Interview with Cynthia Kuhn
How did you come up with name of this book?
It was a process! I knew I wanted to have the word “Vanishing” in there, and we wanted it to have a similar structure to the first book title, which had something academic plus something mysterious. So I generated lots of potential titles, and this is the one that stuck. There were different phases...originally, it was Vanishing Lessons, then A Study in Vanishing, then finally The Art of Vanishing, which made the most sense because it ties into Arts Week, which is a big part of the book.
Do you read yourself and if so what is your favorite genre?
Yes, I read constantly: since I’m an English professor, it’s required for work, plus I read a little bit every night for fun too. My favorite genre is traditional mystery.
Do you prefer to write in silence or with noise? Why?
I draft with music on in the background (usually classical), but I have to revise without any sound because it’s a different kind of concentration.
If you could choose one of your books to be made into a movie which would it be and why?
The first in the series because it sets up everything to come, and I could “see it” when I was writing it, so I think it would translate visually. (Then again, I could see the second one too! May I choose them both?)
Do you write one book at a time or do you have several going at a time?
I prefer to focus on one at a time. But when I finished the first book, I put it away and drafted the second one. Afterwards, I went back and finished the first, then returned to the second. Yes, it’s confusing too me too...
Thank you for letting me visit!

From bestselling author Mia Kerick comes a New Adult novel of Gay Romantic Suspense that will keep you up reading all night!

Matthew North waited ten years to heal from the devastating wounds inflicted by the man who abducted and abused him as a child. Living reclusively on a tropical island—with no company but his four cats—he merely avoids the lingering pain.

Wearing twisted ropes of mutilated skin on his back, Matt struggles with a profound hindrance—the scars that deaden his soul. However, on the night he meets lively Vedie Wilson, a local restaurant busboy who expresses his gender by wearing lipgloss and eyeliner along with his three-day beard, things change.

Gradually, Vedie and Mateo unite in friendship. Through a series of awkward encounters, the pair learns each other’s secrets. Vedie learns that an angelic face can front for a scarred soul. Matthew learns that the line between one’s masculine and feminine sides is blurred. Can they embrace the painful stories behind each other’s scars if they’re to find everlasting love? Or will surrendered love come to be yet another blemish on their souls?

EXCERPT:

Vedie

“Lookin’ good, pretty Miss Vedie.…mmmhmm….” No matter if I’m dressed like a dude or a lady, Joey always stares at me as if I’m a juicy bowl of strawberry shortcake—he licks his lips and I know he wants to take himself a nice big bite of a flavor he can’t get at home. Then he slaps a hand hard against my thigh, and creepy-slow, it climbs my leg. It’s headed for my ass cheek, or my name ain’t Vedie Wilson.

“Hands outta the cookie jar, Joey, my man.” I don’t appreciate it when any dude gropes me without asking for permission first. But the sad truth is I ain’t never gonna like Joey’s hands on me. While he gawks, I pull a shimmery hairband out of my bag and wrap it around my head to hold the damp dreads off my face. “Got yo’self a sweet tooth, looks like, Joey. You’d be wise to get your ass home to your sweet wife, not that you asked me for no words of wisdom.”

“Not gonna even think about going home ‘til I had me some fun,” Joey replies, jamming his hand in his pocket—probably to keep it from curving ‘round my ass.

When I bend down to rinse the sweat off my face he stays quiet and don’t goose me. Maybe this time he heard what I told him about gettin’ his butt home to Miz Joey. But more likely he’s checking out my butt.

“Baybeee… uh huh…. mmmhmm… nice ass you got there in them sweet little shorts….”

I sigh real loud, “I got some shit to do here, big dawg, so’s if that’s all you wanted…” The only way to get this guy to take a hike is to tell him point blank that he’s gotta head on out. “Catch ya on da flip side, ‘kay?”

He leans in so close I can feel his scratchy beard brushing on my neck and I shiver in the bad way. He takes a deep sniff—I guess he likes the smell of sweaty dude—and then finally bails. Right now, I sorely wish the tiki hut restaurant I work at had one of them one-person anything goes restrooms—for a dude, a lady, or whoever you feel like at the moment—but at least now I’m finally alone in the men’s room.

