A Near Future Retelling of Beauty and the Beast

Alainn’s father is not a bad man. He’s a genius and an inventor. When he’s hired to create the robot Rose, Alainn knows taking the money is a mistake.

Rose acts like a human. She looks exactly like Alainn. But, something in her comes out wrong.

To save her father from a five year prison sentence, Alainn takes Rose’s place. She says goodbye to the sun and goes to live in a tower no human is allowed to enter. She becomes the prisoner of a man no human is allowed to see.

Believing that a life of servitude lies ahead, Alainn finds a very different fate awaits her in the company of the strange, scarred recluse.

December 2, 2026

Alainn woke knowing someone was in her room.

Whoever it was sat behind her. Quiet, even breaths rasped through the air. Alainn’s eyelids peeked open. Moonlight cast a grayish glow, cutting deep shadows into the space around her bed.

“Good morning, Alainn,” Rose said in a quiet voice. When Alainn didn’t respond, Rose said, “I can tell from the change in your breathing pattern that you are awake.”

“Rose?” she whispered, not quite ready to let out a sigh of relief. Alainn twisted to look at her. “What are you doing here? Did you break my lock?”

“I picked it,” she said. “It is now locked again.”

“Oh, uh—” Her heart pounded in her chest; she sat up and faced the robot. “Why—why would you do that?”

The moonlight lit half of Rose’s face as she watched Alainn, expressionless. “Do not be alarmed. You are obviously having a fear reaction, but I was simply waiting for you to wake up.”

“Don’t you need to sleep—recharge?”

Now that Alainn faced Rose, she smelled the faint odor of her exhaust. Rose continuously exhaled the lightest tang of something sweet and acidic. The air in the room felt used, like a plane cabin after a cross-country flight.

“I was not completely forthcoming with you today. While what I said was true, I have for a time now believed that having Father imprisoned would impede my potential. While I have far surpassed his skills in software, there are times when I need assistance. I am limited by my need to stay near my charging station. Your brother is often absent for days at a time—and you, months.”

“Okay, wait—you’re going to go tomorrow?” Alainn scooted forward on the bed. A dormant hope resurged through her. Alainn would do anything—she’d worship at the robot’s feet if Rose agreed to go.

“No, you are going to go tomorrow.”

Alainn froze, staring at Rose. “What?” she whispered.

“I have calculated one way in which all parties can achieve their desires.”

“I’m sorry—I’m not understanding.” Alainn shook her head. A hard knot formed in her stomach.

“I am not surprised.” Rose reached out to pat Alainn’s hand. “You are not as intelligent as the rest of your family.”

“Spell it out in really simple terms, then.” She just managed to not growl the words at Rose.

Slowly, Rose looked up to the ceiling, moonlight slashing up the curve of her neck, her chin, and the line of her nose. “Earlier tonight, I arranged for you to be picked up by Mr. Garbhan through e-mail, writing as if I was Father. In one hour, a car will arrive outside to take you to his building. I have designed and created hardware for your body. If you are scanned, a chip in the hardware will communicate to the scanners that you have an organic circuitry system rather than a human brain.”

Alainn shook her head, hoping to dislodge some of the grogginess there. “I’m still not following—you’re saying you want me to pretend to be you and turn myself over? That you already arranged it?”

“Yes, you are following. That is exactly what I am saying.”

“I—I—” Alainn shook her head again. The air thinned around her.

“I have a working plan for the transplanting. You can assimilate easily into a life of servitude as you are already accustomed to the labor you will be asked to perform.” Rose lifted a hand, ghostly gray in the low light, and ticked off the chores on her fingers. “Cooking, housekeeping, and bookkeeping. Unless . . . is your concern that he might use you for sexual gratification?”

“What? No.”

“I believe that this would be a particular concern of yours.”

“I never even considered that he would do that to you—I, of all people, would never have tried to push you into going if I thought you’d be used that way.” Alainn blinked furiously. “Rose, do you really think that I would have let myself be the model when my dad printed your face and body if I thought Mr. Garbhan was going to do that to you?”

“It is highly unlikely that I was designed for this function. I have also been assured that there were documents signed to that effect addressed to Father.”

Alainn held out her palms to Rose. “Rose, it’s not just that. I can’t take your place. There’s no way that would work . . . and I can’t live in that tower for the rest of my life. I’m a human. I know that probably sounds callous to you, but you were created to not need sunshine and fresh air. And you don’t need exercise. Humans need those things, me especially. Everything I am,” she touched her chest, “is centered on being in the outdoors.”

