Book Excerpts
Excerpt #1: The Return of Meisha
I think someone is stalking me.
I say this, not because I’m paranoid, but because I’ve been seeing the same strange car outside my house almost every other day for the past two weeks. I haven’t told anyone but Nita about it. She thinks I should call the police or something, but what are they going to do? Whoever is inside the car hasn’t done or said anything to me, so what would I be reporting?
Of course that could change. I realize that today when I step outside onto the front steps of my school. This could be the afternoon that changes everything.
“What’s wrong?” Nita asks as I stop dead in my tracks, almost tripping this kid walking on my heels.
There it is again. The same black car with the tinted windows. I recognize it right away because it has two small dents in the back door and a bright red ball on the tip of the antenna. I still can’t see who is inside, and I can’t tell if the person is even looking my way, but it’s definitely the same car.
“What’s wrong?” Nita asks again. She looks across the street. “Is that it?” she asks and I nod.
“I need to know,” I say as I step down off the curb. The car starts to move forward and I wave and scream for it to stop. It does, and I keep running towards it, even though I hear Nita yelling behind me that I shouldn’t go. She catches up to me and pulls on my sleeve, yanking me back before I reach the car.
“Even three-year-olds know not to talk to strangers, Kendra!” she warns. “Come on, girl. Let’s go.”
I know she’s right and I sigh, letting her lead me away. There’s a buzzing noise behind us as we’re walking, and I can tell the driver is opening the window now.
“Keep going!” Nita whispers, her grip on me getting tighter.
All of a sudden I hear my name called out from behind me. Nita and I both stop. She looks at me. We turn at the same time and step forward a little bit towards the car. I hear ding ding ding as the door opens, and a lady’s leg—rockin’ the fiercest thigh-high boot I think I’ve ever seen in my life—hits the pavement, and then the rest of the woman slides out from behind the wheel.
“Who are you?” Nita asks her, not letting go of my arm.
“My name is Meisha,” the young woman replies to Nita, but she’s not looking at her. She’s looking straight at me.

“She’s my sister,” I add, my voice so low I can barely hear myself saying the words.

Excerpt #3 Stanton Estate:
“So, why are you here, bothering the living? Why haven’t you crossed into the light?”
The ghost chuckled, as if amused. Then his gaze turned dark. Before Barrett could stop him, the angry ghost transformed into a white mist and dove into Barrett’s nose and mouth. One moment Barrett was a casual observer of a long ago family squabble, the next, he was part of the action, lying on the floor peering up into Theodore’s hate-filled eyes.
You think you can come in here and steal what I built, Ernst? Is that it?
Theodore was standing over Barrett with a pistol pointed at his forehead. Barrett’s heart hammered in his chest. He thinks I’m his brother, Ernst. He’s really going to shoot me. This is real. Barrett’s lips formed words that were not his own. It’s mine, you bastard. You took it from me. Then Barrett spit on the ground.
The loud concussion of the gun firing was the last thing Barrett heard before the spirit vacated his mind and body. Barrett found himself curled in a ball against the wall, drawing in deep, frantic breaths. Teddy stood, chuckling at the pathetic clairvoyant he’d taken down in a matter of minutes. You are a simple-minded medium, aren’t you? Theodore said, as Barrett slowly pulled himself up. Gary stared at the space the ghostly voice inhabited. The light doesn’t want me, and I don’t want it. I made my choice; I’m judged. I will remain here. Keep Ernst’s thieving bastards from taking what doesn’t belong to them.
Gary gave Barrett a hand up. It was then that Barrett noticed the ghosts had chosen sides. Before, he thought the ghosts were all clustered around Theodore. Actually they were divided in half. One group was surrounding Theodore on one side of the room, and a second fright of ghosts stood on the opposite side, glaring at them. Front and center in that group was the brother, Ernst, who Theodore shot and killed over a hundred years before.
Barrett made a move to climb the staircase when Theodore appeared directly in front of him. Not a step farther. Barrett started to shove past the spirit when the walls creaked and the staircase rumbled under his feet. He reached out, grasping the railing. Without even closing his eyes, Barrett slipped into a trance-state. His physical body was on the first riser, holding the banister. But someone or something had hijacked his mind for the second time this evening, taking him to a place he didn’t want to be.
It was pitch-black, and Barrett was alone. After his eyes adjusted to the dark, he realized he was in an inner part of the house, like a crawl space inside the walls or, more likely, a basement. A plink, plink, plink echoed against the stone walls as water from a leaky pipe dripped down on a hard surface in a distant room. There was a loud, electric, hum in the background. Up ahead, he heard the clank of the furnace firing up. He placed his hand against the wall and yanked it back quickly, blowing on his fingers. “Son of a bitch!” The cinderblock was glowing hot. Were the stones melting? Sweat rolled down his cheek and he wiped it away. Just a moment ago it had been a cool forty degrees in the house. Now, it had to be at least ninety. He pulled off his hoodie, not that it helped much. Sweat stained his T-shirt around the collar and under his arms. If he didn’t figure a way out of this, he was going to die of heat exhaustion. The house creaked and shifted. Every hair on his body stood at attention. Correction. If I don’t get out of here, the place will fall down on top of me.
A voice he hadn’t heard in over a year spoke to his mind. Run! Barrett’s eyes flew open and he gasped. He was back in the Stanton’s living room with Gary staring at him like he had grown three heads.
“Let’s go.” He grabbed the sleeve of Gary’s shirt and pulled him toward the front door and onto the front lawn, to what Barrett deemed a safe distance from the house.
“What the hell happened in there?” Gary asked Barrett. “You were standing there with me, but you were in some kind of altered state. I tried to talk to you, wake you up, but it was clear nobody was home.”
Barrett opened his mouth, then closed it. He had no answer. His mind was still processing all the paranormal shit that had been thrown at him in such a short time period. “How long … was I out of it?”
“About five minutes. Your eyes were wide open, but you weren’t seeing me.” Gary’s eyes were drawn to the psychic’s shaking hand as he twisted his silver ring. “You need a break before we do the rest of the walkthrough?”
“We’re done,” Barrett told him. He was intensely aware of his heart pounding in his chest. He could hear the blood throbbing in his ears. After taking a deep, steadying breath, Barrett turned and power walked to the tech trailer.
Gary ran to catch up. “What’s wrong, man? That ghost must’ve really shook you up.”
“Not the ghost. The house.” He turned to look back at the twin windows flanked by black shutters on the second story. In the dark, they looked like menacing eyes, daring him to return. Bile rose in his throat. “There is something way wrong with this house.”

