EXCERPT:

I love Malika and Harper. They make me happy. They really do. But there’s something about being with them that makes me feel lonely too. I can never really be myself with them. I can’t really be myself with anybody. It’s ingrained in me to lie, to stick to the cover story and blend in no matter what. And I feel guilty about that. Because they think they know me so well. They think because they can finish my sentences they know everything about me. But they only know Reagan MacMillan; the quick-talking, tough girl I created. Sometimes I wonder which parts of my personality are really me and which ones belong to the pretender.

But with Luke, it’s different. There’s nothing forced or strategic about our friendship. He’s gotten to see glimpses of the real Reagan. And that scares the shit out of me. Because I know how quickly it could all be torn away from me. How quickly I could be torn away from him. There’s no such thing as a happy ending for a girl like me.

“Come on, Reagan,” Harper says quietly, glancing over her shoulder to make sure Luke is still out of earshot. “You guys are so cute together. He broke up with Hannah months ago. I don’t know what you’re waiting for. I can just tell by the way he looks at you he—”

“Harper,” I interrupt as her words compress my lungs, making each breath labored and painful. I don’t want to hear this. “He doesn’t look at me like anything. I don’t want to ruin our friendship.”

“You know some things are worth ruining,” Harper replies, reaching out to touch my arm with her fingertips, her nails painted darker than my gray cardigan. “You can’t tell me you haven’t at least thought of starting a relationship with him or maybe—”

“There is no relationship,” I cut her off again, pulling my arm away a little faster than I meant to. I snap new gloves onto my hands, pick up the scalpel, and slice into the frog’s heart. “Next stomach.”

“Next stomach?” Harper repeats, scrunching her forehead.

“Next subject.”

book blurb

Cecelia Merrill was used to being on her own. Lost and lonely, Lia couldn’t wait to graduate and watch her judgmental little town fade behind her. All she had to do was survive three more years of high school, and she was free. She wouldn’t let anything hold her back.

Craig Knightly had almost achieved what no one in his family had before – all he had to do was complete his student-teaching assignment, and in less than a year, he would have a college degree. He was ready to put down roots and start his life. Nothing was going to stand in the way of his dreams.

Sometimes all it takes is a moment for everything to change.

A student and her teacher. A coach and his athlete. An unexpected friendship. Forbidden feelings between an unlikely pair.

Neither is playing a game they can win.

excerpt

“I was wondering how I was scoring.”

“I can’t tell you.” She knew that. I was immediately on edge, wondering what she really wanted. “Out with it, Lee. Whatever it is.”

She had to tip her head back to look up at me. “I need you to score me low enough so I don’t make varsity, just JV.”

“No,” I snapped, narrowing my eyes, not needing to think about what she was saying.

“Listen,” she snapped back, “I’ll perform shitty on some of the stations and throw it myself if I have to, but I don’t want to be bad enough that I screw myself out of a spot on JV.”

“Then don’t. Bring your all to practice, kick ass, and see where you score.”

“You’re going to try to boost me to varsity.” She stated it as if she knew it was fact, as if she could read my mind.

“I’m going to average all of your scores just like I do everyone else.”

“Okay, whatever,” she sassed, doubt clear. “Figure out the teams however you like, but I need you to promise me you’ll put me on JV.”

I watched her closely for a minute. “Why? Is it the practice times? If rides are a problem I can pick you up.”

“I can walk.” She shot down the idea completely.

“Then why?”

“Because I want to play JV.”

The hell she did. No one wanted to play JV, not when they were good enough to play at the next level. “Why?” I ground out.

She crossed her arms over her chest, pushing her breasts a little higher. “Because.”

I swore. I tried to keep my language clean while on school grounds, but she brought out the worst in me. “Lee,” I warned, “you may have forgotten how this works, but I’m a stubborn ass, and I’m not budging. You want something from me, you tell me why you want it.”

Fire filled her eyes. “I don’t want to be on your team.”

I tilted my head, waiting for the rest of the explanation because that was not good enough. She ran her tongue over her bottom lip. Unlike the girl from last fall, this one was not even remotely intimidated by me.

“I don’t think it’s a good idea. You and I have,” she paused, dropping her eyes and struggling to find the right word, “history, and I don’t want that coming back to haunt me.”

