excerpt

If Tomorrow Comes, Part 1:

“The hell with it,” I said as I screwed up my courage and pulled the door abruptly open.

The music immediately rushed to my ears as I stepped in and shut the door gently behind me. The lead guitarist’s fingers flew over the neck of his electric guitar, sending a thrill through me as the music penetrated my soul. Beside him, the bass and rhythm guitar players kept time with the beat of the drummer, as if it were no effort. They were good. Really good.

The drummer looked up. Eyeing me from across the room, he immediately stopped. “May I help you?”

The others stopped and looked up. It was only natural that they didn’t know me.

“It’s nice to meet you,” I said, setting my guitar case onto a nearby table. I pulled out my guitar and slid the strap across my shoulders. Then, I picked up a pick.

“So, you’re part of the band, too?” the lead guitarist asked, laughing without humor. “Craig told me that it would just be us.” He ran his fingers through his shoulder-length blond streaked hair and shook his head. The rhythm guitarist rolled his eyes at the blond, as if used to his objections.

I suppressed a smile and let my fingers fly down the neck of my plugged in acoustic guitar.

The bass player nodded his approval. “Well, you’ve got to hand it to her. She’s good.”

The rhythm guitarist suppressed a smile.

The blond laughed as he turned back to me. “Do you sing, too?”

I nodded, but didn’t say a word as my fingers flew over my guitar. But this time, I found a rhythm. I looked over at the drummer, and he bit his lower lip, suppressing a grin, having recognized me. I gave him a wink as I shook my head slightly, and then looked back at the lead guitarist.

“So, let’s see what you got.”

He laughed so hard that he dabbed at the tears in his eyes. “Really?” he asked in disbelief, gesturing down the length of my guitar.

I let my fingers run up the neck of my guitar as it screamed in answer.

“Okay,” he said, nodding his head as his fingers flew over the neck of his guitar and came abruptly to a stop. “Let’s see what you’ve got, little girl.”

I raised an eyebrow, taking him in. Behind him, the brunette drummer bit his lip and lowered his head as he shook his head, as if knowing that the blond would soon regret his actions and comments. He didn’t say a word.

One corner of my lips curled into a sly smile. Then, I turned back to Blondie. “You first.”

He nodded his gratitude, and the others laid out as Blondie’s fingers flew over the neck of his guitar and then down to the base. A moment later, his rift came to an end as a self-satisfied smirk spread across his face.

“Impressive!” I said, and, without missing a beat, immediately launched into an impressive rift of my own. When my rift came to an end, the other musicians clapped loudly as they whooped and hollered.

The rhythm guitar player laughed as he shook his head and smoothed back long strands of light brown hair into his ponytail. “I think she smoked you, man,” he said with a pronounced Irish brogue.

Blondie’s lips formed a straight line. And, without saying another word, he launched into another rift, this time mixing in a little rhythm and blues in with his lead line. A moment later, his rift came to an end. He folded his arms across his chest. “Now, beat that.”

I lifted my eyebrows. “Well, it’ll be hard. That’s for sure,” I said, matter of fact, as I set down my acoustic. “Mind if I borrow your guitar?”

He handed it to me with a self-satisfied smirk. “Go for it.”

I played around a bit with his electric guitar, getting a feel for it first. Although I preferred playing my own guitar, there are certain things that you can only do on an electric guitar. “As I said, that’ll be hard to beat, but here it goes.” I launched into an intricate rift, including some old-school rock, followed by jazz, and then launched into some contemporary rock. Then, I played the guitar behind the back of my head. After a few bars, I brought the guitar down in front of me and played a contemporary country rift and ended with a high-pitched note at the base of the neck. I jumped into the air and landed, bringing our battle to a close.

Silence filled the air. When I looked around, their mouths were open as I handed his guitar back to him.

“It’s a great guitar, but you need a new G-string. Probably because the key nozzle is a bit loose. You can have that tightened up and it’ll save you from using so many strings. Also, the nut bar at the end needs tightening, too. But, all in all, I like it.” When I handed it back to Blondie, his mouth was still open.

A slow clap came from behind me. Craig had entered the warehouse, dressed in a leather suit coat and black leather pants, instead of his usual business attire. He still wore his signature white dress shirt, but he looked good with it unbuttoned at the neck. I turned away, trying not to notice.

“Alyssa, that was truly impressive,” he said after he stopped clapping.

If Tomorrow Never Comes, Part 2:

“Just as the song came to an end, it felt as if eyes were watching me. I looked over Curt’s shoulder and someone who looked like Logan was watching me from across the room, bringing me back to reality.

“Oh my God!” I said as I backed quickly away from Curt. “I’m sorry, but I can’t do this!”

A crease formed between Curt’s eyes. “What? Dance?”

I bit my lower lip. “I’m sorry, but I have to go.” I started backing away toward the stage. “It was nice to meet you.”

