(The Neverland Wars #2)
Published by: Clean Reads Publishing
Publication date: February 21st 2017
Genres: Fairy Tales, Retelling, Young Adult

Peter is plotting his retaliation against the latest bombing. Neverland needs an army, and Peter Pan is certain children will join him once they know what is at stake. The lost boys and girls are planning an invasion in suburbia to recruit, but in order to deliver their message, they will need the help of an old and dangerous associate—the infamous Pied Piper.

Hunting him down will require a spy in in the real world, and Gwen soon finds herself in charge of locating the Piper and cutting an uncertain deal with him. She isn’t sure if Peter trusts her that much, or if he’s just trying to keep her away from him in Neverland. Are they friends, or just allies? But Peter might not even matter now that she’s nearly home and meeting with Jay again.

The Piper isn’t the only one hiding from the adults’ war on magic though, and when Gwen goes back to reality, she’ll have to confront one of Peter’s oldest friends… and one of his earliest enemies.

EXCERPT:

They found the forest’s hiking trail moments before breaking the tree line. “Where are we going, Peter?” He was heading toward a mobile home community next to the state park.

He continued to walk with confidence. His usual cocky stride looked surprisingly like the swagger of an ordinary teenage boy. “My friend lives here. Don’t worry. Don’t look like such a stranger here.”

She didn’t want to appear conspicuous, but Gwen was too baffled to help it. The unkempt lawns were boxed in by chain-link fences covered in varying degrees of rust. They passed a lawn littered with bicycles; on the other side of the gravel street, two different cars were parked on the lawn, clearly non-functional. Satellite dishes were on every trailer home. Despite all being painted differently, the track housing still managed to present a uniformity of depressing color.

Multiple houses had motorcycles out front or a dog milling around their yard. When she and Peter passed a pack of Rottweilers, the dogs ran up to the fence and began snarling until all the other dogs in the neighborhood were barking too. “Ignore it,” Peter advised her.

She was scared. This was not the sort of place she ever expected to visit with Peter. She didn’t trust his ability to protect her here. This wasn’t his world, but it wasn’t hers either. They were both out of their element. Peter just didn’t have the sense to realize it.

Winding down the gravel road, Gwen matched Peter’s pace almost step for step. They approached a blue-and-grey house. Like the others, it had wooden latticework around the bottom to help obscure the fact it didn’t have a foundation in the ground. The square house reminded Gwen of how she would take shoeboxes and try to turn them into homes for her dolls by decorating them. It was hard to fathom that she was walking up the plastic steps of the porch to knock on the door.

She waited, feeling her heartbeat in her throat, her toes, and everywhere besides her chest. Even the predictable noise of the door opening startled her.

A woman with a long, black braid and beige cardigan stood in the doorway. Gwen looked up at her, and then watched as the sharp features of her dark face dissolved into unadulterated shock.

“Peter?”

The startled woman ushered them in. She was just as uncomfortable with their presence in the trailer park as Gwen. Once inside, they stood in a living room full of old furniture, facing a kitchen with old electric appliances. There was no unity or romance to the orange recliner, chipped mixing bowl, off-white blender, dull toaster, and sunken couch. It was a bunch of old stuff that looked like it represented several decades of objects abandoned at Goodwill. The chingadera and bric-a-brac wasn’t any more cohesive: porcelain angles, an antique pot, a vase full of bird feathers, and a stopped clock made the place confusing and strange in the same way her grandmother’s house had been.

“What are you doing here?” she hissed, pulling her cardigan close and tossing her thick braid over her shoulder and out of her way. She had a shapeless housedress underneath the beige sweater, and a pair of black leggings insulating her legs as she stomped around, heavy-footed in her leather slippers. She looked comfortable, except for the unexpected guests who were putting her so ill at ease. “You shouldn’t be here.”

“I need your help,” Peter said.

“They’re still keeping tabs on me.”

