book blurb

Haunted by a photographic memory, I couldn’t escape the worst night of my life.

The blood they shed.

The pain they endured.

The evil that still walked free.

It was all I saw. Those memories, my childhood—the images.

Silenced and scarred.

But nothing lasts forever.

Torment turned to blinding rage. Hate sought revenge, which pursued death.

Then there was life.

The moon.

Rylee Anderson.

I had to choose...

excerpt

Sweat dripped down the side of my face, collecting in the collar of my shirt. The heat was almost unbearable, but I didn’t want to be inside. Mom was away for work again—this time for a full week—and Dad was stuck in front of the television set watching another football game. I hated it when Mom was gone, because my dad didn’t really know how to handle me. He had no problem bonding with my brother, but where I was concerned, he acted completely clueless. So Sundays became the day I’d take a book and sit in the back yard beneath a tree.

I brought my water bottle to my lips when something caught my attention near the privacy fence, separating the houses in the neighborhood and the wooded area behind it. It ran up the side yard, offering us seclusion to the house next door. The young woman who lived there often had guests over, which made my parents uneasy. But now, someone was in her back yard, climbing her fence.

No…not just someone.

A boy.

His stick-straight hair, the color of sand, hung to the middle of his ears. But I couldn’t see his face. He had his back to me as he climbed, just before jumping over to the side filled with trees. His black T-shirt was a blur. He was there one second and gone the next.

I stared at the barrier, wondering if I could climb over and follow him. I knew everyone in the neighborhood, but I’d never seen him before. I glanced over my shoulder and waited a moment, just to make sure my dad or my brother weren’t on their way out. When I noticed no movement beyond the sliding glass door, I jumped up and ran as fast as I could. Without second guessing it, I began to scale the tall slats of the wood.

Once I made it to the top, I looked down and realized it was much higher on the other side. I’d never been in the wooded area before, and for a second, I contemplated just going back to my yard. I thought about my book I’d left beneath the tree and my father who might’ve gone looking for me. But then I remembered the boy—and I so desperately wanted to find out where he came from.

Curiosity got the best of me.

I swung my leg over and, with the pace of a sloth, I used the wood between the slats to lower myself to the ground. Standing on my feet again, I searched through the trees, hoping to spot the boy with blond hair and a black shirt.

But he was nowhere.

I carefully walked farther into the trees on the soft dirt, keeping as quiet as possible. I didn’t want to venture too far, because I worried I wouldn’t be able to make it back to my house. From this side, I couldn’t tell which house was which. So I made sure not to deviate too far from behind my back yard.

It felt like an hour, but realistically, it was probably closer to five minutes before I decided to give up. I thought it might’ve been better to have just waited until he came back. I turned around, ready to head home, when I spotted him.

Or…he spotted me.

Her Secret Ranger The Men of At Ease Ranch #2 By: Donna Michaels

Kissing
the sexy soldier was a dare she couldn’t resist…

HER SECRET RANGER
The Men of At Ease Ranch #2
Donna Michaels
Releasing March 6th, 2017
Entangled Lovestruck

Kissing
the sexy soldier was a dare she couldn’t resist…

By-the-book
event planner Beth Brannigan’s best friend dared her to kiss a cowboy. She
should have said no. Instead, she said please…again and again. If
her brother finds out she’s dating—okay, kissing—okay, sleeping with—one
of his military buddies, he’ll kill her. Assuming he doesn’t kill his friend
first.