“May I have your number?” he asked, holding out his hand as he watched me hurry away.

Casey was still going strong on the stage and the crowd was in the palm of her hands.

I bit my lower lip and turned to one of the four bodyguards standing in the wings as tears welled up in my eyes. “I hate to do this, but can you make sure that Casey gets back to our hotel safely? Something has come up and I have to go.”

“Sure,” the leader said. “No problem at all. We’ll make sure that she gets back safely.”

“Thank you,” I said as I pulled my clutch under my arm. “Please apologize to her for me and tell her that I’ll see her back at the hotel.”

He nodded. “I will.” He took a step closer and looked into my eyes. “Is everything okay, miss?”

I nodded, suddenly feeling the need to escape, to run. “Yes, I’m fine, but I must go.”

Without another word, I hurried down the steps and out the side emergency door, trying to wrap my head around what had just happened as tears streamed down my cheeks. It couldn’t have been Logan, could it? This guy was a dead ringer for him, but a little older, more attractive—if that was possible—mature. My heels clicked against the sidewalk when I realized that there was another set of footsteps behind me.

“Alyssa, wait!”

Her mother has marriage plans for her and takes Alex to Italy to keep them apart. He goes to Oxford University where he achieves great success in cricket and rugby football. For the next seven years their love has to overcome many conflicts and is sorely tested by a tragic event and her Catholicism. In 1961 now working in San Francisco and believing Alex lost to him forever, Sandy falls in love and marries Kate but Alex, now finally free of her marriage, returns to him plunging his life into chaos. Will he be able to bring an end to this never ending game?

Excerpt

She woke me up in the morning at eight saying their group was departing at ten and I should leave before anyone saw me. The Italians knew she was married to Paolo but in true Italian style would never say anything about last night, but it was probably best not to be seen together in the morning. I was getting dressed when she picked up my jacket to hand it to me and she noticed there was something heavy in the pocket.

“She said. “Oh there’s something here in the pocket.”

I had totally forgotten about it but her hand went in and brought out Eva’s watch.

She looked at me strangely. “It’s a ladies watch. Why do you have a ladies watch in your pocket?”

I tried to look nonchalant. “Oh, it’s Eva’s. She gave it to me when Göran gave her a new watch as a birthday present. I’ll give it back to her in the office on Monday.”

“But why did she give it to you?”

I stammered a little. “Well… well, I was sitting next to her when she took it off.”

I saw the disbelief growing in her face and I had a flash back to the Darlene’s gold chain incident in Naples.

“Don’t lie to me Sandy. She gave it to you because you were going to take her home and sleep with her, weren’t you?”

I shook my head. “No, no.”

“You’re lying Sandy. You were going to have her last night until I came along. How inconvenient for you, but then you had me instead. Is she better than me Sandy? How long have you been sleeping with her?”

“Alex, I did not lie to you. I’ve never had sex with her.”

She was completely furious now. “Just a month ago you promised me you would wait for me and marry me when I am free. Is that a lie too?”

“Alex please calm down.”

In answer she hurled Eva’s watch at my face, hitting me on the forehead. I caught it as it bounced off me.

This was too much and I lost my temper. “Alex I did not lie to you but my God how long do you expect me to wait for you? How long will you remain married to Paolo and expect me to stay celibate while wait for you to pop up occasionally? You tell me you don’t sleep with him and I believe you, but when I told you I have never slept with Eva you don’t believe me. If you don’t trust me then maybe we should forget the whole thing. It’s a crazy situation anyway.”

I had gone too far and instantly regretted it.

She burst into a torrent of tears. I went to her but she pushed me away and said “just go”. I put on my jacket, slipped the watch into my pocket and walked out. I could feel blood trickling down my nose and put my handkerchief over the cut in my forehead.

I stayed in my hotel room and drowsed through all of Sunday. I went over the whole scenario, over and over again. I wished I could take it all back. I shouldn’t have reacted angrily to her charges. I would have slept with Eva so she was partially right but I had not lied when I said I had never slept with her. But poor Alex had all the stress of a loveless marriage and her secret. I knew she loved me and I could understand her being upset when she saw me dancing romantically with another woman. But where does that leave us now? By dinner time I had decided that I should wait for her to contact me again. She knew I had another year at Oxford. Despite everything I was still in love with her.

On Monday morning I went straight to Göran’s office. He looked up smiling at me as I walked in. Then he saw the small elastoplast on my forehead.

“Oh no Sandy, please don’t tell me she hit you.”

I pulled Eva’s watch out of my pocket and placed it on his desk.

“She found it in my pocket and threw it at me.”

He felt its weight. “My God Sandy, what a woman. Adrian had told me about her and she was exactly as he described her. Adrian and Pete call her the movie star. Did you know that? What a beauty and she’s violent too. What a combination. You are a lucky man.”