“That’s why I came in disguise.”

“You’re being irresponsible. You’re jeopardizing us both, and Neverland to boot.”

“I took all the right precautions. This is important.” Hollyhock and Foxglove wrestled their way out of the pixie purse and came twinkling out now that they knew they were safely inside.

“You brought fairies here?” she exclaimed. She leaned down and grabbed a hold of his arm, forcing him to look her dead in her dark eyes. Gwen wanted to leave. This wasn’t a friend, not anymore. This was a grown-up, and unlike Antoine the aviator, she was not amused with Peter’s wartime antics.

“What happens if they figure it out and come to question me?”

Peter scoffed. “You won’t tell them.”

“What if they threaten to arrest me? They could put me away forever until I told them what they needed to know, and nobody here would stop them.”

Peter broke free of her hold with ease; she wasn’t actually trying to restrain him. “Preposterous,” he declared. “If they did that, you would sit, stone-faced and silent in your cell until they all died.”

“What if they beat me?”

“You’d take the blows as though you were made of rock, and you would not speak.” Peter seemed to disregard the question.

“What if they tortured me and stuck blades under my nails?” she demanded.

“Then you would not even scream, but stay silent as a stone!” Peter insisted, hopping up onto a wooden kitchen chair at her dining table, looking down at the woman.

“What if they bring knives and cut off my fingers, one at a time, until I told them how to find you?”

Peter yelled right back, “Then you would steal their knives and scalp them all like the redskin princess you are!”

Her anger slunk off her face and out of her shoulders. She shook her head, frowning as a sad laugh escaped her. She clung to her sweater, blinking back tears, until, at last, she flung her arms around Peter. Still on the chair, he had to bend down to return the embrace.

“Oh, Peter,” she muttered, unaware of the tears slipping off her smiling face. “Oh, Peter.”

“It’s good to see you, Tiger Lily.”

Hannah Armstrong, the new

to scrimp on his students—something he refuses to do. The stubborn woman won't
listen to reason so he's taking matters into his own hands. He devises a plan
to secretly replenish the money that is surefire, as long as he’s not found
out. By stripping under the stage name The Dom and using an ironclad disguise
at Iron Rods, Austin’s only strip club for women, he and his hard body will
have his program flush again and soon.

But Hannah Armstrong has secrets
of her own. The rigid, by-the-rules school administrator harbors dark desires
to surrender to the titillation of BDSM. She needs a man—a real man—who can
melt her inhibitions and master her. Exploring the lifestyle is a dangerous
proposition for a small town principal though. Any whiff of scandal would

Dom at Iron Rods. The gorgeous male stripper so far away in Austin seems like
the perfect solution. Is there a chance she can satisfy her furtive fantasies
without being discovered?

