,”
Garcia muttered in a voice low enough for only Williams to hear.

Mike Stewart is a bad boy.
Sleeping around. Boozing. Fighting with teammates.
Name a bad behavior and he’s done it—done it so well, in fact, that he almost tanked his career as a starting defensemen for the NHL’s San Francisco Gold.
But Mike is done with all that. He’s starting with a fresh foot forward and putting his past behind him.
That is, until his past quite literally reappears before his eyes.
Sara Jetty is just as beautiful as she was a decade before, but Mike hasn’t seen her since she left for her first Olympics and scored a gold medal in women’s figure skating. Now something has put shadows in her eyes, a familiar type of hurt he is all too well versed in.
This Sara wants nothing to do with him. Their easy friendship is gone and in its place is a hardened woman who’s nothing like the girl from his past.
Still, Mike hasn’t become a top defensemen in the NHL by being afraid of hard work, and he isn’t about to let Sara push him away. Come hell or high water, he’s going to crack her tough outer shell and find the sweet, innocent woman he’s lusted after and loved, in equal measure, for more than ten years.

My review:
This book was great. The kids really enjoyed looking at the pictures and I enjoyed reading it to them. I personally love children's book that include more then a cute story. Teaching a child life lessons is very important to me. Whether it be in a cute and gentle way or brash to an extent. This book has 3 stories in it. Each one teaches a lesson as well as letting the child enjoy it. Most kids love animals and this book is filled with them. I loved that this book features rescued animals. To me this is a very important lesson for children to learn young so it is instilled in them when they become pet parents. After all animals are just furry kids. They in some instances are better then human friends and family.

Author Bio

“Writing is my creative outlet,” says Laurie Hyman, author of Sweet Tales: The Adventures of Brittany and Lace.  The children’s series is written from the perspectives of cats, dogs, horses, woodchucks, coyotes, squirrels, crows and various other animals.  The stories explore universal themes such as family, friends, bullying, animal cruelty, abandonment and rescue, and the environment.  These books will appeal to readers of all ages, says Laurie, who comes from a creative family.  Her father was a writer and her brother, David Saperstein, wrote the novel on which the hit movie, Cocoon was based.
But her creativity doesn’t begin and end with books.  Laurie has extensive experience representing recording artists such as Barry Manilow and working as a producer and program coordinator for film, television, music and video companies.  She was assistant producer on Nurse, the acclaimed 1981 CBS network drama starring Michael Learned and Robert Reed.  Laurie also associate produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles—Coming Out of Their Shells, a documentary about the making of the live musical tour based on the hit movies and TV series.
Laurie Hyman is passionate about the creative process, which she finds fascinating and fulfilling.  She has also worked extensively as a senior health care advocate and she developed the Health Navigator Program for ReServe Inc. where she supervised several volunteers for NYC hospitals.  She also volunteered as an advocate for the American Red Cross, March of Dimes, and MRC (Medicare Rights Center) in health care and senior care advocacy.  She currently lives in New York State with her husband Micky and their two cats Maggie and Lily.

Book Excerpts
Excerpt: Pet Rescue

The kitten, now fully awake and alert, tilted her head, questioning where the woman was going. As they studied one another, the young cat’s eyes turned a deeper shade of green.

Love knew at that moment that this was her ‘Lace’. “Don’t worry. I’ll be back for you.”

Now Love was angry. “This is criminal!” she hissed to her husband, “I thought they were so cute, lying in a pile like that, but now I know it’s not cute at all! They’re huddled that way to try and stay warm! It’s cruel. They’re obviously sick and miserable!”

“I think you’re right, Love. Let’s get out of here.”

When the couple left, the kittens quickly huddled together in a tight circle.

“Do you think they’ll come back?” asked the white one.

“I think so,” said the tiger tomcat. “And I bet they take you out of here. As for the rest of us, who knows?”

“You’ll all be fine,” barked the yellow Lab pup from his cage on the shelf across from the kittens’ case. “I’m Bert. I’m from the same farm as you. We were all supposed to go to the animal hospital last week when we left the farm, but then the truck stopped for some reason. A bunch of us pups and your litter were taken off and we got moved to another truck and brought here. This place is diseased and filthy. That’s why we’re all getting sick.”

“What does sick mean?” asked the grey kitten. The poor little thing sneezed and fell over.

“It means we need to get rescued quickly or no one will want to give us a proper home. But, I believe those people are going to save us,” said the pup with certainty.

Soft Pleasure by Dany Rae Miller blitz

Soft Pleasure

(Wolven Moon #4)
Publication date: May 3rd 2017
Genres: Adult, Paranormal

The truth can either ruin you or set you free.

