Not Quite a Scot

In USA Today bestselling author Janice Maynard’s sweet and sexy series, three childhood friends with a shared passion for the Outlander novels and TV show decide to travel to Scotland looking for adventure—and their very own Highland heroes…

McKenzie Taylor is high maintenance when it comes to fashion, but when it comes to travel, the socialite prefers privacy to parties, and her own space to hotels. After she and her friends arrive in Scotland and split up to pursue their own adventures, she rents a small cottage on the Isle of Skye. On day two, she crashes her rental car. But a hero emerges from the mist to rescue her. He’s handsome, earthy, funny, and before long is making her feel desirable, not mention desirous. There’s just one problem: McKenzie’s Highland dreamboat is a motorcycle riding American.

Finley Craig knows his cute new tourist friend is stubbornly set on falling for a Scotsman. But he’s just as set on her falling for him. So he plans to give her a taste of what she thinks she wants. Because Finley suspects McKenzie isn’t as shallow as she appears. And in the process of surrounding her with his hand-picked suitors, she may just decide that American-made is best—especially when she and Finley are rained in together over one long, delicious, and very adventurous weekend…

Perfect Paige

Fleeing to Spinning Hills, her grandmother’s hometown, Paige is determined reclaim her title as the mom with the most. That becomes much harder when her husband files for divorce . . . and she learns he’s a lying cheater. Being the perfect mom now means she has to save her ex-husband from himself. But when the agent in charge of the investigation—the man who witnessed her total humiliation—moves in next door, Paige is surprised to find herself drawn to the Fed with the suspicious frown and surprisingly sexy smile . . .

After Alex Hooke’s tough-as-nails childhood, Paige’s way of life seems shallow—at least until he gets to know her. With help from Paige’s nosy family, and his own curious relatives, Alex may still get his man—but what he really wants is the woman who introduced him to love.

Excerpt One:

Not Quite a Scot

The man was only stating the obvious. He could have said it with a bit more sympathy. The taciturn, grumpy biker hadn’t even bothered to ask my name. Perhaps he thought there was no need, since he wouldn’t be hanging around.

“Forgive me for asking,” I said, my tone syrupy sweet. “Do you have a suggestion for what I might do? I’m tired and hungry and disappointed and all out of answers.” I hadn’t meant to be quite so honest. The words tumbled out uncensored.

Perhaps my unwitting vulnerability tapped into some latent chivalry on Finley’s part. For the first time, his posture relaxed. “I do. My house is large. It’s near the harbor, so you can walk most places. I’m listed in the B&B registry, though to be honest, I haven’t said yes to any guests for a long time. Playing host is a lot of trouble. Still, ye’re welcome to stay with
me until you can make arrangements to have this place cleaned.”

“Stay with you?” I parroted the words, my heart beating rapidly. Finley might not be the Loch Ness monster, but he was definitely an unknown quantity.

When I hesitated, he rubbed two fingers in the center of his forehead as if he had a headache. “I’m an upstanding citizen, more or less. As soon as we get back to town, you can look up the website. If you want to call the bloke who owns the seafood place down by the wharf, he’ll vouch for me.”

“I was there this evening. I have the phone number on the receipt, but I haven’t been able to get a decent cell phone signal.”

Finley shrugged. “You’ve found it,” he said. His quick grin startled me.

“Found what?”

“The proverbial rock and the hard place.”

He was a hundred percent correct. No woman in her right mind would try to spend a night alone in this grimy, unprepossessing dwelling. But most women also wouldn’t agree to stay with a man they’d just met. With no cell service, my only choices were to walk back to town or take a chance on Finley Craig.

Excerpt One:

Scattered Ashes

“What’s happened out there?” I asked. “There’s so much chaos.” The woman did an eye-roll. “Some war protesters. They set fire to a garbage can or something around the corner.”

“Thanks.”

As I ran across the street to avoid the smoky air, I saw a slight movement, like the fluttering of a giant bird’s wing, in the window alcove of my favorite coffee shop.

I stopped. It wasn’t a bird. There was a guy sitting in my usual spot, flipping rapidly through the pages of a book.

The guy in the window seemed completely unaffected by everything going on outside. He was nineteen, twenty at the most, with hurricane-colored eyes, the most incredible I had ever seen. His knife-like cheekbone ridges were even more distinct.

He was a stranger to me, yet I couldn’t stop staring at him. I stood paralyzed on the sidewalk. The crossing signal flickered, and I couldn’t persuade my feet to move.

He was reading a book with a familiar-looking burgundy cover but must have sensed someone staring and looked up. Saying that our gazes met was an understatement. In one incredible, heart-stopping second, he seemed to commit to memory every aspect of my face. His abundantly large eyes, too wide-set, seemed out of place in his sharp, tawny-colored features.

The sidewalk activity seemed to dull into the background as we stared at each other. Without a smile or any other expression, he returned to his book, as if the exchange had taken place only in my mind.

I felt the ridiculous desire to knock on the window to get his attention. I wanted to see the color of those eyes again.
This was insane. Snapping to my senses, I crossed 45th Street and headed to my car, not daring to look back at the coffee shop. . . .