“Well I’m not so lucky now. I think she’s finished with me this time.”

Göran looked upset. “Oh no and it’s entirely my fault because I set you up with Eva.”

I told him it was not his fault and that our relationship was very complicated but I was sure she would come back. I wasn’t really sure but I didn’t want Göran feeling guilty about it.

Except for this one incident I had a wonderful summer in Stockholm. I’d met Mr. Axel Persson, Göran’s father, and he seemed interested in me. Perhaps that would lead to other opportunities. Had cricket opened another door?

Synopsis

From the gender-bending cabarets of Weimar Berlin to the tyrannical movie studios of Los Angeles, this sweeping story of passion, glamour, art, and war is a lush, dramatic novel of one of the most alluring legends of Hollywood’s golden age: Marlene Dietrich.
Raised in genteel poverty after the First World War, Maria Magdalena Dietrich dreams of a life on the stage. When her budding career as a violinist is cut short, she vows to become an actress, trading her family’s proper, middle-class society for the free-spirited, louche world of Berlin’s cabarets and drag balls. With her sultry beauty, smoky voice, and androgynous tailored suits, Marlene performs to packed houses and conducts a series of stormy love affairs that push the boundaries of social convention until she finds overnight success in the scandalous movie The Blue Angel.

For Marlene, neither fame nor marriage and motherhood can cure her wanderlust. As Hitler rises to power, she sets sail for America to become a rival to MGM’s queen, Greta Garbo. As one of Hollywood’s top leading ladies, she stars with such legends as Gary Cooper, John Wayne, and Cary Grant. Desperate for her return, Hitler tries to lure her with dazzling promises. Defiant in her stance against the Nazis, Marlene chooses instead to become an American citizen, and after her new nation is forced into World War II, she tours with the USO, performing for Allied troops in Europe and Africa. But one day, she must return to Germany, where she will discover a heartbreaking secret amidst the war’s devastation that transformed her homeland and the family she loved.

An enthralling account of this extraordinary legend, MARLENE reveals the inner life of a woman of grit and ambition who defied convention, seduced the world, and forged her own path.

“Skillfully evokes the cross-dressing, sexually fluid atmosphere of the seedy nightclubs that helped Marlene define her unique appeal.
Well-detailed and truly moving; an ambitious account of the German-American star. ” —Kirkus Reviews

“Full of the sizzle and decadence of Weimar Berlin, and the scandal and soirees of Hollywood’s golden era, this is a gloriously entertaining read.
CW Gortner’s Marlene is utterly beguiling, the kind of woman who only comes along once in a century. Reader, you can’t take your eyes off her!” —Beatriz Williams, New York Times bestselling author

"From the ribald cabarets of Weimer-era Berlin to the glamour of golden-era Hollywood, beguilingly androgynous and fiercely passionate Marlene Dietrich . . . fairly leaps off every page." —Booklist, starred review

Excerpt 5 – The old City
Brandon held onto the rail and poked his head out of the back of the truck. Opposite, the Graywolf security liaison officer had planted himself as flat against the sides of the carrier as possible, all the while keeping his head turned away from the scenery that scrolled behind them.
The reluctant junior officer had feebly insisted on being addressed as Mr Knott when they first clambered into the transport at the checkpoint. He had already made it known several times throughout the journey that the motion of the rickety vehicle over the bumpy roads was not agreeing with him on both a physical and emotional level. The thought that the hurtling metal tomb was being steered by a mere human was not helping either.
‘Look at it,’ Brandon said to the wind as the derelict suburban corridors flashed by his periphery.
‘I’m okay as I am, thank you.’
Mr Knott held on a little tighter and continued studying the wooden panelled floor for potential splinter threats should he fall.
Brandon watched on as a rather nice–looking, art-deco town house with a miraculously unbroken stained glass window with a sunset scene flashed by.
‘Why do they prefer to squat in the centre while these houses just sit here rotting?’
‘They’re not allowed,’ said Sharma. She was an escort from the security detail and stood at the rear of the container with her feet wide apart, cradling her gun like a chihuahua.
‘These streets don’t belong to them no more, and anyway, the water here’s bad and they’re all off the grid. No power, no heat, no water. Hardly prime real estate, huh?’
‘Seems a waste,’ said Mr Knott, allowing himself a quick shaky peak out of the back.
‘Well, what would you prefer?’ Sharma laughed back. ‘A big, bloody electric fence or something? These streets lead right to your doorstep, one way or another. They’re a buffer so you can be all safe and happy working and shopping for your toasters and chinos.’
Mr Knott detected more than a hint of pious sympathiser coming from the tough lady with her pet pistol.
‘They chose to opt out. They got the old Cities. That was the deal.’
‘Yeah,’ she sneered. ‘They chose it.’
