When Sammy Shovel sinks his teeth into a case—he gets to the bottom of it— no matter how many bullets are flying at him.

Private Investigator, Sammy Shovel, is short, slightly overweight, balding, and he dresses like San Francisco’s most squalid street people.

When a supposed heist falls into his lap, Sammy jumps at the chance to make a few bucks, from an unknown victim, by stopping what appears to be a simple robbery. However, the case turns out to be different than anything he’s taken on since the death of his partner.

Sammy finds himself speeding through streets of San Francisco to head off another senseless murder. The events that follow are beyond his comprehension, and will change his perception of crime forever.

The victim may not be as evil as it seems, but rather—a casualty of circumstances.

About the Author

Ronald M. James was born during the great depression, and as a toddler watched WPA men build a new street, from his home’s big front window. His playmates were a red rider wagon, a small black satchel and rocks. By using his imagination he had conversations with mythical street workers that bloomed into fashioned fantasies by age four. He used cardboard boxes to create fun spaces for his neighborhood playmates to enjoy and he kept telling stories all through high school. In college he abandoned writing and studied architecture. James had a successful architectural career and retired, however he wanted to keep his creative juices fluent, so he returned to his childhood story telling days and joined a writers group. Like architecture, each day he couldn’t wait to create, finish, and start new stories—like this one, An Adventurous Night.

Except 2:
‘…Outside, she moved stealthily through the camp to the general’s barracks. The main door was unlocked. She went directly to Kentril’s office. As she had expected, it was dark and no one was there. However, just as she was about to call his name, she heard voices from the conference room at the end of the hall.
The door of the conference room was ajar and Lluava peeked inside. General Kentril and Major Ojewa sat on the far side of a large, rectangular table. Lluava recognized other officers; the frazzled nurse was there, too, as well as others whom she did not know. One man, of average build, his head completely shaved, faced away from her. When he turned, she saw a small nose in a large face, and a scar that began at his left ear and traveled downward, disappearing into his shirt collar.
Deeply involved with the conversation, the man suddenly broke in. “Explain your reasoning!” he demanded. As he spoke, Lluava blinked several times to make sure what she saw was real. All his teeth were pointed, as if he had filed them. The sight of the sharp, serrated peaks grinding on each other gave her an unsettled feeling.
“That is preposterous!” trumpeted an enormous man who sat to the left of Razor-Tooth. The huge person’s loud, booming voice echoed off the walls. More astonishingly, his voice barely began to convey the massive size of the man. Even seated, Lluava could tell he was close to seven feet tall, if not taller. His wide shoulders framed an overdeveloped, muscular body barely contained by his shirt. He had to wedge himself between the arms of the chair.
The mammoth man bellowed, “How can you think of such a thing? We have no reason to believe that! It was just a horrible accident!
Major Ojewa’s response was cool. “When we examined the bridge, we found that the ropes had been severed three-fourths of the way through. The cuts were clean, which indicates that they were caused not by natural wear but by some sharp object, like a knife or a sword.”
“What of the girl? You said that she was extremely quick to react. Could she have had something to do with the collapse? It could explain how she seemed to hold back and then move so quickly afterward.”
General Kentril spoke up at this remark. “Lluava is one of the best recruits we have. She is ambitious and curious to a fault, but I will defend her with all that I am. She had nothing to do with that incident. I called you here to discuss the possibility that the bridge was tampered with by a force outside this facility.”
“What are you insinuating, Kentril?” the burly giant gruffly asked.
“Raiders.” A powerful voice spoke from the other side of the door…’

Interview with Katharine E Wibell
1. What is your favorite part of this book and why?
I am going to try not to spoil anything for your readers as I answer your questions. When considering my favorite part of Issaura’s Claws, I keep returning to a particular action sequence. In addition to being a writer, I am also an artist and painter. I am very much a visual person and am drawn to images in art, film and literature that are vivid. In this book, there is a scene where my heroine, Lluava, is combating a traitor. I can picture Lluava’s platinum blonde hair whipping around as she struggles to keep away from the enemy’s weapon, the leaves of the forest’s understory scattering about during the chaos, the brilliant red of blood dripping down. I love when scenes come alive and seem to tumble haphazardly off the page to take place in front of the reader’s eyes.

2. If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?
First, I would have to decide between two characters. Lluava is the most obvious choice initially. Since she is my main character, I have a great attachment to her. On the other hand, as there is a good bit of myself in her, it might be like hanging out with a variant of my reflection. If I spent a day with her, I think I would have the most enjoyable time hanging out on the dock of her hometown of Rivendale. Spending a quiet afternoon just getting to know this young woman and her family on a more intimate level would be a wonderful experience. The other person would be Varren. He is highly knowledgeable regarding the kingdom of Elysia. Weather permitting, I feel that touring the kingdom on horseback with him would be a lot of fun!

3. If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?
I have a passion for ancient epic poetry. My copies of the Ramayana and Beowulf have been reread so many times that they are dog-eared. I think if I had to select one book, I would like to have “written” the Odyssey. I know the actual epic was not inscribed on paper until hundreds of years after its creation, but I have always found the story fascinating. It is filled with action, adventure, monsters and supernatural beings. Although a narrative of pure survival against the will of an angered goddess, the Odyssey is not necessarily a happy story. I respect the wit and intelligence of Odysseus as well as his endurance and commitment to continue against all odds to return to his home and family. I want to create a world as complex, harsh, and unique as Homer’s story.

4. Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?
My characters are almost entirely spawned from my imagination. Even though Lluava has a great connection to myself, she is not based off of me. At least I hope I am not as hot-tempered and rash as she is. Yet, I will have to admit, there are moments when each of my characters acts or thinks like a person I have known at a specific point in time. So in the end, the answer is a bit muddled. My characters are not actual acquaintances or myself, yet they are often a composite of experiences from my own past.

5. What made you want to become a writer?
Writing or, at the very least, storytelling is engrained in my DNA. I have always created characters with back-stories both good, bad, and the in-between. As a child, all my toys had names, personalities, and complex relationships with one another. Although I played less with those toys as I got older, I still needed to express my unhindered imagination. Fantasy writing was a natural next move. Thus Issaura’s Claws and the Incarn Saga were born.

Halayda by Sarah Delena

About the Book
Title: Halayda
Author: Sarah Delena
Genre: Dark Fantasy / Steampunk
A mortal alchemist. A faerie king. A bond that transcends death.

Betrayed by a trusted mentor, Sylvie Imanthiya hides on the fringes of society, caring for half-fae orphans and trading her alchemical creations on the black market. She lives for the one night each season when she can see her dearest friend—a man whose destiny is far above hers.

King Taylan Ashkalabek knows better than to exchange halayda vows with a mortal. Even their friendship is a risk; love is an impossible dream. Then a brutal alchemical attack poisons his realm, unearthing a dark power within him—and leaving Sylvie with the ancient mark of Faerie’s savior.

Manifesting unpredictable abilities and aided by allies with their own secrets, Sylvie and Taylan journey into the wilds of Faerie to heal the damage and confront Casimir, an invincible star-fae determined to claim the realm as his own. But only their enemy knows Sylvie’s true capabilities—and Taylan’s weaknesses—and how to use them in his vicious schemes.

Her fate is life. His fate is death. With Faerie in the balance, Sylvie and Taylan must stand together before reality as they know it is destroyed.

Excerpt:
Sylvie sighed. “Zad, what am I doing?”
“You’re packing a bag and going on an adventure.” Zad’s tone held concern, but his black eyes were bright. He folded his arms and leaned against the door frame.
“You say that like it’s a jaunt through the storm drains. I can’t go off on a wild quest just because Taylan thinks I’m some magical savior.”
“Why not? You seemed magical enough yesterday. Besides, ‘a jaunt through the storm drains’ is nothing to scoff at. I’ve seen you hold your own against some of the toughest dealers on the black market.”
“Thanks, Zad, but that’s different. I grew up here in the slums. I’ve never even set foot in Faerie. What if…” Sylvie swallowed. “What if I’m wrong, and I can’t actually help?”

“If you stay here, you definitely won’t help. What do you have to lose?”

Book Excerpts

From “Jodie’s Magic Balloon”

There was a stand with beautiful balloons of all colors and shapes. They were on long strings and floated high in the air.
Jodie grabbed her father’s hand and pulled him right to the stand. When the man selling the balloons saw her, he winked and said, “I have a special magic balloon just for you, Jodie.”
“How do you know my name?” she asked, surprised.
“I’m a magician,” he said. “And when I made this balloon, I saw it had instructions stating that it was only to be given to a little girl named Jodie.”
“But how did you know that was me?”
“Oh,” the magician said with a smile. “That was easy. The instructions also said I would recognize her because she has the tiniest nose you ever saw and the sweetest smile. As soon as I saw you, I know you were that person.”
The man gave Jodie a very large and beautiful balloon. It had every color of the rainbow and sparkled like gold in the sunlight.
“Oh,” said Jodie. “It”s beautiful. But why is this a magic balloon?”
The magician smiled again. “When you crawl inside this wonderful balloon, it will obey everything you ask it to do. Would you like to try it?”
“Oh, yes!” Jodie cried excitedly, and she crawled inside the balloon. “It’s very comfortable in here. Now what do I do?”
“Just tell the balloon to go anywhere you like,” answered the magician with another smile.

“Please take me high into the sky, even higher than the clouds” instructed Jodie.

My Review:
This book is no where near Mother Goose but I personally enjoyed it as much as the kids. The stories are original and fresh. Most come with a bit of a lesson as well. I personally like to read educational in some way stories to the kids. Life Lessons are a great way to teach the kids to be people you can be proud of .This book is great at gently teaching these lessons.

The stories feature animals as the characters and in most they are the main characters. Each of the stories are short and great for bedtime. Grandpa Bernie has done an amazing job with these stories. I would be more then proud to give a copy of this book to family and friends Children as gifts. My Grand Children ages 2 and 5 really enjoyed this book. There are 18 stories in the book. Great for bedtime as I said but also great for a few minutes of cuddle time.

Author Bio

I didn’t begin my career as an author by writing stories. First, I was a storyteller. Let me explain. Many years ago, when our children were very young, I would sit on their beds at bedtime and tell them a story. Instead of reading a story written by someone else, I preferred to make up my own story right on the spot. They were stories about animals who learned to fly, children who talked to birds, alligators who were friends with elephants, and even one about a horse that learned to jump like a kangaroo. Our children loved them. So I made up lot of stories. Then there was a long period of time when there was no one who wanted to listen to my stories because they had all grown up!
But then, something wonderful happened. We had our first grandchild—and I became Grandpa Bernie. One day, one of my daughters said, “Dad, you have so many stories. I think other children would like to hear them.” That’s when I became an author.
At the age of 93, I am still playing tennis (doubles only) five times a week in a 60+ league. I have been married 64 years to my wonderful wife, Faigie, had three children, and five grandchildren. I continue to sit in my favorite chair, with a large pad on my lap, and a pen in my hand, lean back, and let my imagination soar.
