But when her best friend is gunned down in front of her by a drug-addled patient, Kate turns back to her small town roots, looking for stability and a place to belong.
Logan McAllister has worked his entire adult life to make the people of Madelia see him as more than the kid from the wrong side of the train tracks. He's built a business with his own two hands, revitalizing the historic landmark homes in town to their former glories. He grew up with parents so completely infatuated with each other, he can't imagine wanting to jump into the suffocating arms of love himself. But when his high school crush Kate comes back to town, he can't help but fan the fires and reignite their old flame.
But not everyone is happy about her return . . .
When Kate's clinic is vandalized, the two set aside the differences stemming from their pasts and set out to find and stop the vandal. As they work to solve one problem, their undeniable feelings for one another present another problem that's even more dangerous-at least for her heart.
Kate can handle the crazy politics. What she can't handle is smart, sexy, reformed bad boy Logan, who keeps showing up on her doorstep, determined to kiss the living daylights out of her.
Logan was wrong for her when she was eighteen, is he even more wrong for her now?
Excerpt # 2
“I’m so damn sorry, Katie,” he murmured in her ear. Kate had forgotten how sweet the man could be, how gentle and loving and…tender was the word she was looking for. Even if she’d only experienced it for a fleeting moment as a teenager, the memory had held a special spot in her heart all these years later.
It had been late springtime their senior year, close enough to graduation that they’d all gotten a little more lax with their studies. All of them except Kate of course, who had been nominated valedictorian of their class and felt the brutal pressure that went with giving a speech in front of hundreds of people.
One night, a group of her classmates had congregated at the river and built a large bonfire. Kate had seen the fire go up from her bedroom window, but had tried to ignore it in favor of her notebook and pen.
A soft but insistent knock at the door brought her downstairs. She didn’t want her mother to wake up, knowing there wasn’t enough tequila left in the house to get her back to sleep and knowing she’d already pressed her luck earlier in the evening, stealing a bottle from the grocery store to make the evening more tolerable. Kate tiptoed to the door and opened it, surprised to see Logan standing there.
He invited her to the bonfire, and wouldn’t take no for an answer. And when they’d gotten to the party, he hadn’t left her there to explore more interesting company. He’d stayed with her, danced with her, and at the end of the night, under the darkness of the new moon and a sky lit up in glittering stars, he’d been her very first kiss.
That one fairy-tale night hadn’t been enough to fuel anything real, not when family dramatics and peer pressures were doing everything possible to keep them apart. Kate hadn’t had the guts back then to ignore the people in her life who told her Logan McAllister was a worthless teenage rebel. She’d believed the old nosey housewives in town who looked down on him and his family, and she’d squashed down whatever feelings that night might have created within her.
For his part, Logan played off her indifference with indifference of his own, avoiding any kind of social situation where the two of them might be alone together.
High school graduation came, and with it Kate took her bus ticket and got the hell out of Madelia, never once looking back except in the middle of the night, when the sky lit up with glittering bright stars and she thought back on that one magical kiss.
And now, standing in her little loft apartment, Logan’s big strong arms wrapped around her while she cried about the loss of her friend, Kate felt like no time at all had elapsed between the last time he had held her and now.
