NBtM: The 12 Nights of Jeremy Sunson by MH Snowy

The 12 Nights of Jeremy Sunson
by MH Snowy

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  Science fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Hidden inside the most unlikely person can be the most extraordinary hero…

Jeremy Sunson is surrounded by crazy. Mrs. Abercrombie, upstairs, is widowed because her husband glued feathers to his arms, jumped off the building and tried to fly. His neighbour, Stuart, has gone mad since his wife died in a freak car accident— his only thread to reality the doomsday machine he’s building and his daughter… and, of course, there’s spacemen in Jeremy’s living room.

Every night, in glorious Technicolor, there’s a battle royal between two high tech assassins who continually blast Jeremy’s apartment to shreds. Each man has one mission: Red wants to kill Jeremy, Blue wants to save him!

Though his therapist insists he’s just having bad dreams—Jeremy knows better. It’s time to fight. He’s sick and tired of being sick, scared and tired! Armed with rare confidence and a baseball bat, this night, Jeremy fights like the crazy man he isn’t!

But how can he ever imagine when he’s won the battle, the war is only just beginning… over and over and over again?

The 12 Nights of Jeremy Sunson – ride a wave of laughter, fun and sci-fi fantasy all the way to Armageddon!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Three:
Jeremy practiced for the rest of the day. He swung the baseball bat with vigour, ducked out of the way and weaved behind the furniture. Even pulled out an unused pair of sneakers after he stubbed his toe on the couch and hopped around howling in pain. Jeremy discovered that kicks were much more effective using the heel instead of the toe, and especially so when you didn't wear slippers. He certainly taught that couch a lesson!
After his foot became stuck in the couch with a well-placed heel strike, he decided he needed something a little less expensive and more durable to use as an enemy. Jeremy propped a mattress against the wall and used it for target practice with the bat, only missing once or twice. After several hours non-stop practice when he'd swung, kicked, rolled and shouted like never before, Mrs Abercrombie knocked on the door and asked if everything was all right.
"Fine, thank you, Mrs Abercrombie." Jeremy wiped his cheeks, certain the unaccustomed moisture more than just tears, though his shin still ached from where the mattress repulsed a furious attack from the bat a moment ago. "I'm just trying to prepare. You know, get in shape."
Mrs Abercrombie didn't seem to know, but she nodded with that patient gleam in her eye when she talked of her late husband—who woke that last day after eighty-two years deciding he could fly. Jeremy didn't know why she gave him that look now: he had no intention of gluing feathers to his arms and finding, after he jumped off a six storey building, that he could not in fact fly. But Mrs Abercrombie nodded with a sad smile once more, asked him to keep the shouting to a minimum, and let him know she would be upstairs if he needed anyone to talk to.
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Melindra Hattfield Snowy, a part-time writer and full-time dreamer, who of course prefers to be known as MH. She is the author of In Harm's Way, the first novella in Harm's story published by Pygaso Productions, described as epic fantasy meets The Truman Show.
MH has also penned several short stories including We Three Laws of Robotics Are and The Secret Invasion of George Kranskii which explains how road rage is result the result of an alien invasion.
You can find MH at www.MHSnowy.com, on Goodreads, and you can follow @MHSnowy_Dreamer on Twitter.
When not writing or occupied with her dual-identity, MH walks through the mountains with her partner or tries to unravel the secrets of her great-grandmother, an adventuress who disembarked from the French steamer Laos in 1931 seeking to uncover rumours of Mayan temples deep in the heart of the Amazon jungle, and disappeared, never to be heard of again.
Interview with MH Snowy
As a kid did you write or make up stories?
I never created stories as a kid. I spent the majority of time struggling to understand other people. Years later, I remain confused, but I have many more explanations for other people's behaviour. As an example, my first short story, The Secret Invasion of George Kranskii, explains how road-rage is actually caused by an alien invasion. I made this startling conclusion after musing why a person would attempt to demolish the self-serve check-out at the local supermarket while I stifled snorts packing my shopping. He, who shall not be named, suffered from a distinct lack of patience.
Where does most of your Character inspiration come from? Do some qualities of your characters come from real people?
Oops. I've just let that slip. I draw inspiration from the wackier side of life.
In Harms Way
Jeremy's story began life from momentary lapses in memory—as in 'did I really do that?' In Jeremy's specific case, his confusion when futuristic assassins blow up his apartment—and the evidence disappears the next day. The result ... well, the excerpts will give you an idea.
Montague the sarcastic magician-trickster searching for the truth that is In Harm's Way, emerged from a momentary thought-bubble about a huge legend who suffered from memory-loss.
Poor Jeremy Harm can't quite believe the stories of his exploits due to an extreme lack of coordination.
Ultimately, all characters are based on something. But not necessarily someone. I see in Jeremy a mixture of my partner and myself. And, though they are chalk and cheese, the same in Montague and Harm.
What is your favorite spot to write?
I would love to write in the shade of an enormous tree, the vista of a snow-capped mountain behind my notebook. And one day I will. But for now the reality is that I only have time to write while I commute to my secret-identity, or in front of my computer on weekends.
What advice would you give budding writers?
We_Three_Laws_of_Robotics_Are_medium
I'm not sure I can provide worthy advice.
However I can relate my strategy: Read. Seek advice. Write. Polish. Try many strategies. Return to start.
In addition, I'm focusing on shorter stories that I can release every few months. The sequel to Jeremy's struggles is on its way. As are more adventures of the investigator in We Three Laws of Robotics Are, and the continuing story of In Harm's Way.
What was the inspiration for your book?
The 12 Nights of Jeremy Sunson is about unlikely heroes. Every day heroes. And how those muscle-bound buffoons we are shown are ... not. Jeremy is an accountant on stress-leave thrust into a nightmare of Armageddon and assassination. But he takes a stand, even though he has no idea who he is, no fighting skills, nor any clue as to what he should do.
We all deal with challenges. For me, Jeremy's story shows that if he can be a hero, we all can.
Sinners & Saints : A Patriot's Manifesto
by Kristina Garlick
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: YA Fantasy

