BOOK TOUR: Dreaming Sophia by Melissa Muldoon

Book Description:

Dreaming Sophia is a magical look into Italy, language, art, and culture. It is a story about turning dreams into reality and learning to walk the fine line between fact and fantasy. When tragedy strikes, Sophia finds herself alone in the world, without direction and fearful of loving again. With only her vivid imagination to guide her, she begins a journey that will take her from the vineyards in Sonoma, California to a grad school in Philadelphia and, eventually, to Italy: Florence, Lucca, Rome, Verona, Venice, and Val d’Orcia.

Through dreamlike encounters, Sophia meets Italian personalities—princes, poets, duchesses, artists, and film stars— who give her advice to help put her life back together. Following a path that takes her from grief to joy, she discovers the source of her creativity and learns to love again, turning her dreams into reality.

Author's Bio:

Melissa Muldoon is the Studentessa Matta-the crazy linguist! In Italian, "matta" means "crazy" or "impassioned". Melissa has a B.A. in fine arts, art history and European history from Knox College, a liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, as well as a master's degree in art history from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. She has also studied painting and art history in Florence.

Melissa promotes the study of Italian language and culture through her dual-language blog, Studentessa Matta (studentessamatta.com). Melissa began the Matta blog to improve her command of the language and to connect with other language learners. It has since grown to include a podcast, "Tutti Matti per l'Italiano" and the Studentessa Matta YouTube channel. Melissa also created Matta Italian Language Immersion Tours, which she co-leads with Italian partners in Italy.

Dreaming Sophia is Melissa's first novel. It is a fanciful look at art history and Italian language and culture, but it is also the culmination of personal stories and insights resulting from her experiences living in Italy, as well as her involvement and familiarity with the Italian language, painting, and art history.

As a student, Melissa lived in Florence with an Italian family. She studied art history and painting and took beginner Italian classes. When she returned home, she threw away her Italian dictionary, assuming she'd never need it again but after launching a successful design career and starting a family, she realized something was missing in her life. That "thing" was the connection she had made with Italy and the friends who live there. Living in Florence was indeed a life-changing event! Wanting to reconnect with Italy, she decided to start learning the language again from scratch. As if indeed possessed by an Italian muse, she bought a new Italian dictionary and began her journey to fluency-a path that has led her back to Italy many times and enriched her life in countless ways.
Now, many dictionaries and grammar books later, she dedicates her time to promoting Italian language studies, further travels in Italy, and sharing her stories and insights about Italy with others. When Melissa is not traveling in Italy, she lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is married and has three boys and two beagles.

Melissa designed and illustrated the cover art for Dreaming Sophia. She also designed the Dreaming Sophia website and created the character illustrations that can be found in the book and on the Dreaming Sophia websites.

Q&A by Melissa Muldoon, author of “Dreaming Sophia”

  1. Where did the idea come from for writing this novel?

One of the greatest reasons for writing this book “Dreaming Sophia” was to weave together fact and fiction in a fanciful creative way, to bring to life the titans of Italian culture, language, and art. The stories flow from posts I write for my dual Italian and English blog "Studentessa Matta. For six years I have published stories about Italy, my travels and living in Italy as well as my experiences learning the language. I was also inspired, by other talented friends and published authors, to try my hand at writing a novel. I have always believed if you can dream it you can do it!

A beautiful dress also inspired me. To be more specific the black and white pomegranate patterned brocade dress embroidered with silver and gold thread that Eleonora de’ Medici wears in the portrait of her painted in 1545 by Agostino Bronzino. I have always been fascinated by the Medici Duchess and have imagined what it must have been like to wear such a beautiful article of clothing. Being an artist and art historian, I have also fantasized about being able to talk with the images in paintings that I have seen in books and museums. If Eleonora de’ Medici, Michelangelo, Leonardo, Simonetta Vespucci, Lucrezia Borgia, Garibaldi and even the Prince himself Lorenzo de’ Medici could speak to me, what would they say to me? What could they tell me about their lives and the times?

2. Do you have another profession?

I began my career as an Art Historian and studio artist. I have a Masters degree in Art History from the University of Illinois in Champaign. I originally intended to teach art. But, after graduation I changed my mind, deciding to “make” art instead. I moved to Chicago and become a graphic designer, working in a small and large design studios where I also learned computer design. After several years I branched out on my own and began my design firm: Melissa Design. I have worked independently as a graphic designer for over twenty years, creating logos, websites, package design, illustration and marketing campaigns. In fact, I created the cover illustration for Dreaming Sophia and the interior character illustrations, as well as the internal book and type design of my novel.

