VBT: The Flip by Michael Phillip Cash

The Flip
by Michael Phillip Cash

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Ghost/Haunted House/Horror
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Julie and Brad Evans are house flippers. They buy low, clean out the old occupants junk, and try to make a profit. Enter Hemmings House on Bedlam Street in scenic Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island. Too good a deal to pass up, but with an ominous secret. The old Victorian Mansion has dwellers that do not want to be dispossessed. As the house reveals its past, will the couple's marriage survive The Flip?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
Julie started demolition on a bathroom in one of the many bedrooms. She needed to lose herself in some work. She was losing her mind. Images of last night with her husband played like a movie in her head. The bodies were familiar, yet at the same time, they were not. The whole episode had a dreamlike quality, and for now, Julie wasn’t sure what part of what they had done was real or from her imagination. It was better to keep busy, think about things to keep her occupied, so her head wouldn’t explode.
She trudged upstairs and started working in the first of the guest bedrooms. It was an en suite, perfect for a bed-and breakfast. Why couldn’t Brad see that? she wondered. She lifted out the toilet, carefully pulled a rusty medicine cabinet from the wall, and started chopping at tiles on the floor, both of her tiny hands whacking away with a giant mallet. They had decided that nothing was salvageable in this bath. She dragged the fixtures out of the small bathroom to a cleared corner in the bedroom. It was hot. Sweat trickled down her back. She was wearing an oversized T-shirt and yoga pants from Target. She fanned herself, smiling when she thought of the pretty ladies’ fan in her makeshift bedroom. Julie went to the window. The trees surrounding the house were painted amber, red, and yellow. A breeze ruffled the branches, and Julie wanted to air out the stuffy room.
My Review: 5*
I have been dying to get to read this book. I love ghost stories, I love haunted houses, I also love history. This book had it all for me.
Julie and Brad a married couple find houses fix them up and flip them. After their latest house closing Brad decides to take the scenic route home. Julie spots a For Sale sign for a dilapidated old Mansion and immediately is drawn to it. Against Brads judgement they buy it.
Brad is the brawn in their flipping. He does most of the remodeling himself. Strange things and feelings start almost immediately when he begins work on the house.  His attitude changes and he is very short and cross with Julie whenever he is at the house.
Brad wants nothing more then to finish the house and sell it as soon as possible. Julie on the other hand wants to keep the house and tun it into a B&B. After their house mysteriously burns down they move into the mansion and things really get strange. And dangerous.
This was a short book and at times the timeline felt a bit rushed, but it was still a great story. It bounced between the present and Gerald and Tessa (the ghosts) past, filling you in on the history part of the story.  Michael Cash also added in that the house was a stop on the Underground Railroad. Which one really did exist in that town but not at this made up house.  The town is real, some of the people are real, and the Underground railroad was real. I really enjoyed everything about this book. It is not really scar the are some creepy parts to it though.
I was given this book by the Author for reviewing purposes. The thoughts in this review are my own and not because the Author wanted me to say so.
Mason Dixon – Monster Hunter by Eric R. Asher blitz
Mason Dixon – Monster Hunter Episode 1
Eric R. Asher
Publication date: April 21st 2017
Genres: Adult, Urban Fantasy
They are the first line of defense against the things that go bump in the night.
They are the keepers of a centuries-old legacy of The Church defending the world against the forces of darkness.
They are a bunch of highly armed rednecks, internet video celebrities, soccer moms, and assorted broken nutjobs.
They are the new Templars, and things are about to get weird.
From the pages of Bubba the Monster Hunter comes a new series featuring the Hunters from around the United States hunting down monsters, fighting off supernatural baddies, and making life really, really bad for the things that hunt people.
He’s Mason Dixon, and he’s a bona fide internet celebrity. He has his own video series, a pistol that deserves its own area code, and a high definition video camera, and he’s not afraid to use any of them.
In this introductory urban fantasy novella, we meet Mason, his right hand Emma, his “handler” Noah, his anime-styled hacker friend Himari, and more monsters than you can shake a stick at. Unless it’s a really big stick.
With Mason, it’s always a big stick. This first novella in the series follows Mason through the wilds of Missouri as he hunts down monsters that hunt men, monsters that eat chewing tobacco, and monsters that make pancakes. And there’s moonshine.
And then Bubba the Monster Hunter shows up.
The New Templars novella series is a new series of short novels, similar to BookShots. Mason Dixon – Monster Hunter is the first in the series by popular urban fantasy and steampunk author Eric R. Asher.
EXCERPT:
“Out,” I said. “Get out of the pit. Safeties off.” I raised the stock to my shoulder and swept the area around us again.
Emma slipped and crashed into the pit, sending a cascade of stained white bones over the edge to clatter down into the limestone depression. We waited, and I could hear my own heartbeat pounding in my ears.
Boom.
We both froze. I don’t care how many times you’ve encountered something in the wild, you still freeze for a split second.
Boom.
“Move!” I hissed, backpedaling while keeping my tranquilizer aimed around Emma. She was almost out. We could get back on the ATVs and come back with bigger guns. 10cc darts? I should have brought the 50cc cannon. This was a mistake. The old man wasn’t crazy at all.
Boom. Boom. Boom. BoomBoomBoom.
The gowrow erupted from its lair like it had been spit forth by an angry god. Its stubby, bulbous body might have been humorous paired with its long scaly neck if not for the tusks fit for a mammoth gleaming in the dying sun. It would take that creature zero effort to kill us in one charge.
Its movements seemed awkward, but its attacks were practiced. The gowrow swiped at Emma with a four-toed webbed foot, a lethal claw extending from each digit. She fell backwards and rolled away, barely avoiding the attack.
Any doubt this gowrow was a maneater fled in a heartbeat.
I cranked the air pressure as high as it would go on the tranquilizer gun and fired. The dart rose slightly in a wind disturbance created by the massive creature and pinged harmlessly off the field of spiky scales lining its back. I cursed, flipped the butt of the rifle open, and loaded another dart.
NBTM: On Seas So Crimson by James Young
On Seas So Crimson
by James Young
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Alternate History