SOPHIA SOFT

Freaks like me can’t do relationships, not when there are huge parts of yourself you can’t let anyone see. No matter how strong the pull between us, no matter that he sets my body on fire with his touch, I can’t have Gunnar Bodolf. But he knows things about me and my past – things I’m desperate to know, too.

GUNNAR BODOLF

The chemistry between us is exquisite. Powerful. Primitive. Sophia Soft wants me as much as I want her. I came back to Aspen a lone wolf with one mission, to connect the hereditary witch with her forgotten power. Now wild fantasies have raised another tantalizing desire, get her into my bed and make her mine.

Truth. Power. Lust. Not necessarily in that order.

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:

While I set out containers of food, Sophia goes off somewhere in her mind. I wonder what she sees. Full-fledged memories, or glimpses of her childhood here? Not that horrific night. That much I can tell by her expression.

I’ve only set foot on this property one other time — the night the Softs were massacred. I pour myself a large portion of wine as well and allow buried memories to surface.

Barely a teenager at thirteen, my parents allowed me to travel from Sweden to visit my Colorado relatives on my own. That horrible night, all able-bodied adult wolves were in Glenwood Springs, responding to intelligence from the Granite pack that hunters would converge there. I wanted to go, too. But, no. I was relegated to help a babysitter look after an eight-year-old Carine.

The hunters did indeed show up in Glenwood. However, another group swiftly descended on Aspen — on the Softs, specifically.

Was it a coincidence? I never believed that. It had to have been a concerted plan to lure wolves away from Aspen and leave the eminent family unprotected.

I look over at Sophia. Her wine glass is almost empty.

“More?” I hold the bottle up, ready to pour.

She shakes her head no.

“You’re wondering why I brought you here.” My candor brings her gaze to mine.

Curiosity and apprehension are among the emotions that flit across her expression. Distrust emerges and stays.

Eyes narrowed, she looks away from me. “That’s just one question I have.”

“This is where you must be to connect to the old crone and to your legacy.” I let the rest hang. She’s smart. She’ll connect the dots she already has in her sights and the rest as they appear before her.

“You knew about my connection to this place when we looked at that property.” She points across the water.

I nod and smile. “In addition to being incredibly sexy, you’re a very perceptive witch.”

“Just because you saw a few books on my bookshelf doesn’t mean anything.”

“I know what you are, Sophia.”

She shakes her head and rolls her eyes. Gently, I cup her beautiful face with both of my hands to look into those gorgeous eyes. There’s a vulnerability in their depths.

“You are a witch.”

Licking her lips, she simply stares at me.

“Trust me, my beauty. You want answers about yourself? The old crone is an excellent place to start. You just need to tune in to her. This is the best place on Earth to do that.”

Contemplating my words, a spark of curiosity burns away most of the vulnerability. As I suspected, she’s ravenous for knowledge. So desperate for it that it’s palpable and overrides the rest of her emotions.

“Come.” I stand, hold out a hand to help her up. “Let me show you something.”

“I’ve been over this property dozens of times. There’s nothing new that you can show me.”

An owl hoots as the full moon continues its rise over the eastern ridge of the mountain. The strong scent of the columbine combined with Sophia’s natural scent is exceedingly provocative. It’s hard to resist, but resist I must. Right now, I must focus on connecting her to her power.

“Humor me,” I say softly. “It’s very important –– to you. Please, Sophia.”

Her hesitation has weakened considerably. Finally, with a resigned sigh, she succumbs to her need to know. Clasping my hand, she rises gracefully to her feet.

“We might need your worship tools,” I say.

She lifts her tote.

Leaving the lanterns with the blanket, I grab my backpack. Hand in hand, we walk just a few yards to a circle laid out in stones and surrounded by the white trunks of aspen trees.

“I’ve been here. It’s a sacred circle,” she says.

I nod. “Very good. You are correct. It is a witches’ circle – an old, venerable one.” I lead her over the stones.

When her feet touch the ground in the circle, a soft breeze waifs up from below. I’m astonished. Her power is already engaged with the energy here.

“Aside from knowing it was even here, how do you know how old it is?” She asks me.

“Good questions. The answers to which you will know soon.”

She squints her eyes at me.

“Let’s just take it step by step. I don’t want to overwhelm you.”

Her eyes narrow further.

I sigh in frustration, wishing I had time to go slower with her.

“Alright. Will you be satisfied with a short explanation and have the details filled in at a later time?” I smile, needing to keep it light.

She shrugs and nods.

“Was that a yes or no? If a no, then I’ll tell you nothing.” I smirk. Despite the gravity of the moment, I enjoy teasing her.