“And how would our history haunt you exactly?”

“I don’t want anyone to think I get preferential treatment.”

I laughed loudly. “Preferential treatment? Because I’m your teacher? Or because I was your coach last fall? ’Cause that makes sense,” I sneered.

“You know what I’m talking about.”

“I don’t, actually. Because unless you told people we’re friends outside of school, no one knows.”

“Please, Craig.” I loved it when she said my name. It reminded me of a different time when it would be a gasp on her lips. I was a sadist like that. “Just put me on the JV team.”

I mulled over her words for a minute. “No.”

Done with the conversation, I turned, lifted my duffle over my shoulder and headed for my Chevy. It was all alone in the empty lot. Not even Lia’s wretched ride was there.

“What do you mean ‘no’?” she shrieked. “You can’t say no.”

I didn’t slow down. “I can. I did. No.”

I threw my bag in the bed of my truck and reached for my door, but she stepped in the way to keep me from opening it. “Don’t be difficult. Please?”

I stepped back slightly. “You think I’m being difficult?” I laughed humorlessly. “You’re throwing a temper tantrum like a damn toddler, asking me to break rules for you, but I’m difficult because I won’t?”

Her jaw set and her nostrils flared. “Yes, I’m asking you to break rules for me. For once. There is no reason you can’t do this for me. Except the fact you want to be a miserable prick.” She threw her bag onto the ground in anger.

“If you think me wanting you to play on a team that is actually worth your time and effort instead of being held back is me acting like a miserable prick, then you have another thing coming little girl. The world is filled with men a lot meaner than me. I can’t wait to see how you’re going to handle the guys who really are dicks.”

“This has nothing to do with how well I play!” She pushed both hands into my chest and shoved me back a few steps. “This has everything to do with you!”

“Me?” I hollered back.

“You! You and your pathetic little power trip!” She groaned in frustration, clenching her fists. “Oh, my God, you are so infuriating.”

“How in the hell does this have anything to do with me? There is no power trip. I’m doing my job. As your coach!” I shouted over her. “You’re the one who is irritating as shit!”

“Oh, don’t even!” Her face had turned the same shade as her hair. “Why can’t you just move me to JV? Why do you have to make every single thing so difficult?”

“Because there’s no reason for you to be there! Give me one good fucking reason!”

“Because if I play for you, we’ll be at each other’s throats constantly!”

“Bullshit,” I spat the word. “We’ll be at each other’s throats whether you’re on my team or not. Try again.”

“God, you are something else!” She put her hands on her head, completely frustrated. “Because, if we’re alone, and you know damn well we will be, we won’t pay attention to those stupid ground rules. We’ll end up right back where we were in October! I know it and you know it, whether you want to admit it or not!”

“You don’t know that!”

“I do!” She screeched. “I won’t be able to stop it any more than you can.”

Her eyes widened in shock, as if she couldn’t believe she had actually said the words. She was right. I couldn’t stop it.

The difference was I didn’t want to.

She was absolutely adorable when she was angry with me. I needed to kiss her. I clutched her cheeks, stepping into her, and leaned down, capturing her lips.

She resisted me for a split second. Then, she released the breath she was holding, sighing into my mouth. Her hands clutched my shoulders, pulling me closer, then she draped her arms around me like a vice, holding me there. She lifted her legs, wrapping them around my waist, and my hands went to her ass as I pulled her closer.

I took a step, pushing her back against the door, trapping her between my truck and me. I kissed her until we were both completely breathless and her hands were tugging at my shirt. I almost let her take it off, remembering the feeling of her nails on my skin.

The sound of a truck somewhere in town brought me back to reality. I pressed my forehead onto hers, trying to catch my breath. God, I’d missed her.

