book blurb

All I wanted was luck—the good kind. I’d lost my job, a jerk hacked my bank account, and I caught my best friend screwing my fiancé. When stood up by my Internet date in a bar, I met the perfect man—tall, dark, and handsome in the most expensive suit. He was out of my league, but I didn’t want forever.

I barely remember the words he whispered under the veil of sin and seduction. I didn’t believe in Satan, God, Heaven or Hell. I thought he was kidding. A figment. A dream.

I was wrong. With one, breathless yes, my fate was sealed.

Businessman by day, demon by night, Leo Weston now owns my soul in exchange for good luck. Time is ticking as he works to secure my mother’s soul, too. Somehow, I have to take him down despite him being so damned gorgeous, glib, and devious. Will my gift of twisted luck be enough to save her and protect my heart?

“What would you give, Olivia, to have your revenge?” he asked.

“I don’t want revenge.” But honestly…I’d sell my soul for some good luck.

“What did you say?”

I frowned. “I don’t want revenge?”

“No, the other.”

“I don’t recall saying that out loud.”

He leaned closer and practically whispered, “Say it anyway.”

I licked my lips, unable to tear my gaze from his chocolaty one. “I—” I licked my lips again. “I’d sell my soul for good luck.”

“Would you?” He leaned forward on his elbows, interested and eager for my answer.

“Would you?” I countered, shocked by his words and that I’d even contemplate this to begin with. People didn’t sell their souls. I didn’t believe in God, Satan, Hell, or Heaven. When I was little, God hadn’t helped my mother or me when we’d needed him most. I sure as hell didn’t see any help on this horizon.

“I already have. Paid the piper, too.” Blatant honesty and sadness quirked in his slight smile.

Now I sat a little taller. Had this guy been through hell and back? No way could someone fake that look, the one of cold despair. I knew it too well. I had seen it on my mother’s eyes, viewed it in the mirror when I gazed at myself. I had thought Mr. Perfect hot and out of my league, but this…maybe this soft admission put him square in my playing field.

teasers

meet the author

Mia Downing started creating heroes at age four, but her heroes back then rode ponies to the rescue and only kissed her on the cheek. Today, Mia's heroes still rescue those in need, but the price of their toys and the expertise of their seduction leads to a whole lot more. When Mia isn't busy creating new stories for her readers, she fills in as an underwear model for a prestigious lingerie company. She also lives in New England with her family, and enjoys horses and knitting.

Fun facts: Mia can juggle (poorly,) create balloon animals and face paint. She was the hit entertainment of two family parties. No clown suits were involved.

SYNOPSIS:

Love is blind…
Especially when you’ve been abducted.

Caught in the dredges of life, Elise had come to the grudging conclusion that mediocrity was all she’d ever have.
Until a routine shopping trip turns into a deadly affair.

Taken. Two men, one a brute and the other an enigma. A cabin in the woods. One dangerous agenda.

Blindfolded and held captive, Elise’s mundane existence just got a whole lot more interesting. Thrust into the unknown, held prisoner by a man with rough hands and a gentle voice, she’s faced with her own demise while struggling against a growing desire for the unacceptable—her captor.

Will Elise make out with her life—and heart—intact?

EXCERPT:

What kind of person became attracted to their kidnapper? It was too early for her to claim Stockholm Syndrome, so that just left insanity. Or the sex drought. She hadn’t had a close encounter of the penis variety in far too long to be healthy.

Well, she wasn’t about to start with his!

A door creaked open, and Elise felt the air change as they stepped into another room, the musty smell of dirt and dust thicker than in the rest of the place. Spinning her around, Manhandler gave her a gentle push, and Elise plunked down onto the edge of the bed, its springs screaming in protest as she bounced and fought against rolling backward into the center of the mattress.

“This thing must be ancient,” she commented without thought.

“I’d say seventies, at least.”

“Seventy years?” Elise screeched in disbelief. She almost leaped clear off again, considering what manner of filth it must harbor.

“Seventies as in what decade it’s from,” Manhandler clarified.

“That’s not much better.”

“Suck it up, buttercup.”

And so she would. Elise glared behind her blindfold at him, hoping he could at least feel her indignation and resentment. Except she hardly felt it herself, so he probably couldn’t either. Drat. She was a piss poor hostage. Where was her fire? Her raging sense of self-preservation? That snappy attitude all the fictional heroines in her plethora of romance novels had?

Left all that back in Neverland, she thought to herself. A self-deprecating smile began to form. Elise had never been much of a fighter. Just a sad and lonely girl living in a lonely world. Blah, blah, blah. Guess I’ll go eat worms.

“Whatever you’re planning, don’t,” Manhandler said in a calm manner that belied the threat inherent in his statement.

Elise wiped the smile off her face instantly. “I’m not planning anything.”

“Right.” He didn’t sound convinced. “Let’s keep it that way, shall we?” His hand smacked her thigh, startling her. “Lie down. Get some sleep.”

Elise eased herself down onto her side, grimacing as she thought of all the critters that were probably living among the blankets and within the mattress. God, was the pillow even safe to touch? “Where will you be?”