Frustrated herself, she rolls her eyes at me. “Yes.”

I laugh. “Has Carine shared the wolf creation lore with you?”

Dry now, Sophia’s gorgeous hair flutters around her as she shakes her head no.

“While lycanthropy is mentioned by the ancient Greeks, it was in reference to people who had some wolf traits — exceptionally strong, exceedingly hairy, ravenous appetites and the like. It isn’t until much later, during the fifteenth century that you’ll find written accounts of shapeshifting humans to wolves and wolves to humans.”

With a shadow of amusement, she raises an eyebrow. “This is the short version of how you knew this circle existed?”

“Yes, baby,” I chuckle. “Here’s the punch line. The ancient ones, the witches, needed protection from the hunters during the inquisition so they created us — werewolves from a race of lycanthropic men and women. In the generations since, a few Lycans have mated outside their species and a few of their children either lost the power to shift or went rogue. The core group, the purebreds, called sovereign wolves, remain loyal.”

Watching her process that bit of information, I pause for a moment.

“My ancestors were created by your ancestors. I’m pure and I’m your protector, Sophia.”

Her expressive eyes hide nothing. She doesn’t believe me. “Then where the hell have you been all my life?” She jokes.

I chuckle. “You haven’t needed me until now.”

She licks her lips. “Does that explain why we’re so attracted to one another?”

“No, älskling. That’s something else entirely.” The rising moon has cleared the mountain.

“Face directly east,” I say.

She turns slightly. “Is this right?”

“Well, lets see.” I take a compass from the backpack, stand behind her, wrapping one arm around her waist. With the compass in my other hand, I reach out in front of her so we can both see the reading.

“Perfect.” I smile. “As I said, a very perceptive witch.”

This close, her scent is irresistible. I slip the compass in my pocket and pull her softness back to my chest. I kiss the nape of her neck, justifying it with her need to relax. “Mmmmm. I get so distracted by you.”

She leans back further, bares more of her throat for my lips.

“The witch teases me, again.” I chuckle, but give her what she wants – a trail of kisses from her ear to her shoulder. My fangs drop. Lightly and careful not to break skin, I bite the tender spot where shoulder and throat meet, licking the nibble away.

Soon. We will mate soon.

Her nipples tighten under her bodice. I growl and slide my right hand up to cup her left breast, slowly and softly my thumb strokes the sensitive peak. She moans for me. I nuzzle her ear.

“Sweet Sophia. I must step away.” I release her, walk around to look into her smoldering eyes. “It’s only our second date and here you are seducing me, again.”

She’s all indignant. “Me seducing you? I’m not the one kissing necks.” A tiny smile lifts one corner of her mouth.

My effort to relax her seems to have worked, never mind my uncomfortable hard-on.

“Says the one who lured me into her bathroom when she was gloriously naked and dripping wet.”

And I’m not talking about the shower water.

“That wasn’t on purpose.” She blushes.

“No? Still I’m faulting you for having such an intoxicating scent.” I lean in to inhale. “I can smell your arousal, you know.”

Her breath catches, eyes dilate even more with desire.

“Mmmm. I’m like a hapless bee lured by a succulent flower.” I close my eyes, inhale again. “I can’t wait to taste your nectar.”

Excerpt

“What’ll you have?”
The voice was deep and masculine, and as I turned to find the man who owned it, a small gasp escaped my lips. Broad shoulders tanned by the sun stood out against his cream tank top, and dark brown hair fell in waves to about his chin. He was the most handsome man I had ever seen, but it was his piercing green eyes I couldn’t seem to look away from. He stared at me expectantly, an empty glass in his hand as he waited for my order.
“Uh, tequila sunrise,” I stammered as the blush climbed my cheeks. Had he heard my gasp? I tried to look away, but his gaze was a magnet drawing my eyes back to him.
“Tequila, huh?” His lips pulled into a smile revealing perfectly white teeth, and my heart fluttered in my chest.
“It’s my weakness.” My lips parted, and my tongue darted across her bottom lip. I wondered how his lips would feel against mine. Apparently, he was a weakness for me as well.
“In that case, how about a double shot?” The wink he flashed solidified the notion he was flirting with me, but I couldn’t tell whether it was because he liked me or because it was part of the job description.
“Sure.” My heartbeat magnified in my ears, and despite his magnetic pull, I forced my attention away from the bartender and back to the crowd, hoping to hide the red on my face.  Though the bartender was easily the most handsome man there, several other nice looking gentlemen filled the area. Most appeared to be chatting with women, but one man sat alone, tapping at his laptop and nursing a beer.