When I started publishing the Studentessa Matta Italian Blog, my career changed again. I became a full-time writer, as well as a producer of Youtube videos and podcasts. My have also applied my writing skills to penning the lyrics for the Matta Youtube channel's theme song. Because of my love for Italy and passion for learning the Italian language, I now co-lead with Italian partners "Learn Italian in Italy programs" twice a year in Lucca and Arezzo as well as organize Italian Homestays for people who want to live and learn in the home of an Italian teacher.

3. If you could go back in time where would you go?

I would travel back to Renaissance Florence. I would like to meet Lorenzo de’ Medici and be a part of his inner circle. It would also be a delight to watch Leonardo and Michelangelo paint side by side in the Palazzo Vecchio in the Salone dei Cinquecento or witness Florence’s magnificent Duomo before it had a completed cupola. How extraordinary to be present in the room when the master architect Brunelleschi explained for the first time his ideas of how to build the largest free-standing dome since antiquity. I would like to dress in a Renaissance gown and take a stroll through Florence to stand in front of Orsanmichele, the granary in the center of town. There I'd watch as the statues representing Florence’s fourteen trade guilds are placed in their niches. What a thrill to then turn the corner and knock on Botticelli's studio and be invited in to observe the elegant master putting the final touches of color to his Birth of Venus. How exhilarating to witness so many changes in society as Medieval man’s view of the world took a step backward and that of a new breed of Renaissance men—embracing new philosophies and humanism—rushed forward.

4. What is your writing process?

I write all the time but find my most productive hours to be when the house is quiet, late at night or the early morning hours before dawn. I am a prolific writer, self-driven and very focused. I write, re-write, and then re-write some more. I am always refining ideas and then just when I think I'm done—I get a new idea. It feels like a never ending process. Inspiration comes during down times when I walk my two beagles, listen to Italian music or when I am at the gym exercising. Often I replay the entire story in my head over and over again when I am lying in bed. Inevitably something pops into my head, and I jump up and turn on my computer and let myself be taken away once again by the story. Sometimes when the writing is going well, I’m not sure where the ideas originate. It is as if muses, similar to Sophia’s are whispering into my ear and guiding my pen.

5. What is your next project?

At the moment I am working on several interesting projects. Since publishing Dreaming Sophia, I have been asked to speak at the Istituto Italiano in San Francisco and several other venues in the city. I also plan to take part in the Italian Christmas market in Fort Mason in the city offering signed copies of my book.

In addition to continuing to write for the Italian-English Matta website, Youtube channel, and Podcast I have created a Dreaming Sophia website and Pinterest boards. On the Dreaming Sophia blog site, I plan to post and write more stories about Italy and art history. Through the site, I also offer fun items I have created and designed, such as Dreaming Sophia book bags, t-shirts, mugs, and calendars. In 2017 I am also organizing a “Dreaming Sophia Tour” in Florence in September. It will be a 5-6 day program, and we will visit all the places that Sophia goes in the book, as well as a day trip to Lucca.

I am also developing an idea for a new novel that will take place in Arezzo in Tuscany. It will have something to do with Arezzo’s famous Antique Market and jousting festival. It will be contemporary with a parallel story that takes you back in time to when Arezzo jealously guarded its gates to keep the Medici at bay.

Dreaming Sophia is now available on Amazon in print and e-pub versions. The e-pub book has links to art, music and film clips mentioned in the book so you can experience the book visually and aurally. You can also find Dreaming Sophia on FacebookPinterest and the web at DreamingSophiaBook.com where the author will be posting more stories about Florence, Italy, and art.

Melissa Muldoon writes the dual language blog StudentessaMatta.com in Italian and English. She also produces Matta Youtube videos in Italian and Podcasts and co-leads Italian Language Immersion programs in Lucca and Arezzo as well as organizes Homestays with Italian teachers improve language skills and learn more about Italian customs and culture.