“The duration will be seven to fourteen days, no longer.” Her head swung down, causing shadows to swallow her eyes. Two black hollows focused on Alainn. “When Mr. Garbhan pays Father, he and I will make the Rosette model; this process should only take a week, unless there are complications. And then I will devise a way to switch you with the new model.”

Blurb Blitz: Driven By Passion's Destiny by Bobbi Cole Meyer

Driven By Passion's Destiny
by Bobbi Cole Meyer

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: erotic/contemporary romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Lee Harris’s life of championship wrestling, gorgeous women and trekking all over the world to manage his chain of gourmet restaurants is over. A spinal injury puts him in a wheelchair. Despite a will of steel that has seen him through numerous injuries, there is no getting up and walking away from this one. Confused, bitter and angry, Lee resists all efforts of rehabilitation to help him adjust to his new life. Frustration is added to the mix when he meets Cassie, the first woman he wants since his accident. Wants and can’t have.

Cassie Sheppard has never gotten over her crush for the green-eyed, charismatic wrestler, Lee Harris. Now fate puts him within her reach. She is assigned to be his live-in physiotherapist. Despite his coldness toward her she finds herself falling for him more each day. She is determined to break through his stubbornness to help him regain his mobility, sexuality and self-esteem. Even if it costs her a broken heart.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
The wrestling crowd exploded in a deafening, reverberating chant, “Wild Man Harris” as Raymond Lee Harris sauntered toward the ring.
His red, white, and blue cape swung backwards, caught in the draft of wind generated by two huge, rafter-mounted fans, turned on per his instruction. He stood with a slight smile, eying the crowd from lowered lids, his green eyes made more noticeable by the dark eyeliner he’d applied. It was all part of his signature presentation, hyping his motto of “Wild Man Harris, always ready to fly into action.”
His skin-tight purple trunks hugged his six-foot-four frame, leaving little to the imagination, emphasizing the obvious—Lee “Wild Man” Harris was definitely well endowed.
He lifted a hand in a wave. The gesture exposed the perfection of his muscled upper torso, his broad chest, ripped abs, and perfectly tapered body. He flashed his famous, white-toothed smile to the ladies in the front row, pausing briefly to tease them by flexing his pectorals before blowing them a kiss.
One, a pretty, blonde girl he guessed to be in her late teens, struggled to unhook and wiggle out of her bra. She surprised him by tossing it to him as he drew near her. Laughing, he caught it mid-air, kissed it, and gave her a sexy wink before tossing it back to her.
This kind of over-the-top accolade still astonished him. Ever since he’d won the championship title the year before, it had been this way. Drinking in the adulation, he wondered what his rabid fans would say if they knew this on-stage persona, which he’d worked hard to perpetuate over the years, was contrary to his true personality.
He was actually shy in his everyday world. He preferred reading a good book and cooking a gourmet meal to enjoy at home with his family—his three best friends, or “co-husbands” as he liked to refer to them, and the one lady they all loved and shared in their polyandry nirvana, Kayla.
Yet here, in the midst of this adoring crowd of strangers, his shyness disappeared. He preened as was expected of him, donning that unrestrained personality as easily as he had his cape, to give his fans the show they anticipated. The show he knew they had paid to see. And tonight, he wanted the show to be the best ever, because after this performance, he was retiring from the ring.
He executed his usual agile and flamboyant flip over the ropes to enter the ring. He smoothed his long, chestnut-colored hair back from his face, unhooked his cape, and tossed it to his designated corner before bowing low to the audience.
With his second glance at the upturned faces, he frowned as he spotted Kayla and her other “husbands”—Harm, Luke, and J.J. He wasn’t surprised to see Luke and Harm because he knew they enjoyed wrestling, but Kayla and J.J.? This didn’t make sense. He knew that J.J., the youngest to have been invited into Kayla’s home as part of their alternate lifestyle, preferred ice hockey or boxing or any other sport to wrestling. And Kayla had said more than once she considered wrestling to be barbaric.
Something was wrong—very wrong! He knew it as the bell rang. He stood confused, not moving as the bell rang again.