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Adolf Hitler is dead.  Great Britain has fallen.  The Royal Family has fled to Canada, and the United States stands alone against the Axis.
On Seas So Crimson collects both novels of the Usurper's War into a single package.  Acts of War (Amazon Bestseller in alternate history) begins this universe with London on fire, while Collisions of the Damned (recommended by Alternate History Weekly) continues it with the desperate defense of the Dutch East Indies.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt One:

It’s never a good day when you become commander of a vessel simply because no one else was left.  From what he understood, Keir had started the day as chief of Hood’s Navigation Division.  That had been before the vessel took at least three 15-inch shells to the bridge area, as well as two more that had wiped out her gunnery directory and the secondary bridge.

Captain Gordon was right—she was a very powerful warship.  Unfortunately that tends to make you a target.

“Commander, you are certain that…” Gordon started, then collected himself.  “You are certain His Majesty is dead.”

“Yes sir,” Keir said.  “His Majesty was in the conning tower with Admiral Pound when it was hit.  The Royal Surgeon positively identified His Majesty’s body in the aid station before that was hit in turn.  We cannot get to the aid station due to the spreading fire.”

“Understood.  His Majesty would not have wanted any of you to risk his life for his body,” Gordon said.

“I just…” Keir started, then stopped, overcome with emotion.

“It is not your fault lad,” Gordon said.  “Her Majesty will understand.”

Gordon turned and looked at the Exeter’s clock.

“Very well, we are out of time.  Stand by to fire torpedoes.”

“Torpedoes report they are ready.”