Book Description:

Divided by Centuries

Diana Dearborn knows all about romance, at least in the books she writes. But passion eludes her in real life—until she’s offered the chance to travel back in time to Camelot. The world of King Arthur and Guinevere is nothing like she pictured, and neither is the knight she encounters upon her return to San Francisco: Gawain, the hero of her current project. He’s complicated, mysterious, and sexier than anything her imagination could conjure. And he’s been waiting for her…

Entwined by Desire

Now, joined together in a desperate race, Diana and Gawain must prevent an ancient, evil force from wreaking mayhem in the all-too-real present. Diana must learn to trust Gawain, even while she encounters secrets about her own past. But even if their mission succeeds, does Diana’s destiny lie with this man from another time—and will their love alter history forever?

Excerpt:
Making love to her had been a miracle. Gawain couldn’t regret it. The way she opened to him, the way she trusted him. He’d worried when she was so hesitant. He’d wondered if she was too damaged by her previous experience.
Had he been gentle enough with her? It had cost him every ounce of his control to go as slowly has he had, when he wanted to claim her as his own, fast and fierce, with the right to protect and defend her, the right to make love to her, for them to bear children together and stand together against all comers.
Gawain felt her stir in his arms. She still had her sleep shirt on, though it was entirely unbuttoned, leaving her soft breasts pressed against his chest. He had captured her thigh between his own as she dozed after sex. This was how they should sleep together, always.
She wiggled the leg between his. He opened his thigh immediately. “Did your leg go to sleep?”
“No. I just liked the feel of it against your, uh, you know.’
He raised his brows. “Against my ‘you know’? Those are my bollocks and my cock you’re speaking of.”
Her eyes went dark. “Yes.”
“I know you know those words. You use them in your books.”
“Yes.” She cleared her throat. “Well, it’s a little different saying them to someone in real life.” She cleared her throat again. “I, uh, I hope it was okay for you.”
“Yelling is a clue. You don’t often get yelling.”
She tried to suppress a smile and looked down.
He felt his cock springing to new life. Would he ever get enough of her? “I’m not sure your research is yet complete if you have to resort to ‘you know’ to describe things.” He rolled over on his back and scooted her over next to him. “Don’t you think you should explore a little yourself? Just in the name of research.”
She grinned but looked away.
“You can’t possibly be shy after opening to my mouth the way you did.”
“Was…was I too brazen?” She looked stricken.
“A man likes his woman to be lady in public and brazen in bed. You were perfect.”
“So, uh, I should be brazen now.” She slid a glance down to his groin.
“Yes.”
She took her lip between her teeth as though she were girding her own loins. “I suppose you know that all those things I wrote in my books—they were pretty much just words to me. I know the words well enough but…”
“But you should explore the reality,” he said.
She smiled shyly. “If you’re sure you wouldn’t mind.”
“I’ll bear up.” At least this time he could wait. He’d had one hell of an orgasm less than an hour ago.
“Well, I think I’ll start with your nipples. I was very curious earlier, but I didn’t like to, uh, just.... Well, you know.”
“You think you’re conveying something with this phrase ‘you know.’ But you’re not. Could you mean ‘lick them’?”
She sighed as if relieved. “Yes. Lick them.”
She bent over him and touched her tongue to his right nipple. Sensation shot to his groin. He hadn’t expected that. Not from just a nipple. Not after having spent himself so forcefully less than an hour before. She ran her tongue over it and then sucked gently. He cleared his throat. Now she raked her teeth across it, not biting, but the mere possibility of biting made him feel open and vulnerable to her. She continued working at it, alternating techniques while her other small hand gravitated toward his other nipple and began to tweak it.
She pulled up. “Now, describe how that feels please.”
“Good.”
She frowned at him. “I can’t just say it feels ‘good’ in my books.”
“Well, I’m a man. Men don’t wax flowery over…over things like that.” He took a breath. “That doesn’t mean you have to stop.”
She slipped down and slid her tongue into his navel. “I have other fish to fry right now. I’ll try to get back to them later.” She pulled his thighs apart and he obliged her. “I’ve read,” she said meditatively, “that the area just behind the testicles is very sensitive.” She took two fingers and rubbed the spot in question slowly, deeply. Lord, he was hard as a rock already. Could things get any more intense? “Is that true?” she asked.
“Uh, yes.” Where did she read these kinds of things? In books like hers?
“Pleasurable?”
“That would be yes.”
“And balls, do you like them caressed if I promise to be very gentle?”
“I, uh, I don’t know. No one’s ever done, uh, that exactly to me.”
“You surprise me.” She gave a knowing smile. “A man with your experience?”
The last woman he’d had was the Green Knight’s wife, and that was many years ago. At the thought of the Green Knight and his failure of honor, his heart contracted. He had to put that failure away. This was for Diana. He would perform the act of loving with her, for her, as a healing rite. That was the height of honor. And if it wasn’t, then honor be damned.