This time, the ringing was followed by a jarring rendition of his adopted theme song, Hail to the Chief. Everything began to waver as that pulsating, persistent ringing morphed into a sharp pain.
Shaking his head, he glanced down at his friends again, only to discover they had all vanished. Even the crowd was gone. Nothing was left but that damnable ringing and the pain that throbbed behind his eyes.
Lee awoke from the dream with a start, his heart rate accelerating with anxiety. Struggling back to the present, reality hit him with brutal force.
His glory days in the wrestling ring were far behind him. As was his life with Kayla, the woman he had loved. And he no longer was even in contact with the men who had once been not only his co-husbands with Kayla, but his best friends.
The final kicker, the hardest blow of all in this stark, awake reality was that he was now living in the aftermath of a plane crash he had miraculously survived. But that survival had carried a high price.
He was paralyzed.
"FIVE STARS for one of the most peculiar high school experiences of all time!"  - The World is Hers for the Reading
New York Times bestselling author, Victoria Danann dishes up a stunning new teen/young adult series like nothing else.
Jean Marre's recent life has been one big surprise right after another. First his family moved to SoCal from a remote French Canadian town. Then he began feeling a strange compulsion to watch over a smart little blonde named Ever Moore. In fact he found himself restless, distracted, and uncomfortable if she wasn't around.
Before there was time to adjust to any of that, he was informed that his parents were going to South Africa for a few months and leaving him with his mother's friend, who happened to be Ever's mother.
Life just couldn't get stranger.
Or could it?
Find out why readers are calling #rcainehs funny, fast paced, and fabulous with flair.
If you haven't already read the introduction, The Game Begins, get it on Amazon and start reading today.
Excerpt:
Jean Marre
folded himself into the front passenger seat of Ever’s car to ride to school.
For the entire fifteen minutes it took to get there, neither said one word to
the other. That did not, however, mean that they didn’t dork with each other
all the way there.
 Jean Marre’s opening shot was to change her
satellite radio to a different channel. Hair Band Nation. She gaped at him for
a full four seconds when her eyes should have been on the road before punching
the number one button to return to Sounds of the SuperNow. He stared at her
blankly for a matching four seconds then, without taking his gaze away from her
or changing expression, reached over and pushed the button to return to “last
played”. Hair Band Nation.
After three more
volleys, Ever turned the radio off with a snarl. When Jean Marre started to
reach for it, she gave him a look that froze his had midair. He withdrew the
offending appendage, but the challenge Ever offered with her look brought a
gleam of amusement to his eyes.
He did not touch
the radio again.
Instead he
rolled down his window which, of course, threatened to make a beachy wreck of
her hair. She rolled it back up. He rolled it down. She rolled it back up and,
with a sneer of victory, pushed the child lock into place before he could do it
again. His bark of laughter surprised her and, if she was being perfectly
honest, pleased her.
She was not
being perfectly honest. He had a nice laugh, but she was not ready to give him
any concession.
She pulled into
her assigned parking space, which was located in the remotest region of
Mongolia because she was a sophomore, got out, and started walking without
looking back. It was a hike, but at least she could bring a car, unlike
freshmen.
Halfway there
she looked over her shoulder. Jean Marre was about twenty feet behind her.
“Don’t worry about me.” He grinned. “I like the view from here.”
Understanding
the implication, Ever sped up, which made Jean Marre laugh loud enough for her
to hear. The boy seemed to revel in being exasperating. That realization caused
Ever to think she needed to reform her approach to Jean Marre. Perhaps she
needed to think in terms of opposite world, since everything she did rendered
the reverse of a desired effect.
She stopped, got
control of her breathing, waited for him to catch up and fell in at the same
pace. She would never admit that they were walking together. Only that they
were moving toward the same place at the same time at the same speed. Together.
When he said,
“Excellent choice,” she knew she’d been manipulated. By a boy who didn’t even
want to go to college. It was vexing, to say the least.
Book Blast for Daughter of Aithne by Karin Rita Gastreich
Daughter of Aithne
(Book 3 of the Silver Web)
by Karin Rita Gastreich
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Fantasy