My Review of Spirit Chaser
Let me start this review of by just saying: For the last 2 days this book has scared the crap out of me.  Yep there ya go I admitted it. I love a good paranormal story and this is one of the best by far I have read in a long time.  At times the book drags on a little bit, but when it scary it takes your breath away.  By dragging on I don't really mean this book is slow. There was the parts towards the first of the book when they were getting ready for the next season and it was a bit slow. Actually though those parts do help you understand parts of the book later on and why they were important. You just don't realize it at the time. My advice is keep reading. My other advice is read with the light on. This book is scary at least to me.
I really enjoyed the writing style of Kat Mayor. I loved the characters in the book. Their life like qualities were great and they truly flowed through the story. At times you wished some of the characters were real people so you could grab them and shake them. Mainly Austin Cole.
Austin is the lead investigator and founder of the Spirit Chaser investigations crew. Spirit Chaser Investigations is a band of friends who are also ghost chasers. He is also the world's leading paranormal investigator and is the star of cable television's most popular show which is also named Spirit Chaser Investigations.
At the end to the prior season of the show one of Austin's best friends and also the team psychic is hurt and resigns from the crew. After being asked by Austin to recommend someone in comes Casey Lawson. The fun begins. Austin is a self centered person and Casey is a no nonsense kind of girl. so the clashing begins.  Sorry that's all you get about the story, I don't want to ruin it for anyone.

This book is not all about scary stuff it is also  takes you down the path of each of the members lives. I love how every character in the book is a star in their own way. No one gets pushed to the side so the 2 main characters do all the shining.   I would really love to see this book turned into a movie or television series truthfully.

My review for the Melancholy Ghost:
As you can see from my review of The Spirit Chaser I love this series. I was absolutely thrilled to see this 2nd book. I dove right in and did not climb out until the last page then I pouted becuase ti was over. I cannot wait for the next book to come out.

In this book, Austin is back. He is not aware that he is dead and his thinking process is scrambled and no memory of being dead or how he got there. Prudence a ghost from the first book is back as well. She if the one who found Austin and brought him to Casey.

The team has agreed that until Austin is more ready mentally to know he is dead they should act lie he is still alive and not tell him. This actually goes on for far to long. As memories start to slowly return Austin becomes more and more suspicious and finally he runs across the film of his death at SCI and everything comes crashes in on him, and what he believes is the betrayal of his friend and love of his life for not telling him.  In a fit of rage he takes off, luckily Prudence follows him and gives him a pep talk and also helps him learn how to manage his afterlife.

Stopping there with the story review I don't want to go into any more detail and ruin the whole book. This is a must read as a series. The 2nd books picked up right where the 1st left off. The ending of this book leaves the story to continue in the next book. I cannot personally wait for book 3. This is one of most interesting series I ihave read. Usually when I read a series unless I have all the books I don't usually pick the series back up later unless I just happen across the next book. This series I have had this 2nd book on my TBR list since finishing the first a while back. I will be adding the next book as soon as I know the name of it. I also have the author on GoodReads and subscribe to her email so I can keep track.