EXCERPT:

HELENA

My cheeks warm with embarrassment at the people waiting behind me. A female employee helps me unclasp the diamond bracelet and matching necklace. The crown though is impossible to get out of my princess ’do.

“Can I wear it through the security portal?” I ask, broken shoes in one hand.

“No, I’m sorry. It will buzz,” the security person explains. “The portal is created to alert us to most metals besides gold and silver.”

I can’t tell him I wear gold. Real, irreplaceable, century-old heirlooms. He wouldn’t believe me anyway. “If it’s okay with you, I’d like to try.”

He lifts his arms in subtle agreement, a have-it-your-way, and I enter the booth, walk out without incident. Employees from two checkpoints stare at me while I pick my stuff off the band. I shake my head, slowly at first, but then I have nothing to say, no witty comeback, and my flight instinct kicks in. I get up on my toes so I don’t stumble in the too-long skirt and stride as slowly as I can into the transit hall.

I need to not stress the hell out. Just, I wish someone was with me to talk me down. I could call Elfriede. I don’t have my phone. I need a new phone. God, how pathetic am I?

Once I’m sure security isn’t following, I haul butt down the corridor. Tiles are cold under bare feet, it turns out. I’d step into my shoes again, but one of them is broken. Would people stare less if I limped and my heels creak-clacked against the floor?

A high-end fashion store beams in the distance. “We’ll help you blend in. Hurry, hurry,” it calls. I run. Benches are in the way. I’m getting clumsy. I’m panicking. Suddenly, a potted palm tree appears out of nowhere, half-blocking my view of the Promised Land, and my torso doubles around it as I slam to the ground.

I let out an ungraceful oomph. And realize I’m not on the ground after all. No, there’s an arm around me, and miraculously I’m on my feet, wobbly but sort of erect.

“You all right?” an American accent asks.

“I was going to Cloe’s over there,” I explain in German, pointing feebly and not feeling as regal as I’ve been taught. Dark eyebrows contract from within a tanned face above me.

“Sorry?” His arm is still strong around me, really freaking strong, and somehow I’ve got a death grip around it while trying to pry him off.

I translate the same stupid sentence to English. “I was going to Cloe’s. It’s over there.”

His brows are perfectly thick or thin and their arcs are so perfectly perfect they look like they’ve been combed, but then the furrow between them smoothens and I discover his eyes.

Oh.

Book Description:

Independent and dedicatedly single, Rogue Bruce enjoys running Castle Baillie with her Aunt Baillie from America. They specialize in romantic Elizabethan-themed weddings, complete with resident ghost, Lord Kai (nothing like a haunted castle to set the mood for love). But love is something Rogue is not the least bit interested in. Content with her work and stable of horses, no man is necessary for her happiness.

Matchmaking is in the air, though, focusing on Bruce MacKenzie, a Thor in plaid and jeans from town, and Jonathan Olson, a snobbish Rhett Butler type. With two men after her heart (she’d thought safely locked away), Rogue is torn with confusion. Murder and a psychic yank the soundtrack of Rogue’s life from romantic to scary, while she has choices to make in this sizzling triangle.

Amazon     BN     Paperback
Excerpt:

Movement out of
the corner of her eye caught her attention. Rogue paused her step and watched
Jonathan stride down the east stairs, regal in motion, dressed all in black,
drawing attention to his tanned face and striking beard. He’d released his
hair, the wild, dark waves now decorating his shoulders and a few strands in
front of his face. Rogue’s heart skipped a beat as she watched a less trimmed
Rhett Butler of the twenty-first century hold court with his phone against his
ear.
He caught her
looking and spoke a bit louder. “Let me call you back,” he said before shoving
the phone in his pocket. “Ah, princess, indeed, you waited for me. I am truly
touched at your purity of service.” He pressed a manicured hand to his heart.
Rogue stiffened
as her body betrayed her with a rising warmth. “I dinna realize you were not
already at tea, Mr. Olson.” Rogue denied herself the delicious feel of his
stare by looking away first from the brooding face now inches away from her
own.
“Only
fashionably late, my dear, but first a more pressing issue took my attention.
Business may beckon me twenty-four/seven, but your voice is like a siren’s song
to my heart.”
“Your arrogance
precedes your charm, sir.” She refused to step back and give ground, yet she
could smell a citrus scent, feeling the heat from his body this close.
His lips
tightened as his eyes flashed. Jonathan moved slowly, deliberately, as he
circled around her, appraising her dress. “Excellent,” he whispered. He stopped
a degree to the right of where he started, forcing her to turn her head to face
him.
Rogue made fists
with her hands, trying to control an unnatural response to touch him, the air
surrounding her, thick with testosterone. “What?” The question came out stiff,
foreign.

“You.” His warm
breath caressed her cheek, making her blink. She waited for him to continue.
Nothing.

EXCERPT:

Brandon nuzzled her ear. “It’s just you and me, baby.”

She pushed him away as she tried to think. Oh, God. If only she hadn’t had all those drinks. Her muzzy state made her clumsy and off-kilter. She meant no, but Brandon wasn’t taking no for an answer. Though she’d slapped away his hand, he kept pushing.