Excerpt:
She was here for
a lap dance or more with the Dom. Time to get the party started.
Mack placed both
hands on her shoulders, then slowly squatted before her while letting his palms
drag down the outside of her breasts as he lowered himself before her chair.
Hannah let out a
moan.
A grin tempted
to show itself, but he held it back. She was getting into this.
So was he.
He continued on
a path down her waist, onto her thighs and stopped when he reached her
skirt-covered knees. Now crouched before her, he looked at her. Face-to-face.
Hers a study in heightened expectation.
When he pushed
his hands back up her leg, taking the hem of the skirt with him, a sigh escaped
her mouth and he nearly moaned himself. A dangerous amount of thigh now showed,
and what thighs they were. Firm but soft and went on for miles. His fingers
hovered so damn close to her hidden nest of curls, he could feel its welcoming
wet heat. His curiosity begged to take a quick peek beneath her skirt, but he
reminded himself he was a professional stripper. He was here for the customer,
and right now that customer’s gaze was locked to his.
He angled
himself between her bent legs, gently prying them apart to make himself room.
“So, tell me,
Hannah,” he started, the pads of his thumbs roaming over her warm skin, “what’s
yer pleasure tonight?”
“My pleasure?”
she asked dreamily.
“Would ye like
to take off yer top? Maybe yer skirt?”
Please say yes.
Once again, her
eyes widened and she swallowed a gulp of air. Her fingers flew to the open
collar of her shirt.
“No!” Her
high-pitched tone cut through the muffled music encapsulating the small room.
She shook her head and cleared her throat. “I mean,” she corrected quietly, “no
thank you. I’d…I’d like to keep my clothes on.”
Damn.
“Fair enough,”
he said, hoping he didn’t sound as disappointed as he felt. “This is yer party.
I want ye to enjoy yourself.”
Mack plucked the
hand she was using to hold her blouse and flattened it on his chest.
“Is this what ye
want?” He slid her palm down his abs, measuring her response. Her entire body
went limp, a small exhale leaving her lips. She offered him a timid smile.
He smiled back.
“I’ll take that as a yes.”
He searched her
eyes while moving her warm fingers over his stomach until they found the silky
top of his thong.
“Lower?” Even he
heard the gravel grinding in his voice.
Hannah bit her
lip. The sight of her teeth gnawing the plump flesh of her mouth was far more
erotic than he’d ever imagined.
After a beat,
she shook her head.
“No. Not lower.
I’m not ready for that.” She paused, and gifted him with a sigh. “Yet.”
Yet?
So there was
still some gumption in her.
Excellent!
“Then let me do
a little dance for ye. Sound good?”
She nodded.
“Before I do, I
want ye to let yer hair down.”
The unsolicited
words flew from his mouth, his lips betraying his long-held wish. But even as
the last syllable slipped out, he was glad they had. The tight bun Hannah
perpetually wore had bothered him from the first moment he’d met her.
 Her breath hitched.
“Are you
commanding me to take down my hair?”
Commanding?
Should he
command her?
The notion
certainly suited the situation. He was the Dom after all. Why the hell not?
“Aye, lass,” he
said, releasing his hold on her. “Now do as ye have been bidden.”
Goosebumps rose
on her arms. A sly smile spread across her face. Without any argument, she
reached for the offending bun and pulled the pins securing it in place. In one
whoosh, the long, blonde locks tumbled from the top of her head and spilled
over her shoulders, framing her face.
The stern
schoolmarm instantly vanished. In her place sat a sexy siren, and Mack couldn’t
deny her call.
“Does this
please you, Sir?” she asked.
Sir?
What the hell is
she—
Realization
dawned in that moment. His heart skipped and his head damn near exploded.
Holy shit and
fuck me twice.
My
take-no-prisoner boss is into BDSM.
The titillating
discovery shook him so badly, he struggled to keep from falling back on his
ass.
Mack looked
around the room, checking to see if anything had changed. It must have.
Somehow, someway, he’d stepped into the Twilight Zone. His boss had become the
subordinate, and he… the Master.
“Sir?” She
prompted. “Did that please you?”
He stopped
himself from blurting out, “Are you fucking kidding me? I’m the happiest man in
the whole damn state of Texas,” and then jumping up and kicking his heels
together.
Never in his
wildest dreams could he have imagined Hanna Armstrong, his prickly, uptight
principal, having a kinky side. Who the hell could have predicted something so
absolutely off the radar? And just when and how often did she let her freak
flag fly?
Mack willed his
body and mind to behave, waiting several heartbeats until he reined in all the
childish excitement flooding his system before he continued. He was the Dom.
Stuff like this was supposed to happen to him all the time. He had to be cool.
Stay in character.
“Aye, it does
please me, Hannah.” He cleared his throat. “Verra much.”

Welcome to the 1-Week Book Tour for The Sun God's Heir: Return, Book 1.

