Breaking Rules

He’s a hunky quarterback. She’s a talented artist. He’s sworn off girls. She’s fighting to protect her honor.

Brooding, high school quarterback, Train Everly, was on the fast track to play football at the University of South Carolina until one misstep at a party put his chances in jeopardy. Now in his senior year, he’s sworn off dates, no steady relationships and definitely no sex. The last girl he’d fallen for tore out his heart and stomped on it with stiletto heels. But a new school year brings new students and one girl in particular, Montana Smith. He can’t seem to shake the blonde, curvy, and feisty girl who blows into computer class like a category five hurricane, causing his pulse to race for the end zone. Still, beauty, boobs, and curves are a recipe for disaster. He can’t afford to hook up with her. Not if he wants to protect his heart, and his spot on the USC football team.

Graffiti artist and rebellious eighteen-year-old, Montana Smith has been expelled from high school more times her mother cares to count. So when Montana gets expelled for defacing school property, Montana’s mom decides it’s time to get out of the big city and find a southern sleepy town where Montana surely can’t get into too much trouble. But the small town is ripe with temptation more than Montana or her mom even realize, especially when Montana meets the star quarterback, Train Everly. She’s drawn to his sea-green eyes, and his quiet personality. What she isn’t ready for is his moodiness that seeps under her skin so much so that she decides to make a fool of herself. But she’ll take the stares and whispers over her pathetic performance rather than tango with Train’s ex-girlfriend who will do anything to get Montana out of the picture.

As a relationship between Train and Montana ebbs and flows, both will be tempted to do things that could lead to trouble and broken hearts.

Intended for audiences 18+ Strong language and sexual content

HOW TO MAKE A WISH Blog Tour

How to Make a Wish

by Ashley Herring Blake

Publisher: HMH Books for Young Readers

Release Date: May 2nd 2017
Genre: Young Adult, GLBT, Contemporary

Synopsis:

All seventeen year-old Grace Glasser wants is her own life. A normal life in which she sleeps in the same bed for longer than three months and doesn't have to scrounge for spare change to make sure the electric bill is paid. Emotionally trapped by her unreliable mother, Maggie, and the tiny cape on which she lives, she focuses on her best friend, her upcoming audition for a top music school in New York, and surviving Maggie’s latest boyfriend—who happens to be Grace’s own ex-boyfriend’s father.

Her attempts to lay low until she graduates are disrupted when she meets Eva, a girl with her own share of ghosts she’s trying to outrun. Grief-stricken and lonely, Eva pulls Grace into midnight adventures and feelings Grace never planned on. When Eva tells Grace she likes girls, both of their worlds open up. But, united by loss, Eva also shares a connection with Maggie. As Grace's mother spirals downward, both girls must figure out how to love and how to move on.

Interview

1. What is your favorite part of this book and why? I loved writing the romance between Grace and Eva. It was just so fun and refreshing and, well, needed in YA. I also loved exploring Grace and her mom’s complicated relationship. It wasn’t always easy, but it was rewarding.

2. If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day? I’d want to hang out with Grace and Luca on a boat. I just loved writing their friendship and they are definitely two people I’d love to hang out with. There is a scene on a boat in the book, and while Grace and Luca don’t talk a ton during that scene, I can imagine past summers spent on the boat and how much fun they had.

3. If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose? Jandy Nelson’s The Sky in Everywhere or Nina LaCour’s We Are Okay. Both are just breathtaking books about grief, the kind I really dream about writing but just don’t think I’m able to do at this point in my life.

4. Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination? They are all from my imagination. However, the opening scene in which Grace returns home from a two week-long piano workshop to find her mom, Maggie, has moved them in with Maggie’s new boyfriend, was inspired, loosely, by a friend of mine’s experience.

5. What made you want to become a writer? I love stories, plain and simple, and I believe in their power to change us, to comfort us, or possibly, to hurt us. I wanted to write for kids and teens and be a force of good in their lives, a place they could run to find themselves.

My Review: 4*
This was actually my first F/F YA book. It is not something I have seen a lot of. I did enjoy how Ashley Herring Blake wrote the book as what I call gently. it was a sweet love story combined with a terrible relationship with Grace's Mother, which was heartbreaking.

The book flowed along very nicely. I like the sweetness of new love whether it is M/F, F/F, or M/M. I really liked how the love blossomed slowly instead of full blown all at once. I liked the friendship as well. It was really great that Grace had a has a support system with her friends since her mother is horrible.

You also get some controversial things in the book. I personally have no problems with them but some people may. Grace is bisexual and the romance is biracial. Parts of this book actually would be very good for a teenage girl struggling wit her sexuality. Even heterosexual's could learn more and understand better how their bisexual and gay friends feel and think.

Ashley Herring Blake is a reader, writer, and mom to two boisterous boys. She holds a Master’s degree in teaching and loves coffee, arranging her books by color, and watching Buffy over and over again on Netflix with her friends. She's the author of the young adult novels SUFFER LOVE and HOW TO MAKE A WISH.

Lydia SherrerAbout the Author:

Author of the Love, Lies, and Hocus Pocus magical adventure series, Lydia Sherrer is a fantasy author whose goal is to leave this world a better place than when she found it. With an urban fantasy series, multiple short stories and a novella under her belt, Lydia has been writing for over a decade and enjoys nothing more than a good book, a cup of tea, and a comfy chair in the sunshine. When not writing she loves to play her ocarina (think Zelda), and also enjoys traditional archery, cosplay, larping, and art.

Growing up in rural Kentucky, she was thoroughly corrupted by a deep love for its rolling countryside, despite the mosquitoes and hay fever. She was instilled with a craving for literature early on, and her parents had to wrestle books away from her at the dinner table. Though she graduated with a dual BA in Chinese and Arabic, having traveled the world she came home and decided to stay there. She currently resides in Louisville, KY with her loving and supportive husband, and their very vocal cat.

Excerpt:

“Forgive me,” he
says. “But when I say the word, you really should scream.”
That’s all the
warning I need. If Adom wants me to scream, he wants the others to think he’s
hurting me. He wants to send fear shuddering down their monstrous, twisted
spines, to dry their mouths and shrivel the pits of their cavernous stomachs.
He wants to show them that he is the king, the master of this mountain, the
master of me.
Adom averts his
gaze. “Scream.”
In the seconds
it takes him to morph from human to dragon, his chest expanding, scales popping
out of his skin like boils, I’m already at the door. I scream, just as he asks
me to.

The full blast
of flame doesn’t hit me, but it’s enough heat to sting my lower back. Good
thing I tied my hair this morning—he misses singeing it off by a few inches.
The monstrous roar he releases bursts a decanter on the table. The mirror
cracks. But the fire inside me has nothing to do with Adom’s monster, and
everything to do with my own. Only mine burns for revenge.

About the Author

Melody Steiner is a novelist, librarian, warrior woman, and a mother. She grew up in a home where science fiction and fantasy were staples of the imagination. Her earliest novels were written in elementary school and involved rocket ships to the moon, alien life, and gumdrop kingdoms at war with other invading candy nations. Over the years, she found herself drawn to fantasy stories that empower female characters and particularly women of color. Currently, she’s based near Columbus, Ohio, along with her husband and the wild things they call “children.”

Her recent work, Slither, is a traditional fantasy about a young woman who is enslaved by a herd of dragons.