Former Army
Ranger Brick Mitchum isn’t a relationship kind of guy. But then he meets Beth
and starts to wonder if maybe it’s time he settled down. She’s mysterious.
Unpredictable. Curvy in every way he needs… And hiding something. He’s just got
to figure out what

“I know what we should
do. Let’s play truth or dare.”
Crud.
Beth drew back and
adamantly shook her head. “Let’s not.”
“Come on. We could both
use something to lighten things up. So, let’s see…” Her friend’s gaze narrowed
as she tapped a finger on her chin. “I can’t help but feel there’s something
you’re not telling me about the Roadhouse. The fact you knew about the line dancing
has my Spidey sense tingling. So…truth: Did you meet someone there the last
time you were in town?”
Damn. She’d forgotten
about her friend’s astute superpower. “What are you talking about?”
Rachel’s amused, albeit
determined, blue gaze bore deep. “Either tell me the truth about that weekend
or take a dare.”
Double damn.
Beth didn’t do dares.
Ever. She’d always taken the “truth” option of the game during their
adolescence. She couldn’t risk reprimands or hospital bills back then. Not much
had changed. But she wasn’t about to reveal her sexy cowboy weekend, either.
With a lift of her chin, she held Rachel’s gaze. “Dare.”
The bugger’s grin grew
wicked as satisfaction gleamed in her eyes. “I dare you to kiss the next cowboy
who walks through the gate.”
Beth gasped. “I can’t do
that! What if he’s married?” She jumped to her feet and headed to a nearby
trash can to toss her garbage. “Not happening.”
Rachel followed and
shrugged. “You have to. You chose dare. But, I’ll amend it to: you have to kiss
the next single
cowboy who walks through the gate. We’ll watch for wedding rings. And just
because you’re not looking doesn’t mean you can ignore the da…amn.” Her friend
blinked. “Wow, Beth. I almost wish you’d given me the dare. Turn around
and check out your ‘single’ cowboy.”
Without giving her the
chance to protest, Rachel grasped Beth’s shoulders and physically turned her to
face the gate and one hell of a sexy cowboy. Well over six foot of solid muscle
that rippled under a black T-shirt and a pair of jeans hugging lean hips and
thighs, the guy oozed hotness she felt with an invisible wave of heat.
Her throat went dry. It
was…him. The cowboy from two
weeks ago. Seriously? What were the chances he’d walk back into her life at
that exact moment? “Uh…”
“I know, right? And
there’s not a wedding ring in sight. Now go over there and kiss him.” Her
snickering friend pushed her after the hunk striding toward the livestock
section of the fair. “Go on before he gets away. Or is that what you wanted?”
She gulped. Pulled herself
together. The knowing tone in her friend’s voice revealed she expected Beth to
chicken out.
Wrong.
Any other time, yes,
she’d lose the dare. It was childish and irresponsible, and she didn’t have
time for foolish games. But she did have time to help her friend de-stress. Her
friend who was also her client. It was Beth’s duty to put her client at ease.
So, technically, it was her duty to kiss the sexy cowboy whose body she knew as
well as her own.
That was her story and
she was sticking to it.
“Fine. I’ll do it.”
Rachel squealed and
clapped her hands.
Grasping bravado with two
fists, Beth set her shoulders, lifted her chin, and marched after the hot guy
striding away from her down the fairway. So what if she’d decided he was part
of her past? The opportunity was too good to pass up. Things like this never
happened to her.
Zigzagging around
fairgoers, she avoided running into two children wearing a blue coating of
cotton candy, and closed in on her prey. Her confidence rose with each step.
Not only had she received her first ever dare, she was actually in the position
to have the upper hand on the challenge.
A flicker of guilt and a
touch of anxiety mixed with excitement. She pushed them both aside and smiled
when the cowboy suddenly stiffened and came to a halt. It was as if he could
feel her presence as sure as she could feel his. Not wanting Rachel to see the
guy’s expression, Beth didn’t give him a chance to turn around. She slid in
front of him, her anxiety fading at the pleasure curving his mouth into a sexy
grin, dimpling his cheeks.
“Hello, Brick,” she said.
Then she cupped his
deliciously scruffed jaw, pulled his face down, and kissed the ever loving heck
out of him.

It should’ve been the start to my new life, but I pushed her away.

I thought it was just one night with my brother’s best friend.