About The Sun God's Heir: Return, Book 1:

The Sun God’s Heir is a swashbuckling series, set at the end of the seventeenth century in France, Spain and northern Africa. Slavery is a common plague along the European coast and into this wild time, an ancient Egyptian general armed with dark arts has managed to return and re-embody, intent on recreating the reign of terror he began as Pharaoh. René Gilbert must remember his own former lifetime at the feet of Akhenaten to have a chance to defeat Horemheb. A secret sect has waited in Morocco for three thousand years for his arrival.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For three thousand years a hatred burns. In seventeenth century France two souls incarnate, one born the child of a prosperous merchant, the other, determined to continue an incarnation begun long ago.

In ancient Egypt, there were two brothers, disciples of the pharaoh, Akhenaten. When the pharaoh died, the physician took the knowledge given and went to Greece to begin the mystery school. The general made a deal with the priests and became pharaoh. One remembers, one does not.

The year is 1671. René Gilbert’s destiny glints from the blade of a slashing rapier. The only way he can protect those he loves is to regain the power and knowledge of an ancient lifetime. From Bordeaux to Spain to Morocco, René is tested and with each turn of fate he gathers enemies and allies, slowly reclaiming the knowledge and power earned centuries ago. For three thousand years a secret sect has waited in Morocco.

After ages in darkness, Horemheb screams, “I am.” Using every dark art, he manages to maintain the life of the body he has bartered for. Only one life force in the world is powerful enough to allow him to remain within embodiment, perhaps forever. Determined to continue a reign of terror that once made the Nile run red, he grows stronger with each life taken.

Praise for The Sun God's Heir: Return:

A great read! From the first sword fight I could not put it down. Adventure, romance, action with just the right amount of his history and mysticism. The main character Rene displays all the qualities a true hero should; loyal, smart, humble, and a ferocious warrior all opponents will fear before their end. I could not help but feel fully immersed in the story. One of the best reads I can remember, I am eagerly anticipating the next book in the series!! ~ Jason Battistelli

The Sun God’s Heir is a page turner. The development of the characters made you really care what happens next to each person, good or evil. The descriptions of the ships, homes and countryside transported me into the era and made me feel like I was one of the onlookers or a part of the story itself. The moment I finished I had to have the second book to see what happens next. Fabulous!” ~ Karyn Krause Cumberland, Esquire

The Sun God’s Heir is a fascinating combination of historical period fiction, sci-fi, and political intrigue. Elliott Baker weaves a tale that one would have to be catatonic not to enjoy. The character development ranks among the best I’ve read; truly, by halfway through the book I found myself thinking like Rene (the main character) in my own daily life. This is the sign of mastery of character depth which is so often lacking in contemporary fiction. And the pacing! Rarely does a book seem to move at the speed of a movie without feeling haphazard. I applaud Elliott for pulling that off, as only an experienced screenwriter or playwright could. If you like a quality story that bridges traditional genre boundaries, then the Sun God’s Heir is for you! ~ Joshua Bartlett

