The Fairytale Chicago of Francesca Finnegan by Steve Wiley

Title: The Fairytale Chicago of Francesca Finnegan
Author: Steve Wiley
Genre: Fantasy
“Did you know most anything that matters in this city was built by magic before it was built by men? Of course you didn’t. This city is different from other cities. The true history of it is unpublished. Lucky for you, I know it all by heart.”
~ Francesca Finnegan
In Chicago, a secret L train runs through the mythical East Side of the city. On that train, you’ll find a house-cat conductor, an alcoholic elf, a queen of the last city farm, the most curious wind, and an exceptional girl by the name of Francesca Finnegan.
When we first encounter Richard K. Lyons, he is a man who has long forgotten the one night, when he was still a boy called Rich, when Francesca invited him aboard the secret L for an adventure though the East Side. The night was a mad epic, complete with gravity-defying first kisses, mermaid overdoses, and princess rescues. Unfortunately for Rich, the night ended like one of those elusive dreams forgotten the moment you wake. Now, Rich is all grown up and out of childish adventures, an adult whose life is on the verge of ruin. It will take the rediscovery of his exploits with Francesca, and a reacquaintance with the boy he once was, to save him.

The Brown Line to Auschwitz

The Friday started no differently from any other. Richard took the Brown Line downtown to his place of business. For those who don’t know, the Brown Line is a ramshackle, barely functioning rail train built over one hundred years ago. It looks and operates as if its last tune-up occurred over one hundred years ago. The Brown Line is one of those color-coded trains that make up the greater Chicago L system, coursing through the city’s anatomy like old-man blood vessels, clumsily pumping life in and out of the loop at the city’s heart.
Richard’s ride downtown that morning was more depressing than usual, meaning it was basically soul crushing. The day dawned especially cold, and Richard’s particular train car didn’t have heat—something not unusual, though this didn’t make it any less terrible. The temperature on his phone read a crisp thirty-nine degrees, inside the train. The cold worsened his hangover. Every slight bump of the train racked his skull like an artillery explosion. The ride was one long, torturous barrage. Midway through, Richard nodded off, or fainted, only to be awakened by a man in a suit talking enthusiastically and obnoxiously on his phone about how he would project-manage the fuck out of that project. When a massively pregnant woman saw Richard wake, she pointed to her belly and asked for his seat. Richard lied and said he’d sprained an ankle, so couldn’t stand. No one on the train offered the woman a seat.
As Richard rose to exit the train, feigning a limp, he noticed for the first time some unusual graffiti written in large red characters on the ceiling of the train.
NEXT STOP AUSCHWITZ
Richard wondered how different the Brown Line really was from a Holocaust train. The Holocaust trains couldn’t have been more crowded than the Brown Line. The Holocaust trains most likely smelled worse, but how much worse? The Brown Line, frequented by homeless riders, often stank of trash and shit. Definitely more dead people on a Holocaust train. But then, dead people had been found on the Brown Line. The Holocaust trains must have moved faster, considering they were newer than the Brown Line—it took Richard forty minutes to travel six sluggish miles. The passenger load on the Brown Line was miserable. Probably not quite as miserable as the Holocaust riders, but certainly each passenger was unhappy in his or her own way. Clearly more diversity on the Brown Line.
Richard concluded that the main differences between the trains were their speed, their passenger demographics, their passenger life expectancies, and their destinations.

Interview with Steve Wiley
1. What is your favorite part of this book and why?  There is a chapter called The True Source of the Great Chicago Fire by Finbar Finnegan - the chapter was the most entertaining to write, and I think is the most entertaining to read.  It follows the father of Francesca Finnegan as he witnesses a relative of his accidentally (and drunkenly) burn the city down with his own daughter's baptismal candle.  If you like history, especially Chicago history, and a good short story, this chapter will blow your mind.

2. If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be?  And what would you do during that day?  I created a character named Templeton Goodfellow, brother of Robin Goodfellow (of Shakespeare Midsummer Night's Dream).  Templeton is an alcoholic elf, and the guy is just pure fun.  He's kind of a wily Mad Hatter.  If I had a day with Templeton I'd spend it on a tour of Chicago bars, drinking Malort (Malort is a disgusting spirit only available in Chicago).  Templeton is a storyteller, so we'd drink and he'd tell stories!