Book Excerpt

Jack made his way up to the deck and pushed the cushioned bench away from the wheel and helm. He preferred to stand while he navigated, and he enjoyed the way the wind played on his face. He walked over to the dock pilings and cast off their moorings and then went over to the wheel, started the boat, and threw it into reverse, pulling away from the dock. He felt on top of the world. Once he had the boat turned and started the thrust, the bow of the boat cut through the water like a pair of sharp scissors down silk. Right away, he’d noticed the difference from the much larger and older Pacific Explorer; this boat sailed smoothly and almost glided through the waves. Of course, they were still in the bay, so it would be different once they were out on the open ocean.
He didn’t know how in the hell he’d convinced Piper to come with him, but he wouldn’t let this chance slip through his fingers. She would get the royal treatment and nothing less. With a thankful heart, he took Butterfly Eyes out to sea. He’d had a few practice runs after he’d bought the boat, but this was the first proper trip. He was excited. As a child, he’d thought his preoccupation with the ocean made him strange, until he’d realized it was a passion.
Some people got their high when they rock climbed, jumped out of airplanes, or skied off a fresh, powdery slope. For Jack, it had been and would always be the deep-blue sea. Nothing made a man feel more insignificant than being a small speck out on the ocean. It also made him feel unique and powerful, something that drew him back each day. He had hired two new tour captains since business took off in November, which had left him more free time to get his life in order.
As he left the bay and chartered into open water, Jack passed a pod of dolphins he normally saw when on his whale-watching tours. The sun shimmered and highlighted their grey-white bodies. The glare from the sun lit a golden path along the ridges of the waves. He opened his shirt so he could feel the wind on his chest, turned on some music, and watched the dolphins swim beside the boat. They loved a free ride. People could learn a lot about how to treat each other from the ocean. Dolphins stuck together, had each other’s backs, and watched out for one another when a shark came.
“You look deep in thought.”
He turned. Piper stood with her hand on the top of the bench seat. She wore cutoff jean shorts and one of his white shirts, buttoned a little between her breasts and tied at the midriff. Her flat abs peeked out at him. Her dark curls flowed loose and free about her face. She’d never looked more beautiful.
“Oh, I’m always deep in thought.”
He cocked an eyebrow at her and returned his attention to the water.
She snorted. “What man is ever deep in thought?”
“Hey, Legs. Be nice now. Not all of us men are idiots. I mean, the majority are, but not all.”
“Well, I worked with Larry for years, so you can’t blame me for a little disillusionment.”
“I’ll do my best to set you straight.” He glanced at her. She stood in the sun, and the breeze lifted her hair. That wicked, wide mouth of hers set his imagination into overdrive. He crooked a finger at her. “C’mere. You’re taking command.”
She pursed her lips and sashayed toward him with a confident prowl. “Ooh, I like being in command. It’s sexy.”
“You’re sexy.” He brought both her hands up to the varnished wheel. “Stay right there,” he breathed in her ear. He reached past her and switched the radio to CD mode. He selected a track, and “Let It Snow” began to play. “Hang on,” he said. He flipped on a light switch on an adjacent wall, and colorful fairy lights atop the boat and all around the helm lit up.
“Oh, how cute!”
“Wait for it,” he cautioned.
He took a small, flat remote control from his pocket and hit a button. Piper looked around. Then a snowflake landed on her nose, followed by several more, until thick, white flakes fell through the open sunroof. Her face lit up in a huge grin, and she shook her head fondly.
“Sunshine and snow… Jack Spencer, you’re a romantic.”
“I’m a crusty-old sea dog. I have no idea what you’re even talking about,” he said dryly
He wiped a snowflake off Piper’s face. She laughed as the holiday jingle serenaded them. “Right.”
He kissed the top of her head and watched the ocean. Piper sighed and leaned into him.