I love how this series if full of detail but not overwhelming. The details are pretty much important. Some books pack in details and you can skip over them but with this book you pretty much need the details which are more like clues, almost like a mystery. I still love how Kat Mayor makes everyone a star of her books, everyone has a staring roll in the books. They each play a key part in making this series as great as I feel it is. This book didn't have as much of a scare factor to me as the 1st book but it was pretty much about Austin. Not to say that there were not plenty of investigations by the crew during the book, and not to say that there was no scare factor. One investigation in this book did have a really creepy scare factor to it more then the others, you will have to read the book for that though..

Hurry up Kat and get book 3 out to me!!!

The debut novel of a masterfully emotional, high stakes trilogy that will have readers forfeiting tradition to gamble with love…

December and Austin have a traditional, storybook marriage complete with defined roles. Married young, they’ve shared nearly a decade of passion and love. But Austin harbors secrets, and the pressure of losing his job makes those festering skeletons impossible to ignore.

Turning to alcohol instead of his wife, Austin finally drives December into the arms of their closest friend, Cord, despite her intense loyalty. Cord has loved December since the day they met. His moral compass is challenged and lines are blurred when Austin steps aside and insists Cord take his place.

Forfeiting all, Austin must face a harsh truth. Take control of his life, or forever lose the woman he loves.

EXCERPT:

She’d kept their home with equal pride, in a dated dynamic they both revered because it worked—until he lost his job.

With a shudder, she faced the present. Now Austin did nothing. No longer did she need to worry about being available to him, because he showed no interest in her, sexually or otherwise, not even in regard to her safety.

Something neglected and desolate snapped inside of her. Pressure built behind her eyes. The weight on her shoulders transcended to pressure in her chest. Unable to hold it all inside, she burst into tears.

“Hey, hey, hey, why are you crying? Shit.” Cord stood, clearly uncomfortable with her show of emotion. “Is it your head?”

He paced, searching for something in the kitchen, clattering objects across the counter, and returning with a paper towel and his keys. “I’ll take you to the clinic. Here, blow your nose. Stuff’s dripping out.”

She snagged the rough paper and blew. “I’m sorry,” she sobbed. “It’s just… He… The car… How many beer cans will I clean up tomorrow? It’s so quiet all the time. Mrs. Fields is a bitch! We have no fuel! The wood doesn’t burn right, because we used up all our seasoned supply. My toes are always fucking numb! And now my tires are bald…” The last of her tirade came out in a wail.

As she blubbered, muttering half thoughts and nonsense an outsider wouldn’t understand, she struggled to get her emotions under control. Reeling in her hiccups and sobs, she apologized for her outburst as Cord’s face morphed into utter panic.

She wiped her sleeve under her nose and sniffled. She was tougher than this and it surely was not the time or the place for a breakdown.

When she focused on his expression again, a wet laugh squeaked out. Poor guy. His eyes were wide with horror. She sniffed and repeated her apology, “Sorry. I’m just a little overwhelmed.”

Unblinking, he watched her cautiously. “Was that some sort of female exorcism? I didn’t understand a word you said, but you should know that’s my last napkin. After that, all I can offer you is a coffee filter.”

Author's Bio:

Melissa Muldoon is the Studentessa Matta-the crazy linguist! In Italian, "matta" means "crazy" or "impassioned". Melissa has a B.A. in fine arts, art history and European history from Knox College, a liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, as well as a master's degree in art history from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. She has also studied painting and art history in Florence.

Melissa promotes the study of Italian language and culture through her dual-language blog, Studentessa Matta (studentessamatta.com). Melissa began the Matta blog to improve her command of the language and to connect with other language learners. It has since grown to include a podcast, "Tutti Matti per l'Italiano" and the Studentessa Matta YouTube channel. Melissa also created Matta Italian Language Immersion Tours, which she co-leads with Italian partners in Italy.

Dreaming Sophia is Melissa's first novel. It is a fanciful look at art history and Italian language and culture, but it is also the culmination of personal stories and insights resulting from her experiences living in Italy, as well as her involvement and familiarity with the Italian language, painting, and art history.

As a student, Melissa lived in Florence with an Italian family. She studied art history and painting and took beginner Italian classes. When she returned home, she threw away her Italian dictionary, assuming she'd never need it again but after launching a successful design career and starting a family, she realized something was missing in her life. That "thing" was the connection she had made with Italy and the friends who live there. Living in Florence was indeed a life-changing event! Wanting to reconnect with Italy, she decided to start learning the language again from scratch. As if indeed possessed by an Italian muse, she bought a new Italian dictionary and began her journey to fluency-a path that has led her back to Italy many times and enriched her life in countless ways.
Now, many dictionaries and grammar books later, she dedicates her time to promoting Italian language studies, further travels in Italy, and sharing her stories and insights about Italy with others. When Melissa is not traveling in Italy, she lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is married and has three boys and two beagles.

Melissa designed and illustrated the cover art for Dreaming Sophia. She also designed the Dreaming Sophia website and created the character illustrations that can be found in the book and on the Dreaming Sophia websites.
