Gallowglass Cover Reveal & Preorder

GALLOWGLASS

The first installment in a new series by fantasy author Jennifer Allis Provost!
After Karina and her brother, Chris’s, lives fall apart in separate yet equally spectacular ways, they leave New York behind and head to the UK. Karina buries herself in research for her doctoral thesis, all the while studiously not thinking about the man who broke her heart, while Chris—who’d been a best-selling author before his ex-fiancée sued him for plagiarism—drinks his way across the British Isles.
In Scotland, they visit the grave of Robert Kirk, a seventeenth- century minister who was kidnapped by fairies. No one is more shocked than Karina when a handsome man with a Scottish brogue appears, claiming to be the Robert Kirk of legend. What’s more, he says he spent the last few hundred years as the Gallowglass, the Seelie Queen’s personal assassin. When they’re attacked by demons, Karina understands how dearly the queen wants him back.
As Karina and Robert grow closer, Chris’s attempts to drown his sorrows lead him to a pub, and a woman called Sorcha. Chris is instantly smitten with her, so much so he spends days with Sorcha and lies to his sister about his whereabouts. When Chris comes home covered in fey kisses, Karina realizes that the Seelie Queen isn’t just after Robert.
Can Karina outsmart the Seelie Queen, or is Robert doomed to forever be the Gallowglass?

Book Tour "Spoonful Chronicles" by Elen Ghulam

About the Book
Title: Spoonful Chronicles
Author: Elen Ghulam
Genre: Women’s Fiction
Thaniya Rasid grew up in the Middle East dreaming of becoming a surgeon. Now living an ordinary life as a mother, wife and a hospital lab tech in Vancouver, Canada, she garners unexpected fame as youTube’s Queen of Hummus when her video demonstrating the recipe goes viral. How could blending chickpeas in a food processor generate so much excitement? And how could her life have ended up so far away from all her expectations?
To make sense of the unlikely events that have brought her to this place, Thaniya turns to food, curating memorable eating experiences of her life, searching for clues. Between her childhood aversion to cucumbers, her search for an authentic Iraqi kubeh in the city of Jerusalem, her 10-year tomato wars with her husband Samih, a mood altering encounter with a blood pudding in Edinburgh, and a Kafkaesque nightmare involving a cauliflower, Thaniya unravels repeated patterns occurring in her life. The secrets of love, friendship and destiny hidden in her cauldron of mishmashed cultures begin to reveal themselves.
Between lust and disgust there is a thin line. Spoonful Chronicles is the beguiling story of one woman taking hold of her fate by uncovering the clandestine geography of this divide in her heart.

Excerpt 1:

It came to me gradually. In spatters and smudges. Like a Jackson Pollock painting. Splash here. Drip there. Seems accidental. You stand back and look. The horror of the furtive activity attacks you. My name should be Sabbah. Nobody ever said this within my earshot. It was a little niggling suspicion.  A faint whisper in my head. It grew and multiplied. Now it is a scream. I know it in my toes. I feel it in the frazzled ends of my hair. I never dared ask directly. It is as obvious as the sun in the sky. I should be sitting here, declaring to you proudly that my name means morning in Arabic. A name that implies light, brightness, the first call to prayer of the day and the cock-a-doodle-doo of a proud rooster breaking dawn. Since my sister’s name means night in our language, I have surmised my parents worried about the negative connotation that would be assigned to her in relation to me.  Imagine my parents introducing us to their friends:
And here are our daughters: Night and Day.
They are as different as light and darkness.
People might have sniggered at the too matchy matchy extremes.
“Oh you called your daughters Night and Morning,” those with comedic aspirations would have continued. “If you have a third daughter you should call her Noon.”
Instead I have this nothing name. It reeks relativity without embodying substance. My name is Thaniya.

Author Bio

My name is Elen. I am an Iraqi-Canadian. Please allow me to tell you a story of a curios event that happened to me. I was a perfectly happy computer programmer doing the nerdy stuff that computer programmers do. You know! Geeky stuff. Like the normal stuff that an Iraqi-Canadian would do if they worked as a computer programmer. When one day, out of nowhere, the inspiration to write hit me over the head. It came at me fast and furious and turned my life topsy turvy. I was always an avid reader. Ok I was a bookish geek. But the idea that I would try to write never even occurred to me, until the violent incident with the muse. Since then I have published a memoir called “Don’t Shoot! … I Have Another Story to Tell You“. Which Was followed by a novel called Graffiti Hack. That one tells the story of a hacker who installs lavish graphical designs on commercial websites. Imagine the trouble she gets in? Well I had to. I was writing the story, so I had to imagine every last bit. A third novel is on it way. I don’t know where all these ideas come from, they just pop in my head and I write them down. In addition to writing, I am a flamenco dancer, I enjoy painting and I love to cook. Somehow all these activities inspire each other.