The boy I had dreamt about since he gave me my first kiss, under the lights of the Ferris wheel.

I knew he was about to leave for a year – no chance for a future.

But our one night together would create memories for a lifetime.

Our paths crossed again, but I had lied, and he was no longer the man he once was. He was warring against demons. Against the silence that was threatening to swallow him. And I had kept a secret from him, one he would never forgive me for.

But my secret was about to be ripped open. Displayed for the world on national news. And I had only one way to repair the damage.

I had to trust the man I lied to.

The man I never got the chance to make a life with.

The only man who could save what we had created together.

I knew falling in love with him was bad for us both, but I did it anyway.

For a brief moment, we had it all. Even though he was leaving to join the Marines and I had four years of college ahead of me, he was everything I ever wanted, but didn’t think I deserved.

But real life has a way of dashing dreams—and that happy future we envisioned together? It disappeared at the hands of a monster.

Ten years have passed, and I’m not the same naïve girl who believed in happily-ever-afters. When my mother passes away and I find myself caring for my two teenage brothers, the last thing on my mind should be reconnecting with the hottie-turned-hero who I loved at seventeen.

If I want a second chance at his heart, I’ll have to trust him with the secrets that tore us apart.

Please note there is a graphic scene that may be a trigger for some.

I thought I put my past behind me.

I lost everything when I testified against my boyfriend for the murders of five women. After the jury delivered a life sentence, I ran. I hoped if I could disappear, maybe the horror he caused would, too.

When I return to Florida for the first time after his conviction, I’m determined to face my fears and get my life back. Then, a woman is murdered and I’m the only one who believes her death features the same signature as those I’m trying so hard to forget.

Instinct tells me to run again, but local cop Logan Blackwell has never let a suspect–or a woman–get away. He’s made it his own personal mission to solve the case and he needs my help to do it.

I have no choice once we learn I’m the next target, but I’m not interested in getting close to another man, especially not a sexy former Marine who has secrets of his own.

Excerpt:

“Have you
forgotten your mother’s last wish? I promised her I would marry someone as
beautiful as she. You're the only one who has the same golden hair, the same
smile, the same beautiful eyes. You are the only one who will do, who I can
love. The only one worthy of my love, my power, my body. You will be my bride,”
he declared as he ran a finger through my hair.
My teeth
clenched at his touch. The only thing keeping me in the room was the new plan
wheeling through my mind. Perhaps it would be clever enough to save me from
this fate. I could not live this life with him. I would rather die.
“If I am to marry you,” I began
softly, letting out a deep breath. “I have four simple requests.”
My father grinned and nodded, “Go
on…anything.”
It was clear he underestimated me
by way of his confident sneer. The way he stared down his nose at me, he
anticipated my requests to be silly and pedantic. I unclenched my white fingers
and licked my bottom lip.
“For our marriage to be arranged,
I will require new gowns. I request three. The first, made and spun from the
rays of sunbeams.  The second, silver and
made from the full moon’s light. And the third, woven from the star dust that
falls from the heavens.”
My father’s face contorted with
question and he puffed himself up, but continued to listen.
“My last request,” I continued, “A
fur coat made from all the kingdom’s wild animals, so when the harsh winters
come, I can keep sickness and death at bay.”
I could feel my hands tremble
from my trepidation. I couldn't believe I had actually made such ambitious
demands—things truly impossible. What would the people think once they heard of
the kind, my father, going to these magnificent lengths to marry me? Would they
think I was a harlot? Would they think I encouraged my father’s behavior? My
stomach knotted.
“And this is all you request from
me?" he asked with his eyebrows lifted.
I could see the amusement light
up his face. As my throat constricted, I slowly nodded to him.
Maybe this would actually work.
Perhaps he would not see through my deceptiveness and agree. If he did, this
would grant me more time to collect my chattels, arrange an escape from the
palace, and move forward with my plans. I would never again be Princess
Aurelia, but I would avoid a future most grim and contemptible.