3. If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?  Peter Pan.  That book will live forever.

4. Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?  The characters within the 'real' chapters of the book (those which don't take place in the East Side of Chicago, that fantasy world we created), are all based on real people.  The characters within the fantasy world are all imagination.  I had fun doing both, but actually prefer creating new characters.

5. What made you want to become a writer?  I think storytellers are just born that way.  I don't remember having a moment where I said, "I want to be a writer", I've just always like to tell stories.

Book Tour "Zoysana's Choice" by Gordon A. Long

Title: Zoysana’s Choice
Author: Gordon A. Long
Genre: Fantasy
Discovered as a child living alone in the forest and growing up an orphan of mixed parentage, but under the protection of the king’s youngest son, Zoe is appreciated for her own merit by everyone, from the royal family to the lowest kitchen wench. But her secure nest is shattered by conflict in the king’s family, and soon she will have to decide where her loyalties lie.
She flees to her former home in the mountains, where she finds many answers, but not to the questions she is asking.
Then she is offered the chance to visit Kyabra, the home of her grandfather, to learn about that ancient culture.
But all of these travels come to naught when she hears of war at home, and she returns to Petrella to be faced with a decision that could stop a war and change the lives of thousands, but only at the greatest personal cost.
This is the first published work of a 7-book saga of standalone novels tied together by characters and setting. Books 4 to 7 are sequential, and Books 1 to 3 happen 400 years earlier.

Excerpt:
Most of the way through the town the armigerent was content to walk in the centre of the street, but once in a while he would notice something off to the side and wander that way. Each time, this caused consternation among the nearest bystanders, creating a minor stir in the normal flow of the crowd. At one point he veered close to a group of citizens and there was more movement than usual. A young child, separated from her mother, found herself confronted by the huge beast. Repeating the Kyabran equivalent of, “Doggie, doggie,” she toddled over to investigate. A rough spot in the roadway proved an obstacle for the tiny feet, and the baby was dumped in the dust. She sat there, deciding whether she was injured enough to cry or interested enough to get up and keep going. Patu solved her problem by strolling to her.
Seeing the huge nose conveniently near, the little girl grabbed two good handfuls of whiskers and hauled herself to her feet then stood there, unwilling to let go of such a convenient support. Patu stood also, wondering what to do. The child’s mother was in a similar quandary, but less placid about it. She had taken a step forward, but could not bring herself to approach closer. She wavered, almost in hysterics, but whether through inability or sufficient control, made no sound.
Finally the baby decided she was solid enough and let go, crowed and patted the huge, bristly nose. More “Doggie, doggie.” Patu decided that this was fun. He wagged his tail and presented his nose again for more patting. There was a distinct relaxing of breath among the bystanders. Pleased by her attention, he tried to nudge his head under her arm so she would scratch his ears. The nudge was too much for her precarious balance, and she sat down again, rather hard. She looked up with the beginning of a pout. The armigerent’s tail went down, and he glanced around with a guilty set to his ears. Several people laughed.
Zoe thought that this had gone on a little too long for the mother’s nerves, so she whistled softly. Patu delicately reached out and caught the girl’s coat near the collar and picked her up, turned her towards her mother and set her on her feet. Then he gently nudged her. The chubby legs churned in order to keep from falling and propelled their owner straight into her mother’s anxious arms. From that high vantage, the toddler squirmed around, pointing and calling her “doggie” refrain proudly. When the laughter subsided enough that she could be heard, Zoe kneed her horse forward and bowed in the saddle.
“If you don’t mind, madam, and your child has finished playing with my armigerent, could we go on now? We are holding up a lot of people.” She gestured to the rest of the procession, filling the road behind.
The mother, flustered by the quick flurry of emotions and the laughter of her friends, gave a quick curtsey and nodded, still clinging mutely to her daughter.

Zoe bowed again and instructed Patu to do likewise. Then she sent him on ahead and they continued through the town.

Interview with Gordon A. Long
1. How did you come up with name of this book?
“Choice” was always going to be there, because the theme of the book is about an existential choice the main character has to make, one which will save her realm from warfare, but could destroy her. The real problem was the name, “Zoysana.” I always wanted to have a main character called Zoe. So I had to find an interesting name that shortened down to Zoe. I toyed with “Zonethrander,” but that sounded too specifically Punjabi, which had nothing to do with the story, so I messed around with it some more. Then I found out that a Hungarian friend of mine called “Sue” is actually named “Zsusanna,” so I pared that down a bit, and presto!