TEMPLE OF INDRA SERIES BOOK TOUR by Rachael Stapleton

Temple of Indra's Series
by Rachael Stapleton

rae-72dpi-1500x2000jewel

This Librarian is Just Killing TimeTravel. Sophia Marcil loves her grandmother’s twisted tales almost as much as the sapphire ring passed down to her. Wearing it, however, could be her downfall. After slipping the jewel onto her finger she is pushed from a cliff—landing splat in the middle of 19th Century Monaco, where a killer plot to seize the throne could consume her entire future—past and present. Sophia believes she’s being forced into an eccentric millionaire’s dinner theatre but a hidden diary, a secret passage and a whispered conversation reveal to her that the role of a princess is not all fun and games. With the help of a man from outside the palace walls, Sophia undertakes a spellbinding journey straight out of a Grimm tale. Learning the gem’s secrets and the powerful curse behind it are only the beginning. With time and the constant threat of death hanging over her, she must take a page out of her own history to hunt down someone who isn't killing by the book. Can she do it before she’s checked out for good?
rae-72dpi-1500x2000cFamily Secrets Can Be a Real Curse. Former Librarian turned Time Traveler, Sophia Marcil is looking forward to a shiny new beginning, and that’s just what she gets when the man of her dreams proposes. Unfortunately, the ring Cullen O’Kelley slips on her finger holds a piece of the very sapphire that’s cursed her. Wrenched back to a stately home in 1920, she discovers a hidden chapter in her own family story. In an effort to re-write the past, things get foggy in a London bookshop; long-lost relative’s re-surface, and as a family gathering rapidly goes awry, Sophia ricochets back to the present. Someone close to her is a killer, and this time she’s determined to read between the lines. Her ex-boyfriend seems to be the likely character, but evidence to the contrary soon has her questioning whether she wrote the wrong guy off. With her wedding day fast approaching Sophia needs to figure out if Cullen’s love, spells death? Jewels are a girl’s best friend, unless they’re cursed, then they’re just worth killing for.
rae-72dpi-1500x2000lThe Past Is Never Far BehindIt Also Won’t Stay Buried. The page has turned at last. Sophia Marcil’s nemesis is six feet under and she’s off to return the cursed sapphire to India, so she can settle into the next chapter of her life—a new bookshop and wedded bliss. One problem, her wedding day has come early and the wrong man stands at the altar. The mysterious temple has sent Sophia back into the past, more specifically, into the body of the soon to be murdered bride of Dunlace Castle—a place she was hired to research. Thankfully her detour into the past is brief and she returns to safety in her own time. But how safe is she? Three dead bodies and her missing groom have Sophia wondering if her time travel has changed more than the castle’s structure. To make matters worse an empty grave leads her to believe that her nemesis is alive and forcing her fiancé to time travel. Sophia is determined to dig up the truth but will it mean returning to a place she swore she’d written off? Everyone has their cross to bear and Sophia’s might just live to haunt her.
rae-72dpi-1500x2000wClosing the Book on the PastDoesn’t Mean It Can’t Be Opened. Between The Mysterious Ink Spot, Sophia O’Kelly’s cozy Dublin bookshop, and her role as mother and wife, she is more apt to exchange books and banter these days than blows with a bad guy. But living in the present has its pains; and Sophia can’t help but wonder if her migraines are connected to her fate. Sixteen years ago it was foretold to her that her daughter would become a dark and powerful witch, and stealing Sophia’s ancient spell book might just be the first step in proving the grim prediction true. Looking for answers and relief from the pain, Sophia agrees to a hypnotic regression. Unfortunately for Sophia, time’s up and she finds herself manipulated, betrayed and imprisoned for witchcraft. Meanwhile, back in Ireland, Sophia’s husband and best friend uncover a painting, offer hope that Sophia could be alive. The answers lie in a fifteenth-century castle—all they have to do is navigate time to get there. Of course, they’re not the only ones searching; Sophia’s daughter is determined to tag along, and she’s leading the traitor right to them. It’s been sixteen years since Sophia O’Kelly closed the book on her past but someone wants revenge and they’re eager to open that particular volume of secrets.

Interview with Rachel Stapleton
Thanks for having me.

1. Tell us a little about yourself? Perhaps something not many people know?

I don’t like romantic comedies or women’s fiction. I can count on one hand the number of emotional films/books I’ve enjoyed. That’s why I love cozy mysteries. Give me funny, action adventure or a good murder mystery any day. I can only tolerate romance if there are dead bodies trailing in the wake of their love. Over the years, many people have come to me with ideas for books and/or asked me to write their story but I can’t do it. I don’t like to tap into real emotion. It’s not that I’m out of touch with my emotions, quite the opposite. Writers feel and live what they’re writing and for me there is such a thing as feeling too much. It’s a drain on your health. I personally believe that’s why so many writers/artists turned to alcohol. So, for my own happiness I keep it light and bloody.