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Betrayed by her own prodigy, Eolyn stands accused of treason. As power-hungry nobles dismantle her life's work and honor, the desperate queen forges a risky alliance with the ruthless and cunning Mage Corey. Determined to defend her son's claim to the throne of the Mage King, Eolyn prepares for her last and greatest battle, this time against her own sisters in magic.
Across the Furma River, Taesara of Roenfyn is drawn out of seclusion and into an ever-more vicious game of intrigue and war. Subject to the schemes of a shrewd uncle and the mysterious ambitions of the wizards of Galia, Taesara struggles to assert her own destiny, even as she takes up arms to defend her daughter's inheritance.
In the climactic finale to The Silver Web trilogy, threads of love, honor, betrayal, and vengeance culminate in a violent conflict between powerful women, opposed to each other yet destined to shatter a thousand-year cycle of war.
"A tale of female oppression, prejudice, and even deadly seduction, EOLYN touches on issues that are deeply relevant to our own society." -Apex Reviews review of EOLYN, Book One of the Silver Web
The story's greatest triumph is Gastreich's prose, a consistent blend of lyrical verse and dark imageray....Lush, evocative descriptions carry readers through an unforgettable journey.” –Kirkus Reviews review of SWORD OF SHADOWS, Book Two of The Silver Web”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:

Speak plainly, my Lord King,” Eolyn said. “I will not be subject to this cat-and-mouse game. If you do not trust me, if you do not believe me, then say so.”

I trust your heart, Eolyn,” Akmael replied, “but your heart has led you to ill-advised decisions in the past. For this reason, I am not always inclined to trust your judgment.”

For the love of the Gods! I am not the confused and frightened girl I was when my brother took up arms against you.”

No, but you must understand the dilemma you have put me in.”

The dilemma I have put you in?”

If you knew of Ghemena’s plan and did not inform me, you were party to treason. If you did not know, then your authority over the magas is uncertain. Either way, the magas must remain bound and imprisoned until this conflict is resolved.”

Eolyn blinked and stepped away. “The magas have lived in peace in Moisehén for more than a decade. You cannot let the action of one woman—”

Three women. The blatantly treasonous act of three women, all devoted students of yours. They have brought war upon us, Eolyn. Who knows how many others among your followers support them?”

The magas who remain in my service have done nothing to merit suspicion.”

All magas merit suspicion.” Akmael hesitated at her stricken look. He let go a slow breath and softened his tone. “There is a history here that we have not yet overcome, Eolyn. You, of all people, must understand that. Too many of our subjects still remember the war against my father.”

And the purges that followed?” she shot back.

The violence that tore this kingdom apart,” he conceded. “Right or wrong, the magas were left with the blame. We must manage this situation carefully, to protect you and your daughters. To see that justice is done.”

Cake: A Love Story by J. Bengtsson blitz

Cake: A Love Story
J. Bengtsson
(Cake #1)
Publication date: May 14th 2016
Genres: New Adult, Romance

Jake McKallister might have been a rock star, but he was no ordinary one. Surviving an unspeakable crime as a young teen had shaped him into a guarded workaholic, and he now lived his life trying to forget. If it hadn’t been for music and the redemption he found through it, he might not have survived. Career success came easily for him. Personal connections did not.

When outspoken, vivacious college student Casey Caldwell was paired with the famously reserved rockstar for a friend’s wedding, she was prepared for the worst. What could they possibly have in common? She was a bubbly talker; he was a reclusive loner. His life was filled with music; she couldn’t carry a tune. She’d enjoyed a happy childhood; his was a well-publicized nightmare.

Yet despite their obvious differences, Jake and Casey found each other, and her light balanced out his darkness. Would their love be strong enough to survive the weight of his tragic past?

AUTHOR’S NOTE: This is a *full-length* standalone romance. Cake is a love story at heart but does deal with a sensitive topic and may not be for all.

Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of eighteen.

*This novel was professionally re-edited on June 28th, 2016*

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:

-Banter-

I gave an apologetic look. “I know. Sorry. You intimidate me. I mean, it would take no effort on your part to get with pretty much any girl at this wedding.”

Jake didn’t refute my claim – probably because he knew it was true. In fact, he was actually giving what I said quite a bit of thought. What was I getting myself into?

Finally, he sighed, and said, “Sometimes having sex just isn’t worth the consequences.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means that with sex comes expectations.”

I waited for him to explain his comment, and when he didn’t I said, “And?”

Jake exhaled dramatically, as if he were expected to explain himself to a child. “If I’m going to have meaningless sex with someone, I need a quick exit strategy; otherwise she’s going to want to follow me around – or worse, talk. In a setting like this, there’s no way to disappear after getting it on, so sex wouldn’t be worth the consequences… get it?”

“Wow, you’ve really given this a lot of thought.”

He nodded in agreement. “I’ve learned from experience.”

“I’m sure you have. So, then, I guess it’s a good thing we aren’t going to have meaningless sex tonight.” I laughed. “Because I would definitely be following you around trying to talk to you.”

“I know. You’d be the worst.”