She heard Manhandler move around to the opposite side of the bed, and when he sat down, her body rolled to meet him in the middle. “Right here, buttercup.”

Elise gasped, scrambling for the edge of the bed—as far from him as possible without defying his orders.

“What,” he said with a laugh. “Did you really think I was going to leave you alone in here, so you could get up to mischief? Not hardly.”

That wasn’t exactly what she’d been thinking, but Elise would have done some snooping around, maybe searched for an exit. Not that she expected either man to leave her in any position to get them into trouble. They seemed to be one step ahead at every turn. Turns that were few and far between.

Elise froze in place as he settled in behind her. Releasing a little groan of approval, he shocked her to hell and back when he grabbed her around the middle and hauled her back up against his chest. Breath puffing against the back of her neck, Manhandler said in a sleepy voice, “This is for your protection as much as it is mine. Don’t get any ideas, just sleep, and we’ll get along just fine. Deal?”

What could she possibly say? No deal? He had her right where he wanted her, leaving Elise no choice but to play the hand she was being dealt. Unable to make her voice work, Elise simply jerked her head in affirmation.

“Glad you agree, buttercup.” Within a matter of seconds, he was out cold, his arm a vice holding her in place. And Elise? Well, she wasn’t going to sleep anytime soon.

SYNOPSIS:

Alpha Squad has received its very first assignment and recruit Adam King is excited to jump head-first into the action. When the team arrive in the shifter refugee camp in Sevenoaks to investigate some attacks on the local population, the evidence seems clear: the attacker they are looking for is a shifter. And one in particular keeps popping up in suspicious circumstances; Felicity Weir, who works in the camp. There’s just one catch: Adam’s inner bear insists that Felicity is his mate. Now, he’s torn. How can he help make Alpha Squad’s first mission a success, when he can’t endanger the woman who appears to be their prime suspect?

Bear shifter Felicity Weir has been looking after the shifter refugees camping near Sevenoaks ever since they started streaming in from Europe some months ago. She is determined to serve, to help these displaced people build a new home and future for themselves. Then the attacks began and the mood in Sevenoaks grew more and more hostile toward these newcomers, and by proxy, against her. First it was livestock that turned up dead in the local villages, soon after, human victims started to turn up. All the evidence points toward the refugees, but Felicity cannot accept that one of her kind would be capable of such violence. She has no choice but to take matters into her hands and investigate the deaths herself.

With Alpha Squad and the local police hot on their heels, Felicity and Adam must join forces. Will they be able to prove her innocence before public opinion is irreparably poisoned against the shifters, and their chances for a happy future together are destroyed?

EXCERPT:

Felicity wasn't sure what woke her up. It wasn't a noise, but a sensation or a presence. She blinked a few times and stared at the ceiling.

There it was again.

A tug in her chest which told her she wasn't alone.

It wasn't a bad feeling; it was reassuring and warm, like a cozy blanket to keep the cold out. A smile formed on her lips. It was Adam.

Felicity got up and made her way through the living room straight to the front door.

There he was.

"Hi," she said, and opened the door wide.

"I didn't disturb you, did I?" he asked.

She shook her head. "You came just at the right time."

Felicity stepped aside and watched him enter. There was something different about him now. He was a mess of feelings and thoughts, making it hard for Felicity to focus on any one of them.

"What's going on?" she asked. How did you know where I live? Of course, she didn't mind him turning up here, but that didn't make her less curious.

Adam turned and fiddled with his vest, retrieving a familiar looking notepad and holding it up in her direction.

"I got this off the detective," Adam said in a matter-of-fact tone.

Felicity took the notepad and studied it carefully. A rare glimpse into the inner workings of the mind of her main enemy on the police force. "You stole this?" she said. She wasn't even sure she wanted to know the exact circumstances under which he obtained it.

Adam shrugged. "Borrowed it. I was hoping to get insight into the police investigation. They're not exactly telling us anything."

Felicity frowned. "No? I thought Alpha Squad was collaborating with the police."

"Yeah, we thought so too. It's a rather one-sided affair."

If that was the case, then why was he here sharing the detective's notes with her and not with his team mates…?

There's something you're not telling me.

Adam pressed his lips together. I'm sorry.

Felicity stepped up to him and rested her hand on his arm. What is it?

"I'm off the team. At least for now. The major wants to avoid any appearance of impropriety."

Felicity sank down onto the sofa, her hands tightening around the notepad. Now what?

Adam sat down next to her and took her hand. A jolt of electricity passed from his skin into hers; at least that was the nearest description to how it felt.

I'm so sorry. But no matter what, we'll figure things out together.

Felicity closed her eyes and tried to think. But all that achieved was to flood her mind with imagery of their kiss in the woods. How did shifter couples achieve anything at all, when the intense attraction between them overwhelmed everything else, even rational thought?

"It'll be okay, right?" Felicity mumbled.

"I know it will." Adam wrapped his arm around her and held her close.

She could hear his heartbeat so clearly. How it had sped up the moment they touched and continued to hammer away at a feverish pace now that she was safely tucked in his embrace. Perhaps this was the right thing to do. Perhaps they owed it to themselves as well as each other to blow off some steam, so that they could dive into the investigation with renewed vigor and focus.