He tickled up her side as she tried to squirm away. “Bet I can change your mind…”

God, she was ticklish there. She couldn’t help laughing, even though she was pissed he wouldn’t take her seriously. “Don’t…no, stop it. I mean it, Brandon. Stop…”

A deep voice cut through her weak giggles and Brandon’s whispered teasing. “You got a problem with your hearing? She said stop.”

They both froze. Alyx couldn’t make out the man’s face in the darkness, but she knew the voice.

Cris.

When he stepped into the light, Alyx stiffened even as her chest flooded with relief. Grateful as she was that someone had intervened, why did he have to be that someone?

He gazed at them stony-faced. His eyes zeroed in on Brandon’s hand on her waist. She felt Brandon’s hand tighten, then drop away as he glared back at Cris. “What do you want?”

“I want you to leave her alone.” He nodded at Alyx.

“Why don’t you just mind your own business?”

Cris ignored him, focusing on Alyx. “Do you want this assclown touching you?”

“Hey!” Clenching his fists, Brandon took a step toward Cris.

Alyx spoke quickly. “I just want to go home.” Though pissed off at Brandon, she didn’t want to see him and Cris get into it.

The air quivered with nervous energy as the two guys eyed each other. Brandon’s jaw was set as though he wanted to lay into Cris, and Cris looked as though he’d like nothing better than to bust Brandon in his preppy, pretty-boy face.

Another voice broke the tension. “Everything cool over here?”

A man stepped out of the darkness and stood beside Cris. Alyx recognized him from inside the bar, the guy who’d been sitting with Cris. Tall and broad shouldered, he was the kind of guy you’d want watching your back when trouble came calling.

“Yeah.” Cris’s even tone belied the tenseness in his body. “It’s all good, man.” He glanced at Alyx. “Where’s your car? I’ll drive you home. You’re in no shape to get behind the wheel.” Then he turned to the big guy, his friend. “Rick, can you follow us so I can get a lift back here to my ride?”

She tottered on her three-inch heels while Brandon sneered. “Well, I uh…my car’s not here. I mean, I came with a friend…but she left without me.” God, did she sound pathetic or what?

Brandon’s nasty laughter rang out behind them as his climbed into his car. “Good luck getting home, Alyx.” He gave the door a slam, then peeled out of the lot, gunning the motor as a farewell fuck-you.

Total silence reverberated before Cris spoke again. “You got some real nice friends.”

He didn’t even try to hide his contempt, obviously convinced she was stupid and irresponsible. Maybe he was right.

“Well, um, I could call a cab.” She unsnapped her tiny purse and wanted to cry when all she found was a compact, a tube of lipstick, and a couple of crumpled dollar bills.

Oh, crap. Not even enough to take the bus, if buses ran this late. What to do? Her brain scrabbled frantically to come up with an answer. “I could call my sister to come get me.” Right, ask her for a favor after you ditched her party. But no matter how pissed Morgan might be, she wouldn’t leave Alyx stranded. Nor would she tattle to their parents.

She felt both men’s gazes on her, the big guy’s soft with sympathy, Cris’s hard and judgmental. She felt every bit the spoiled little airhead they imagined her to be.

The big dude spoke up. “Well, I could—”

“No,” Cris said. “I got this, Rick. Come on, Alyx. I’ll take you home.”

Virtual Book Blast Tour for The Woven Ring by M. D. Presley

THE WOVEN RING
by M. D. Presley
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

A fantasy reimagining of the American Civil War that pits muskets against magic, massive war machines against mind readers, and glass sabers against soldiers in psychic exoskeletons.

In exile since the civil war, former spy and turncoat Marta Childress wants to quietly live out her remaining days in the West. But then her manipulative brother arrives with one final mission: Transport the daughter of a hated inventor deep into the East. Forced to decide between safely delivering the girl and assassinating the inventor, Marta is torn between ensuring peace or sparking a second civil war.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Three:
The man waiting for her was entirely nondescript, his suit a few years old, eyes and hair a burnished brown that matched his well-trimmed mustache. He would have blended in with any crowd, just another anonymous face, but the crook in his nose gave Carmichael away. It had been two years since Marta last beheld her brother, but she recognized him instantly despite his disguise.
Her anger immediately roiled to a boil, burning away the effects of the alcohol as the perfect clarity of rage roared within her. Her fourth Breath also flared to life, begging to be released. Straightaway, Armor plans filled her head: a club to stave his skull in, claws to tear out his throat, or even the serpentine tongue that had shattered his nose all those years ago. Some part of Marta’s mind clinically noted there would be a certain symmetry to that act as her Breath again implored her to be released to wreak havoc.
The Blessed Breath remained in her chest though, Marta incapable of releasing it now. Carmichael had seen to that when last they met.
Are you going to continue to gawp like a provincial on her first trip to town or can we conduct our business inside?”
His voice was familiar, always soft, but demanding attention. Yet there was something new to it, a further depth to his indifference Marta had not encountered before as she stepped aside to allow him entrance. If she did not acquiesce willingly, he would be forced to force her.