I am a married mother of three, living in a pink house in Vancouver BC
Really I just love telling stories and I love listening to stories.

EXCERPT:

She didn’t know why the angry asshole sitting next to her made her want to fuck his brains out.

Yet something pulled at her.

Maybe it was the challenge.

Or the fact she hadn’t had sex in…hell, forever.

Maybe she needed a night of angry sex to relieve some of the stress of being an overworked OB/GYN at a small hospital.

Maybe she just needed a few explosive orgasms to help her forget about all the debt she had. All the responsibilities.

She peeked out of the corner of her eye at him. Officer Asshole had a shit-eating grin on his face. Surely, it wouldn’t take much to wipe it off.

“Where are you heading?” she asked.

“Taking you home.”

“Take me to your place.”

His head snapped in her direction and the truck swerved when he jerked the wheel. He straightened it out and concentrated back on the road. “What?”

Yep. Now he wore a frown instead of that cocky grin.

“Take. Me. To. Your. Place.” The words were distinct and forceful. She wanted to make sure he knew she wouldn’t take no for an answer.

“Why?” he asked, the suspicion thick in his voice.

“Really?”

“I want to make sure I’m not hallucinating,” he said.

“To fuck me into oblivion.”

His eyebrows rose, but he kept his eyes on the road. “What if I suck at sex?”

“You won’t.” She smirked. “Assholes are always good in bed.”

His brows crept even higher. “Sounds like you know from experience.”

“I do.” Unfortunately, it was the truth.

“Maybe I can’t get it up.”

Carly looked at his lap. The distinct bulge in his jeans kind of shot that lie to bits. “Assholes can always get it up.”

With a cocked eyebrow, he asked, “You have a thing for assholes?”

“I must.”

Cheesus Was Here by J.C. Davis

Cheesus Was Here

Genre: Realistic Fiction, Contemporary, Young Adult, Humor, Fiction

Synopsis:

Sixteen-year-old Delaney Delgado knows miracles aren’t real—if they were, her kid sister wouldn’t be dead. So when the image of baby Jesus appears on a Babybel cheese wheel, she’s not buying the idea that God’s got a dairy obsession. Soon, religious signs begin turning up all over Del’s hometown, tiny Clemency, Texas. Overnight, news vans fill the streets and religious pilgrims start searching for God in the discount aisle of the grocery store.

Hell-bent on proving the so-called miracles are fake, Del convinces her best friend, Gabe, to help her find the truth. While Gabe’s willing to play detective, as a preacher’s son he’s more interested in finding evidence that supports the miracles. But when the whole town becomes caught up in religious fervor and even the late-night talk show hosts have stopped laughing and started to believe, finding the truth might cause more trouble than Del can handle. This novel is neither pro nor anti-religion, and will appeal to fans of contemporary YA novels that explore deep themes with an element of humor. The voice and characters are funny, strong, and full of heart. This is a book for anyone who loved Saved!

A programmer by day, I write YA fiction, the occasional short story and have far too many hobbies to keep up with. I live in Dallas, Texas with my husband, two kids and a pair of hedgehogs with nerdy names.

Interview with J.C. Davis

1. What is your favorite part of this book and why?
There are so many things I love about CHEESUS WAS HERE, but Del’s photography addiction is one of my favorites. Del’s whole world has collapsed and she uses her polaroid camera to try to reframe things. It’s the lens she uses to make sense of the world when nothing makes sense at all. I can relate to that on a couple of levels, having gone through a few major losses when I was young, and also from a photography aspect. My mom handed me my first camera when I was four and I’ve never stopped snapping pictures. Much like Del surrounds herself with snapshots of her world, I try to fill my work and home with snapshots of my family and friends.

2. If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?
I’d spend my day stalking sweet old Mrs. Deardly, a dotty old lady who visits the Gas & Gut convenience store every week and always buys the same two things: A bottle of cherry cough syrup and a pack of gum. Even though she lives alone, wears dentures, and never has a cold. Like my main character Del, I’d really like to know what Mrs. Deardly is up to and that’s one mystery that even I haven’t solved yet!

3. If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?
Everyone says Harry Potter, right? But seriously, if I could only choose one book, I wish I’d written FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON by Daniel Keyes. That book is so beautiful, hopeful, heartbreaking and well written. Every word is perfect. The way the complexity of the prose mirrors the main character, Charlie’s, evolution and devolution is brilliant and a stunning underscore to the events of the novel. It’s one of my favorite novels of all time and one I continue to re-read frequently. In that same vein, Lisa Genova’s STILL ALICE is phenomenal for the exact same reasons. (I can’t resist recommending books. I love them too much!)

4. Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?
My characters are entirely from my imagination. Most of my characters arrive in my mind with names and back stories already in place. Though a few I do have to dig and research and coax until I learn more about them. Delaney Delgado was with me from the moment I first thought of writing CHEESUS WAS HERE. But her best friend, Gabe, underwent quite a few changes. Most notably, his name changed from Raymond to Gabriel. I was sitting at my desk one day when I finally noticed that my main characters’ names were Del and Ray. I figured having the pair sharing names with a major publishing imprint was a bit odd. Gabe fits the character better in any case so I’m glad I made the switch.

5. What made you want to become a writer?

Harry Potter! No seriously. I had a few story ideas as a teen and in college, but I never did anything with them. Then, much, much later, I fell in love with the Harry Potter series. One problem – I finished the first four books in a matter of days but when I went to get book five, I discovered it wasn’t out yet. It wouldn’t come out for three years! I didn’t know that then of course. All I knew was that I was in love, I needed a Harry Potter fix, and I needed it now. So I discovered fanfiction. And once you’ve read enough fanfiction you start thinking you can write fanfiction. So I did. And people liked it! So I wrote some more. Then some more. Then I joined a Harry Potter writing group. Then I decided to write a novel-length fanfiction. After that, I knew two things: one, I could finish a novel and two, enough people liked my writing that I figured I was doing something right. The next logical step was to write original fiction. I haven’t stopped writing since! Though I did hang up my fanfiction hat.

EXCERPT:

I needed time to check the facts and make sure what Thorne was alleging was actually true. “What does the Dead Duke want from me?”

I was buying time. If what Thorne said was true, there had to be a workaround.

“That you do your duty. It’s all in that envelope. In short, however, he wants you to do what all good dukes must do—marry and produce a male heir. And a spare would be nice, though not required under the terms the late duke specified. Though I believe there may be a bonus for one.”

I snorted. “You’ve got to be kidding? This is the twenty-first century!”

Thorne sat calmly, legs still crossed. “The late duke had no sense of humor. He didn’t joke, I assure you.”

“What are the terms?” I said as I frantically tried to find an out. “I assume there’s a timeline?”

I sure as hell would have made a timeline. It was time to start thinking like my adversary.

“The late duke specified that you must be married by midnight of the date one month from the date of his death. In this case, Valentine’s Day.”

Damn.

“Pacific Standard Time, I hope.” I tried to keep calm and match Thorne’s demeanor while I plotted a way to escape this fate. “I would hate to be caught by a technicality.”

“Exactly so, Pacific Standard Time.”

“I’m not even seeing anyone. What does the Dead Duke want me to do? Advertise for a bride?” I laughed. The whole situation was ridiculous.

“Surely, Your Grace, getting a bride shouldn’t be a difficulty for Seattle’s Second Hottest Bachelor?” He had the traces of a tease in his voice.

Did Thorne actually have a sense of humor?

Damn that magazine article that was sitting open on my table. Thorne must have been able to read upside down.

“Less than a month isn’t even enough time for a bride-to-be to get a decent wedding gown, let alone plan a wedding. Assuming there was already a

bride-to-be.” I shook my head. “The Dead Duke wants me to snap up just any bride?”

I snorted, losing my amusement at the situation. There were adventures. And there were disasters. This was shaping up to be the latter. “He’s not as discriminating as I would have expected about the mother of his future heirs!

“Isn’t a year more traditional and a more reasonable amount of time to find a wife? If there’s ever a timeline stipulated in stories and movies, it’s always a year. What’s the damn hurry?” I was hoping to buy some time.

“I’m a young man,” I argued. “I need more than a damn month to find the right girl and fall in love.” Not that that seemed likely. “Even a matchmaking service will need more than that.”

Thorne nodded. “I appreciate your concerns. The late duke was a cautious man. Because you are the last male Feldhem, there is no time. If something should happen to you…”

He let the unsaid hang in the air a moment. “Being in love has never been a prerequisite for aristocratic British marriages. Lineage, breeding, family name, and money are much more important.”

I sighed, heavily, wondering how I could outwit him.

“Once again, you underestimate the late duke,” Thorne said. “He was supremely concerned about the mother of his continuing line. Before his death, he, in essence, picked out your bride.”

“What the hell!”

Thorne ignored my outburst. “The late duke wants his bloodline to merge with his American first wife’s, as he believes it should have in the first place. His will stipulates you must marry a single, childbearing woman from her line.” He paused. “There is only one woman left who meets the requirements.”

Of course there is. Fantastic. An arranged marriage. What’s next?

“So who is this woman?” I said, hoping she would be as against marrying a stranger as I was. And not a complete mess.