2. What made you want to become a writer?

I honestly couldn’t tell you what made me want to become a writer, although it is what I wanted to do, even as a child. What I can say is that writing a story makes me happy, like true smile in your soul happy. When an idea grabs me—there’s no better feeling. The scenes play out in my head like a movie. I’m very visual so I imagine every little detail. I wake up every morning and I feel grateful that after I take my kids to school and get my exercise in, I get to sit down in my recliner with my coffee and my protein bar and create. That’s it. That’s why I keep doing it.

3. What is your favorite part of the book SERIES?

That’s like asking a mother to pick her favorite child. You know, you really love them all equally—at least that’s what you tell people—but there’s something that resonates differently with each one. Also, whatever one hasn’t screamed in your ear that morning, that’s your fave. So, to answer your question, I would say my favorite kid for today is my latest release, TEMPLE OF INDRA’S LIES. Specifically, the scenes that involve Alexandra Cuza a.k.a Saundra—the Witch of Dunlace. She is mistress and advisor to Lord Uilliam McQuillan. She’s a misunderstood character who you get to know even better in book four, and most of her scenes take place in the massive mermaid’s cove below Dunlace Castle. She’s always up to no good and the weather in her scenes is violent and stormy reflecting that. In this book she uses her prophetic sight to plot her revenge against her lover, Lord McQuillan and his family over a perceived wrong that happened in a past life. A situation that will come full circle with Sophia’s own story in book four. Releasing soon.

4. What is the most amusing thing that has ever happened to you?
That’s between me and my probation officer. Wink Wink. Just kidding but I’m still not telling. Actually I will share the one thing that always amuses me and that’s playing board games with my family. My Dad cracks me up. He never follows the rules and he usually messes up his answer and it’s always hysterical. All I have to do is think of those memories and I’m in stitches. I’m very grateful for every minute I get with my parents and my siblings but playing board games with them takes the cake.

5.  Anything you would like to say to your readers and fans? Yes, thank you for your support. I love hearing from fans and reading reviews. I’d also like to say that even if you have read my first two books—the original Temple of Indra books—please pick up the latest revised versions, Jewel and Curse. I realize people don’t want to pay for the same book with a different cover but that is not the case. These books are very different. They have a lot more content and they are written in a new style that is seamless to books three and four. I’ve done everything I can to make them as cost effective as possible. I’ve even included them in the Kindle Unlimited program so that they are free to anyone who belongs. Please check them out, and let me know what you think. Or you could even win a copy.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
“Why don’t I stop you right there.” Cassie placed a cautionary finger on Griffin’s lips. “Are you trying to tell me you love me?”
“Yes, thank you!” He beamed with obvious relief. “You’ve hit upon the very conversational precipice I was inching towards.”
Cassie laughed. “That’s not news. I care about you too.”
“You do?” He searched her face eagerly.
“Absolutely.” She gave his hands a reassuring squeeze. “Everybody at the Arkana matters to me—Faye and Maddie and Zach and Hannah and maybe even Erik, a little. But you most of all.”
Griffin sighed. “No, love. You don’t understand.”
She blinked at his choice of words.
“What I’m trying to say is that I’m in—”
“Hey, stop dragging your feet!” Maddie’s voice bellowed from the porch. “We’re all waiting for you!” She gave the door several thumps with her fist for emphasis.
“On our way,” the Pythia called out. Turning to Griffin, she said, “Hold onto that thought, whatever it is. We’ll have plenty of time to talk when we get back home.”
“Right! Brilliant! All the time in the world to get our relationship sorted out,” the Scrivener remarked bleakly as he followed her to the waiting helicopter. “Assuming this isn’t our last day on earth.”
As her friends and allies fall one-by-one into Goblin’s traps, the Queen’s fate seems inevitable. With no one left to fight, will Ba’al’s friends, a bunch of over-the-hill incompetent gods, be enough to stop Goblin from turning the world into hell?