“Sir, you may want to tell your torpedo officer to have his weapons set to run deep,” Keir said.  “She’s drawing…”

There was a large explosion aboard Hood as the flames reached a secondary turret’s ready ammunition.  Eric saw a fiery object arc slowly across, descending towards the Exeter as hundreds of helpless eyes watched it.  The flaming debris’ lazy parabola terminated barely fifty yards off of Exeter’s side with a large, audible splash.

“I think we do not have time for that discussion,” Gordon said grimly.  “Fire torpedoes!”

The three weapons from Exeter’s starboard tubes sprang from their launchers into the water.  Set as a narrow spread, the three tracks seemed to take forever to impact from Eric’s perspective.  Exeter’s torpedo officer, observing Hood’s state, had taken into account the battlecruiser’s lower draught without having to be told.  Indeed, he had almost set the weapons for too deep a run, but was saved by the flooding that had occurred in the previous few minutes.  In addition to breaking the battlecruiser’s keel, the triple blow opened the entire aft third of her port side to the ocean.  With the audible sound of twisting metal, Hood started to roll onto her beam ends.  She never completed the evolution before slipping beneath the waves.

Interview with James Young
Where do you get inspiration for your stories?
On Seas So Crimson is a collection of my two Usurper’s War novels to date.  I’ve thought of an alternate World War II from when I was a grade school kid and found out about the Anglo-Japanese Alliance in the early 20th Century.  “Hey, Spitfires versus Hellcats would be kind of cool.”—me at ten.

In general, things just come to me, or I’ll see something in history and think, “Hmm, that’s a hinge of Fate.”  I was blessed with a vivid imagination and parents who didn’t suppress it (as I know it had to be annoying more than once or twice).

How did you do research for your book?
This one comes up a lot at cons when I sell books in person.  I’m a lifelong history nerd, and I’m currently getting my doctorate in U.S. History after majoring in Military History at West Point.  So you could say I’ve done research just by reading for pleasure most of my life, with specific research thrown in over the last decade and a half on weapons technology.

If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?
I would have to stipulate that this would have to be without knowledge that I’m the jerk responsible for all the horrible things that happened to them in the last however many pages.  But I’d spend a day with one of the Cobb brothers, in the late 1970s, conducting an oral history interview of all that’s gone before.  One, I’ve always liked talking to older veterans about their service.  Two, it’d be nice to have some outline notes of what the heck happens in the next series after this.

Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?
If this were a police interview, I’m pretty sure that this would be the point my attorney would be telling me to be quiet.  Suffice to say, people who have passed through my life are represented in the book in various ways.  Some of them have good days.  Some of them get immolated on the bridge of a flagship.  In other series, I learned that it’s a bad idea to “Tuckerize” people too closely, as then they complain a great deal should their character meet a grisly end.

What is your next project?

My next big project is wrapping up my dissertation.  Closely behind that is Though Our Hulls Burn…, which is set in my Vergassy Chronicles universe.  Both are getting worked on concurrently, with the occasional detour to knock out an essay or short story for passing anthologies.

Excerpt One:

Foolish Bride

Her heart beat wildly. “But is that not why you pursued me?”

He kissed the tip of her nose. “I will not deny I came to London this season because I needed to marry to restore the money that my father squandered.” He kissed her cheek. “I had every intention of finding a rich bride to enable that plan.” He kissed her other cheek. “Then I met you, and you were the perfect solution to my problems.”

She tried to pull away,  but he held her close and kissed her lips. It was only a peck, but the thrill of it traveled to her toes and hit everywhere in between.

His body filled all her curves as he hugged her and spread kisses along her cheek and neck. “I knew you were the one, Elinor. So beautiful, charming, and sweet, I could not resist you. I want to be worthy of your love, and in the weeks we courted, I found a way to get enough money to repair my country home and still have enough to make a good start of the marriage. I made the deal on some grain. It will take a bit of time for my plans to pan out, but in a couple of months, I should be able to show your father that I am worthy of you.”