2. Do you read yourself and if so what is your favorite genre?
I usually read Sci-Fi and Fantasy, but I read pretty much anything. I used to read a lot more, before I started writing. I always had a pretty high pressure life, and sometimes when it all got too much for me I would go to the library and take out about five books and sit down and read them all in one weekend.
Now I get the same R&R from writing, so I read less. But then I started reviewing books on my blog, “Renaissance Writer,” so I have to read one book a week, come hell or high water. Now I read whatever people send me, but I prefer Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Paranormal. My wife is a big Detective Mystery fan, so every once in a while she recommends I read one of those.

3. Do you prefer to write in silence or with noise? Why?
When I was a kid I could read a book with a riot going on, and I’d just shut it all out. I used to work, study, or mark papers with the radio or stereo on all the time. But I can’t write with music playing. I think it’s because the music appeals to the emotional part of my brain, and when I’m creating, I need all of that for the task at hand. Other noises don’t bother me.

4. If you could choose one of your books to be made into a movie, which would it be and why?
My “Sword Called Kitten?” books would make great digitally enhanced movies, because the main character is a sword with the soul of a cat, so she is speaking all the time to the other characters, who are normal humans. She also sometimes gives her humans a touch of the tips of her claws if they get out of line, which could be very funny. In the second book of that series, “Cat with Many Claws,” she gets saddled with helping to train a Healer’s Scalpel that has the soul of a puppy, and the “arguments” between the two of them would be great on screen.

5. Do you write one book at a time or do you have several going at a time?
Now, I really am glad you asked that question. When I started writing, there was no such thing as self-publishing. So I just started writing. After 15 years the self-pub revolution came along, and I had 8 books already in the can. Of the Petrellan Saga, for example, I had already written Zoysana’s Choice and the next two sequels. Then I jumped back 400 years in time to write the next three books, which became Books 1, 2, and 3 in the Saga. So at the moment I am finishing and publishing that whole series over the next three or four years.
Meanwhile, I started the World of Change series, which is at Book 5 right now, plus other independent projects. So the answer is that I always have at least three books on the table: one that I’m writing, one that I’m editing and one that I’m promoting.
It’s a good system, because there are always gaps, such as when a book is at the editor, when I just can’t write on that project, and it gives me something else to do.
It also solves writer’s block. If one book isn’t going well, I just switch to another one.
Book 7 of the Petrellan Saga, which will be called “Mother of the King,” is only about a quarter finished, but because it’s going to be the wrap-up of the whole Saga, every once in a while something in one of the earlier books will give me an idea, and I’ll jump ahead and write a chapter.

It’s a busy life.

Yet despite her best intentions, the sizzling attraction between them is seducing Tatum into breaking the one promise she vowed she’d never break. As she grapples with the sensuous power of Blake’s devastating kisses, the past she thought she’d outrun is closing in fast. And time…has just run out.