I pull out my makeup bag and quickly powder my nose so’s it don’t shine, and glide a deep shade of maroon over my lips, but I take the time to be an artist with my eyeliner and mascara ‘cause I figure eyes oughta say somethin’. When I look good enough that I’d wanna do me, I figure I’m looking good enough for public viewing. My new perfume smells like the freedom I got down here on Placida Island—coconuts and wildflowers and the ocean and honey— I spray it all over my neck and chest.

As I saunter outta the men’s room, I don’t miss that it’s kinda funny how I went in here looking all-dude but comin’ out, you could mistake me for a lady. Ha! More like a red-hot, sexy mama—smooth and silky everywhere ‘cept for the four-day beard.

Author Bio:

Mia Kerick is the mother of four exceptional children—all named after saints—and five nonpedigreed cats—all named after the next best thing to saints, Boston Red Sox players. Her husband of twenty years has been told by many that he has the patience of Job, but don’t ask Mia about that, as it is a sensitive subject.

Mia focuses her stories on the emotional growth of troubled young men and their relationships, and she believes that sex has a place in a love story, but not until it is firmly established as a love story. As a teen, Mia filled spiral-bound notebooks with romantic tales of tortured heroes (most of whom happened to strongly resemble lead vocalists of 1980s big-hair bands) and stuffed them under her mattress for safekeeping. She is thankful to Dreamspinner Press for providing her with an alternate place to stash her stories.

Mia is proud of her involvement with the Human Rights Campaign and cheers for each and every victory made in the name of marital equality. Her only major regret: never having taken typing or computer class in school, destining her to a life consumed with two-fingered pecking and constant prayer to the Gods of Technology.

Excerpt Two:

The hallway was mostly empty with a bench or two placed along the walls. Open doors lined both sides of the wall, gaping pools of deeper dark opening off the main path. I tried looking inside a couple of classrooms, but it was too dark to make out anything.

At the end of the hallway something caught my eye—a tiny gleam of pale color against the wall where it should have been dark. I turned my steps to investigate and crouched down to look closer. It took me a minute to realize what I was looking at and when realization came, I shoved my hand hard against my mouth to hold back a whimper. The white gleam came from bones piled in a jumbled heap against the wall. Judging by the empty skull peering from the mound, the bones were human.

Even worse, behind the first heap of bones was another. And another. I wasn’t sure how many there might be continuing back through that hallway. I wasn’t going to find out either. Investigating this was not a job for one guard on her first patrol. I stumbled to my feet so I could turn and run for the exit. Suddenly, I heard a noise behind me. Not much, just a whisper of sound like a sliding footstep against the tiled floor. I whirled, trying to locate the source of the noise, but I could see nothing.

Marcii?” I called. I admit it, my voice shook a little. Silence answered me. “Hello?” I called again.

KC Cullen TO DANCE WITH ANGELS Release Blitz

KC Cullen has released her debut novel, To Dance With Angels. Continue for a sexy excerpt and enter the international giveaway.

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release date: February 28th 2017
Purchase: Amazon

Synopsis:

Since she was a little girl, Kyra Byrne sacrificed everything for her dream to be a prima ballerina, braving broken toes and scheming rivals. Now the dream is finally within reach: she’s a soloist at a prestigious Boston company, her tumultuous past safely behind her.

But all that is put at risk when the company brings in a new choreographer, the smoldering Damien Delacroix with the sexy accent, rebellious tattoos, rippling abs, and scandalous reputation, a man who’s ruined as many careers as he’s built up. And the moment he walks into the studio, Damien only has eyes for Kyra.

Against the wishes of everyone from Kyra’s boss to the drama-queen prima, he casts Kyra as the lead in his new ballet. This could be the break she needed so badly—or it could be her ruin when her past begins to resurface in unpredictable ways. As Damien and Kyra’s chemistry sizzles on and off the stage, she realizes she’s in too deep. Kyra never dreamed of risking everything she worked so hard for, everything she painstakingly built—all for a man. But with the premiere looming and with the other dancers gunning for her downfall, she could lose more than her heart.