Guest Post From Elliott Baker
ATTENTION

I’m fascinated by quantum theory. Wait, don’t run. Won’t be any formulas. I write fiction, after all. So we live in a huge soup of informed energy. What? Matter is energy that has decided to act in one particular way. Who decided? Stay with me here. Remember I’m not a scientist, just someone who thinks the universe is a fascinating place. A place worth thought. So these keys that I’m pounding on aren’t really solid. They look solid to me. Well, from what I read, if you look closely, they end up being energy moving along defined tracks with a ton of space between the tracks. Kind of like looking out into space. Why doesn’t the Enterprise run into stuff if it’s traveling many times the speed of light? Because space wasn’t named space for nothing. (Just re-read this last sentence. I crack myself up.)
So in my macro world, the world of keyboards, I’m looking at the letters and numbers on the keyboard, and I can’t see any space between the electrons. But I can imagine it. Evidently in the world of quantum physics, energy can choose to be either a particle or a wave, matter or energy, or both at the same time. I find this interesting, but way more interesting to me is if we are energy beings, and the energy is invisible, what do we do with it? How do we get it? Do we take it from each other?
When you are hungry, you feel a certain discontent. When you are really hungry, it grows to a demand. The vehicle each of us rides in requires fuel which is turned into a form of energy that can be used by our cells, creating all kinds of power, motive, thought, emotion, etc. Plants take energy directly from the sun. Is it possible that we also take energy directly from the sun. We’ve evolved or maybe devolved so that we get our energy second or third hand. From the sun to plants, to animals, to us. Before the advent of science and its sensory enlarging tools, the best man could do was reason from effects to causes. For the writer of fiction, it’s still a pleasant trip. Plants thrive in sunlight or die if left in darkness, therefore, sunlight is crucial to the plant’s survival. What about humans. Is McDonald’s the only way we get energy? A better question might be: Is McDonald’s the only way we can get energy?
If you’ve ever watched a live comedian on stage really killing the room, the person almost seems to glow. They’re on an emotional high. What is happening? It’s a small comedic venue, only thirty or forty people in the audience, but these people are hyper-focused on the comedian. Anyone who has been on stage knows the high I speak of. You feel good, excited, full of energy. Are the people in the audience sending energy to those on stage? It’s temporary, but while the attention of an audience is on you, it’s glorious.
If energy is exchanged in a situation like that of performer/audience, what about two people having coffee? Do we exchange energy with each other all the time? James Redfield thinks so.  The Celestine Prophesy came out twenty years ago. According to Mr. Redfield, not only do we exchange energy with each other, we forcibly take it. Who could imagine that? We’re such sweet little monkeys. We would never take something from anyone else. Redfield speaks of control dramas which we learn as children to defend ourselves from the energy vampires which surround us. Vampires. Now you’re talking. Ever wondered why the vampire is such an icon in our literature. Where could we have possible have gotten that idea?
In most martial arts, focus and concentration are key elements along with specific movements. The greater the focus and concentration, the greater the power behind the movement. Most of us live fragmented lives jumping from one thought to another. I don’t mean that in a negative way, just that we’re not trained Kung Fu masters able to meditate for a day on one blossom of a flower. The benefits of meditation are patently obvious, but not so easy to attain. In Aldous Huxley’s book Island a cynical journalist is shipwrecked on an island where trained Mynah birds continually say the word “Attention.”  We don’t. Don’t pay attention. Not really. And that is the crux of the matter. If we exchange energy, and I think we do, we do it through the medium of attention. We (And I include myself. Oh, look a bird.) seem to wander around at the whim of our senses, switching our attention to the thought or impression of the moment. Flashlights instead of lasers. Like Redfield, I believe energy can be obtained from many different agencies, not just other people. And in unlimited amount.
In my book The Sun God’s Heir: Return (Book One), the protagonist and antagonist were once brother disciples of the Pharoah Akhenaten. In that incarnation three thousand years ago they learned not only to control the energy that made up their physical envelopes, but to see and manipulate energy on different levels than the one customarily seen by humans. In The Sun God’s Heir trilogy, energy crosses time in the form of karma and if there is one universal law, it must be that of balance.
If there is discomfort in the universe it must in the form of imbalance. Since according to quantum physics, time appears to be merely a construct, the universal demand for balance does not seem to find our limited perception of time to be an obstruction. At least in my imagination it doesn’t.
The two ancient brothers, return to 17th century France, one in the normal way, birth, childhood, adulthood, and the other… Well the other has taken a darker route borrowing the body of a downstream incarnation. One remembers the powers taught at the feet of the pharaoh Akhenaten, the other must remember in order to survive and protect those he loves.

The Sun God’s Heir: Return should be shelved under Historical Fantasy for the time being. For a moment, imagine yourself in 1672 sitting and tasting the newest beverage, hot chocolate. Someone at the table speculates that there may be invisible waves that can carry sound and pictures. Just sayin’.