That was her justification to satisfy her mind anyway. Her heart and body didn't care to rationalize; they just wanted to act.

Adam sensed the change in her; of course he did. Such was their connection.

He scooped her up off the couch and carried her through the short hallway into the bedroom. It was a mess; the bed wasn't made and laundry was piled up on the chair that stood by the wardrobe. Felicity might have felt awkward about the state of the room with anyone else, but not with Adam. He hadn't even noticed it.

His eyes were fixed on hers.

Excerpt:

THERE’S MORE to the Buffalo Shuffle, now,
than lackadaisical dancing.
Some
larger skewedness is lending a hallucinatory edge to things. Cisco believes
it’s inside his head, at first—attributes it to the incessant flicker and flash
and the crash of classic rock ’n’ roll. The dancers
are stepping back and forth, back and forth, over and over, faster and faster,
caught in a local loop. Leary and Brian are still there at the wraparound bar.
“Where’s Bia?” Cisco yells at them as he
approaches.
“You
young fellers,” says Leary. “You mean to say you’ve gone and misplaced her?”
“Was
she good?” Brian leers. The music has suddenly stopped, so this query comes
across loud and clear. Then the lights come up and everything holds still, a
fluorescent morgue.
“A
go-go bar with bright lights and no music,” says Leary. “What a cockroach feels
like caught out in the open.”
 Things
are going awry. Cisco’s senses of place and balance tell him he’s moving,
though in fact he’s standing at the bar. He glimpses an evil grin just before
Brian wheels his chair around and heads off towards the back of the bar. Leary
is looking uncharacteristically apprehensive. Things are fast going to hell.
Cisco hasn’t seen this type of disintegration in a long time, even in drills.
Today’s Worlds are supposed to have intregral fail-safes. Nevertheless, Cisco
expects the nausea and handles it. Leary doesn’t look well, but he seems to be
under control. “This isn’t good,” he manages to say before a blast of music
drowns him out.
It’s
interesting, from a technical point of view. Spotlit in the gloom at the far
end of the stage a good ten meters away, Cisco can see, in exquisite detail, a
constellation of pink and blue and gold glitter stuck to a dancer’s bare
backside. But the floor at his feet has gone indistinct, a featureless mystery.
Then, when he looks up again, he can’t even see the girl, or the end of the
stage. The flashing red light that marks the toilet is only a pulsing smudge.
Cisco
checks back to the near distance, and now the detail is surreal. Cisco fights
down another twinge of nausea. The spatio-temporal axes are badly askew. He
looks away from it all to collect himself; he focuses on the floor in time to
see the roach hit-and-run victim reconstitute itself, its mess all coming
together from the smear. Sporting a single bit of red glitter on its carapace,
it scuttles backwards to disappear amid the debris. Cisco is gripped by the
strongest sense of déjà vu he’s ever experienced. He sees Leary deck the burly
tourist, the same guy as before, the same wham-wham-wham combination except
this time from a different perspective. The ebee jerk drops his beer bottle,
and Cisco hears the smash from behind the bar—the visual and spacialized
auditory cues are out of whack. Two or more different pieces of music are
blaring. The beats accelerate, subtly at first, then faster, and Cisco resists
the natural inclination of the heart to race in sympathy. An instant later the
beer reappears on the bar. The guy drops it again, and it smashes. This time
the sound comes from where it should. Cisco watches as the shards reassemble
themselves and the beer is sucked back into the bottle. He ducks at the smash
coming from just above and behind his head. The bottle smashes and reassembles,
smashes and reassembles. The sound is coming from random points, no longer in
phase with the visual representation of the bottle’s impact.
“Let’s
go!” Leary is shouting at him. “Let’s get out of here.” His lips aren’t in sync
with the words. “Sorry, Kid. I’m bailing.” Then he’s gone.
The
World is falling to pieces. Rapid foreground-background reversals are being
complicated by phase dissonances and fractal oscillations. This is chaos. Cisco
can’t tell whether the motion-and-perspective trackers are functioning; even if
they are, they wouldn’t be able to make sense of this. Bangkok World is fast
disintegrating, reality engines on a runaway track to total dementia. Part of
it briefly resolves itself as a bargirl wobbling past on platform boots—maybe a
real telep, given that she appears to be panicking—though the sound of her
passing doesn’t even register, much less include reverb. A scream issues from
Cisco’s shirt pocket, some woman expressing acute distress, although Cisco
knows she isn’t really in his pocket.
He
can bail anytime he wants to, but he doesn’t want to yet. He falls against a
barstool and clips his forehead on the bar top. There’s pain, lots of it. More
psychic than physical, but liberal doses of both. He shuts his eyes, pulls
closer to his center. This is only a perceptual thing, this assault on his
integrity. He can handle it. He knows he’s actually safe and sound back in his
own cradle in ESUSA. He knows this, but it doesn’t reassure him as much as it
ought to.

He looks for his console, just so
he knows it’s there. It isn’t.