We’re dancing an intricate pas de deux:
I trust him to lift me up to the heavens and drop me and catch me and lower me
down, easy and smooth as an autumn leaf in the wind. It’s thrilling to trust
him. My thighs quiver and part as his fingertips slip under the hem of my
dress, and I remember once again, with sudden shocking clarity, that I’m not
wearing underwear.
He gives a half-sigh, half-groan into my
mouth as his fingers run up my inner thigh. Electricity travels in their wake.
My thighs snap closed as if on command,
trapping his hand between them. I close my mouth, catching his lower lip with
my teeth. “No,” I groan into his kiss. He grasps my thigh, his grip every bit
as strong as when he made me soar under the studio ceiling. It makes me think
of all the other ways he can make me soar—with those hands, with those lips and
tongue, with the thing straining at the zipper of his jeans. I had
underestimated the strength humming within him, an electric storm, a natural
disaster that nothing can stop. A primal force. This is what makes his dancing
so compelling, his choreography so soul-grinding. He pushes my legs apart again
and his hand dives further down until his fingertips reach the spot where my
thigh meets my crotch. Only a quarter of an inch higher, and—
I pull away, twisting out of his embrace.
I’m panting and my heart thunders; there’s another thundering pulse between my
legs. I’ve never wanted anyone this badly.

About the Author
YA author by day, KC Cullen writes romance and romantic suspense by night. Her debut, TO DANCE WITH ANGELS, will be released on February 28, 2017. She lives in northern Ontario with her husband, two teenagers, and hyperactive Dalmatian.

All she needs is the courage to face her fears. Can she save him from Falling?

The
following is an excerpt from BLEEDING HEARTS Demimonde Book 1 by Ash Krafton

In the great
hall housing the Egyptian exhibitions, I immediately noted the change in the
atmosphere. The room was cool and dry, its climate controlled to mimic the conditions
in which the relics had existed in their native land.
The entire room
had been designed to resemble an Old Kingdom temple. The main lights were
dimmed while strategically-placed spotlights emphasized massive columns and
magnificent wall carvings like sunbeams through temple windows.
I scanned the
room. No other tourists. Even better. I meandered, enjoying the rare
opportunity to linger.
Craning my neck,
I ran my gaze up each of the columns, reading the images, admiring the palm
leaves carved at the tops like great stone trees. Eyes toward the ceilings, I
turned slowly around, admiring the handiwork of the ancient artists.
What was it like
to live in those lands and those times? Could an ancient version of my spirit
have been there, stepping barefoot and silently through a sandy temple like
this one?
Lost in
contemplation, I was completely unprepared for the shock of smacking into
someone, bumping him hard enough to lose my balance. I'd have fallen had he not
caught my arm. Wide-eyed with consternation, I stammered an apology to the
handsome but serious-faced gentleman.
"You are
not hurt, I hope?" His voice, deep and smooth, sent shivers marching down
my neck, between my shoulders, down my spine.
"I'm
okay." I shook my head, too shy to make direct eye contact, wishing I'd
checked my hair and lipstick before coming in. "I'm far too adept at being
inept."
He flashed a
grin and I caught a glimpse of nice white teeth. "Temples are places for
spiritual reflection. It is forgivable if your vision was turned inward, rather
than toward where you were walking."
His expression
softened by amusement, he tilted his head toward the pillars. "Majestic,
aren't they?"
I stole another
glance at him—black hair smoothed back into a discreet tail, clear light skin
framed by long sideburns, strong jaw culminating in a square, cleft chin. Like
the other items in the museum, something about him made me want to look closer,
inspect each detail.
A subtle flush
warmed my cheeks and ears so I quickly turned back to the heights of the
exhibition. Murmuring a sound of agreement, I circled the column, stepping a
few feet away so I could see both him and the stone. "Do you visit this
museum often?"
Furtive glances
allowed me to take in more of his appearance a tiny section at a time. Clothing
dark as his hair. Long blazer, something in between a suit coat and an
overcoat. In one hand he carried a bound book and fountain pen, as if he'd been
making notes.
His gaze was
calm and steady and entirely on me. Taking a deep breath I permitted the
contact of the direct look. My boldness was well-rewarded. His Paul Newman lips
brought to mind the sculptured busts on display in the Greco-Roman Quarters and
he wore a stern expression that cast a veil of hardness upon his features,
enhancing the impression he'd been carved from marble.
Except for his
eyes. The Roman busts bore eyes that were blank and white but this man's eyes
were alive with bright green color. Like gemstones, they glittered and drew my
gaze.
"No,
actually," he said. "My first time here. Although, I admit, I'm drawn
to places like this." His voice made music of the words—deep bass notes
and soothing rhythm.
"Ah!"
I said. "A man after my own heart." His left eyebrow arched so
sharply I thought it might disappear into his hairline and I hurriedly
continued. "Are you a professor?"
"No,
nothing like that. I do studying of my own, it's not a living. It's more of a
hobby. Personal research, of sorts."
"Studying
past times is one of my pastimes. It's my preferred form of
entertainment."
"Mmm."
Eyebrow cocked again, he cast a disapproving look at me and swept his hand
around the contrived temple. "Would the gods be pleased to know they are
reduced to the level of entertainment?"
"I hope
so." I kept my tone light. Considering the seriousness of his expression,
I didn't want to accidentally insult him. "Otherwise, they'd have to be
content with staying dead, right?"
His gaze swept
over me and I shivered again as if the touch had been tangible, a brush of
fingertips against my cheek.
"Well, I'll
leave you to your worship. I mean, your wanderings." He gave me a
conspirator's wink. "Unless..."
He hesitated,
with a quiet clearing of throat as he tucked his notebook and pen into an
inside pocket. "You wouldn't mind a companion? Sometimes one sees things
differently when seeing through another's eyes. I would appreciate a new
perspective."
I mulled it
over, listening to the rain spattering the windows and distant voices echoing
faintly from other rooms. Although I'd looked forward to a quiet afternoon, it
might be nice to spend it with someone who seemed to share my interests. He
certainly was attractive, and his pleasant voice intrigued me.
I realized I'd
become used to living inside a shell. This man made me want to step outside for
once.
"I'd like
that." I smiled at his pleased expression. "I'm Sophie, by the
way." I stuck out my hand in introduction.
Instead of
shaking my hand, he bent his head over it and pressed polite lips to the backs
of my fingers. The quaint gesture would have seemed strange and out of place
had we been elsewhere. "I am Marek. Pleased to make your
acquaintance."
Fingers tingling
from the unexpected kiss, I fought the urge to curtsy. "Well, Marek. Lead
me into the past."
His almost-smile
sent a thrill down the back of my neck. "That's exactly the sort of thing
I'd hoped you say. Shall we?"
He turned on his
heel and swept out a hand with a slight bow, indicating the archway to another
exhibit. For the first time since I'd been coming to this museum, I wondered
what I'd see on the other side, and was surprised to realize I wasn't afraid to
find out.