Blake’s counting on Diamond Lad to pull off the most spectacular win in horse racing at the prestigious Kentucky Derby, but when blustering owner Max McManis yanks his multi-million dollar stallion out of Lockwood—Blake is at his wit’s end. On top of that, the arrival of stunning, enigmatic Tatum O’Connor, has him doubly sucker-punched. Now he has to decide between the family farm he cherishes, and saving the woman he’s come to love.
Once In A Blue Kentucky Moon is the first book in The Harrisons, a series capturing the perfect blend of heart, emotion and steamy romance.
EXCERPT:
The consigner stood abruptly and ran a meaty hand over the horse’s back. As he did so, Blake noticed the colt’s big black eyes tracking his every move. The animal gave an irritable toss of the head and nickered ominously.
“He has real nice withers here,” The man continued. “Nice short back, his top line is real nice. In fact, I’d have to say, this colt’s got near perfect conformation all round. Folks,” he said, looking them both in the eye. “You are not gonna see better angles for racing—on a horse anywhere.”
Stargazer puffed and snorted impatiently, pawed at the ground as the consigner skimmed a hand along his back and moved to the rear of the horse. The girl gave a sharp tug on the reins to settle him.
“Now if you’ll look at the rump here folks, you’ll see where all that power comes from. This horse has a very dynamic hip, there’s a lot of power right here—” The man slapped the horse’s rump and with a strangled whinny, whippet-fast Stargazer shot out a hind leg, catching the man square on the shin.
“Aarghhh!” The consigner bellowed, diving for his throbbing leg with a painful grimace. “You goddamn cantankerous, son of satan!”
Stargazer!” The girl tugged hard again. “Stop it!
“Ah, you better take a step back there,” Blake said to the consigner. “He doesn’t seem to be in the best of moods right now.”
The man’s face paled as he realized he was still well within striking distance. He quickly hopped out of range. “Dang horse forgets his manners sometimes, is all.” He rubbed his leg gingerly and straightened with a grimace. “If you gentlemen will excuse me a few moments, I’m gonna go get some ice on this real quick. I’ll leave you to ah, peruse the animal. And ah—”
Spinning on his heel, he hobbled stiffly toward the barn, waved a puffy hand in the general direction of the white cowgirl hat on the other side of the horse. “The young lady there will answer any questions you may have. Be right back.”
Face contorting, Blake stifled a snort of laughter. Yeah, those kicks hurt like hell, he’d certainly had his share, but the guy worked with horses for crying out loud, couldn’t he read the animal? And as for slapping him on the butt, well that was just plain dumb.
“He wouldn’t be the first thoroughbred in history with a mean streak.” Mike said, breaking into Blake’s thoughts.
Blake caught him biting down on a grin. “Yeah I grant you, or maybe he’s just a great judge of character. You know that guy was right about one thing, though.”
“Oh yeah?”
“He did have a lot of power in that hip.”
Mike let out a loud guffaw, then remembering they still had company, tried unsuccessfully to disguise it with a cough. “Seriously though Blake, you’re not gonna walk away from this fella just because he’s a little high strung, are you?”
“Little high strung?” Blake raised an eyebrow at him. “There’s high strung and there’s ornery as a goddamn mule.”
“Well, alright, but he’s such a beauty.” Mike tried again. “You gotta agree, colts like this don’t come along every day of the week.”
”I know. And the guy was right about the angles. But he’s got a temper like a junkyard dog.” Blake shook his head, as he eyed the cantankerous colt. “I don’t know. I think that stubborn streak could prove too much of a liability. He’s gotta be trainable.”
He crossed to the colt and ran a hand over his silky coat. Two big dark eyes regarded him with a twinkle, seemed to exude a lively intelligence. “What’s eating you boy?” The animal’s ears twitched in response. “Don’t like people? Is that it?” Reaching into his back pocket, Blake produced a carrot and the colt devoured it greedily.
“You were right about him being a beauty,” Blake said, twisting around toward Mike. “He definitely ticks a lot of boxes. But the way things are at the farm right now, I can’t risk it. I just can’t justify the expense on a horse that probably won’t pay his way.”
“I still say you should take some time to think—“
Teeth bared, the colt snapped his head around and tried to nip at Blake’s hand. “Hey!” Blake sprang back, whipping his hand out of the horse’s reach. “No you don’t buddy! Didn’t anybody ever tell you not to bite the hand that feeds you!”
Stargazer!” The girl cursed from the other side of the colt, yanking on his reins. “Will you quit trying to pull my arm off!”
Cheeky bugger had nearly gotten the better of him, Blake chastised himself. He should have known better than to let himself get distracted like that. The girl was keeping a white-knuckle grip on Stargazer’s reins now he noticed, but it was too late. There was no way he was buying this colt. Stargazer had a truckload of attitude and just flat out didn’t like being told what to do.
The ever-present knot in his gut twisted, turned. Damn it. When he’d seen the colt amble out of the barn earlier, he’d really thought this could be the one—the champion racer he desperately needed to save Lockwood Farm.
Instead, he’d just seen his last ditch hope to save his Daddy’s farm go up in smoke.
***
Tension thrummed through Tatum’s veins, as she kept her head down. Her nerves were wound so tight, she felt like she was going to explode. Thank goodness she’d worn her big white hat to work today, because it was turning out to be a life-saver.
Still, despite the nerve-wracking situation she found herself in, a smirk crept onto her face. Stargazer kicking Buzz in the shins had been the funniest thing she’d seen in a long time. It had taken all her self-restraint not to laugh out loud, but she’d made it this far, she had to keep it together a little longer.
She’d had an absolute heart attack when she’d spied Uncle Mike from the barn. She’d immediately told Buzz she wasn’t feeling well, had begged him to let Enrique lead Stargazer out instead. But true to form, Buzz had told her to quit her moaning and get her butt outside pronto. He’d said he had a great prospect and he wasn’t about to lose him on her account.
Now she was standing here with just a horse between her and her Uncle Mike, hoping to goodness he didn’t realize it was her. Luckily for her, he’d seemed so completely besotted with Stargazer—he wasn’t paying the least bit of attention to the girl on the other side of the horse. Otherwise, she might have had some explaining to do.
What the heck was Mike doing out here at the sales yard anyway, she wondered. He wasn’t a horse trader. He was a veterinarian, consulting at whatever farm happened to call him in to come treat an ailing horse. It must have something to do with that guy he was with, she thought. Mike was probably advising him whether Stargazer was a good buy or not.
The guy had been pretty darn hot actually, Tatum mused. Not that she could see him now, but with his hot body and smouldering blue eyes, he’d made quite an impression when she’d spied him from the barn earlier.
He was rugged. A man’s man, she knew the type. Exactly the type she’d vowed to stay the hell away from, from now on in her life. Never again was she going to fall for the good-looking guy with the great body and the over-sized ego to match. They were arrogant as hell and mean to boot. God knew, she could vouch for that first-hand.
But right now, something about the guy was tugging at her consciousness. He was familiar somehow, though she just couldn’t think how. Well, it would come to her later. Right now, she just had to keep her head down and stay out of sight. Whatever the reason Uncle Mike hadn’t spotted her, she planned on keeping it that way. She wasn’t ready to deal with things, yet. Not any of it.