Losing Kyler Excerpt:

In this moment, I hate my mother, and I’m mad as all hell that she isn’t here for me to yell at. To demand she tell me the Goddamned truth and explain why she thought it was such a good idea to lie about virtually every facet of my life. My hands ball into fists at my sides, and I’m barely holding it together.

“I also discovered that he was working for a firm in Belfast at the time your mother told you she met him. He wasn’t working locally, Faye. There’s no way Saoirse could’ve met him in the way she described to you.”

Liar! How could she do this to me!

I don’t even know who I am anymore, and every memory I have of my parents is tarnished by the knowledge that it was a fabrication. That I was being lied to every single day of my life.

Why? Were they ever planning on telling me the truth?

Hopping up, enraged and upset, and struggling with a million other emotions, I sweep the contents of my dresser clear across the floor. Picking up the stool, I fling it across the room, watching as it smashes against the wall, the sounds of splintering wood adding to James’s shocked gasps. Tears erupt from my eyes, and my cries fill the room as I slump to the ground, sobbing uncontrollably into my hands.

Ky kneels down, gently wrapping his arms around me from behind. His limbs are tense, his arms a little stiff, and I feel it too—the lure of his warmth and the call of his body battling against what we’ve been told, forcing us to maintain a certain distance.
“Kyler.” James’s voice contains clear warning.

“Shut up, Dad. She needs me, and I’m only comforting her. You’re the one who fucked up here, not us. And you’re a damn hypocrite to criticize us after all you’ve done.”

Ky’s statement is paradoxical in part, because the truth is more complex than that. Is James the hypocrite or are we? I don’t know what to think anymore. I massage my temples, digging my fingers into my skin with brutal intensity, welcoming the pressure. What is right and what is wrong? I’m not sure I know anymore, and my jumbled brain is incapable of constructing logical thought patterns.