Author Bio:
Hi folks,
I'd like to be able to tell you I was one of those people who told stories from the age of two, wrote them voraciously from age three and a half, and spent my entire life in a library reading any book I could lay my hands on from that point forward. But sadly...that would be a complete fiction. (Ironic, isn't it?)
The fact is, I'm one of those people who could never quite figure out what to do with their lives. I've worked variously in office admin, as a teacher, singer, voice-over artist, colour consultant... If you can think of it, chances are I've probably tried it:)
Fast forward one change of country (Australia to Canada) and two children later, I don't think I found writing so much, as it found me. And I'm sure glad it did, because I can finally say I've found what I'm supposed to do:)
I've loved writing my first contemporary romance series The Harrisons, and I hope you'll enjoy meeting each of the seven Harrison siblings as much as I have.
Happy reading

Those who want to see the end of Jagger’s reign want to take control over the depleting natural resources in order to save the planet and the Jaruian species.

Natalie gets caught up in Jagger’s twisted game of power and control when she’s taken from her sovereign. Against her will, like all women who are caught, Natalie is thrown into the Jaruian sex trade. With her new, unwanted job responsibilities, Natalie takes a stand, willing to die fighting for her life rather than be used. When an opportunity presents itself, is Natalie willing to do whatever it takes to free herself or remain only a pawn?

About Martha Sweeney

Martha Sweney is an Amazon Best-Selling author and her writing has just begun. Martha has many more stories she’s working on that will range between romance, mystery/suspense, science fictions, and perhaps more coloring books.

Martha’s writing career started with the Just Breathe series, then her first adult coloring book, Bookish: Adult Coloring Book, a contributing author for the “Because Beards” anthology to benefit The Movember Foundation, and has a romance, suspense story, Killmore (Nov. 15, 2016) which will be a two book series.

Martha has been creative since she was little, always drawing, coloring or making crafts. When her adult life kicked in, her creative outlet disappeared until she discovered Adobe Creative Suite products. Now, Martha is a self-taught graphic and website designer who had the pleasure of helping her husband, Thomas Sweeney, author of The Harem, with editing and designed all graphic and web materials for the book and its promotions. She lives in sunny California and has recently begun to enjoy reading, unlike in high school or college, which has sparked her new creative avenue of writing.