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
My name is Zoey Major and I live in Fort Star, New Jersey. I am also a survivor in the zombie apocalypse. Seems very cut and dry but I have been hiding something- like really huge. My secret is game changing. I am not like the others... I know, what a surprise twist! Unfortunately, I can’t tell you why I am different. If you really want to know, you have to figure it out. Hey, even in these dark times, a girl needs her secrets.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt Four (PG-13):

United we... united we... we were supposed to stand together as a society but it did not work out like that. The United States and much of the world, actually went to sh*t for a little bit when the zombies came. Perhaps the only saving grace was the fact that man learns to adapt. We always do. A prime example would be the invention of the wheel, the television or even a toaster pastry because why the f*ck not eat something bad for you?
For you see, if man has a want or desire, it may take years, but he'll invent it. One thing I am still waiting on is that damn time machine. I am looking at you, Doc Brown. Ha! However, not all inventions should ever leave the paper. Sometimes an idea is just an idea as biological weapons rarely ever make anything better. Yeah, perhaps not every weapon should be tested or even used, as the results can't always be contained. United we... united we... we were supposed to stand together.

Present Day, June 30, 10:25 pm

Catey: "So is it cool that I sign you up for speed dating?"

Zoey: "What? No, f*ck no."

Catey: "Why not?"

Zoey: "There should be no speed dating in the zombie apocalypse."

Catey: "It's post apocalypse so get it right."

Zoey: "For now."

Catey: "And this is why you are single. You are so negative."

Zoey: "Huh, I didn't know that was the reason. I just thought it was because every eligible bachelor who isn't a toad has been either taken or eaten but hey, maybe I am wrong."

Catey: "I think it's because you put up a wall."

Zoey: "Stop analyzing me, or at the very least give me a Rorschach test or at the very least a crossword puzzle to pass the time then."

Interview with Ashish Malpani

As a kid did you write or make up stories?
>>As a kid I was pretty introvert and used to observe more than share. My mom for one wasn’t really happy about it. But that did result in making up stories. My first stories were based on super humans and had a lead character who could jump over buildings but could not get away from the crowd. I do think that contradiction manifests in the characters of ‘Ten Days in October’.

Where does most of your Character inspiration come from?
>> I strongly believe that every person you meet, every incident that happens around you leaves an impression on your mind. I often wonder that the people involved in the incidents were to speak to me, what will they say? What will be their stories? ‘Ten Days in October’ is inspired by a real life event that happened in the rural Indian town that I grew up in. My characters are inspired by people I thought will be affected by that incident.

Do some qualities of your characters come from real people?
>> My characters are indeed inspired by real people. Sometimes I do tend to divert from the initial character sketch to give more real life feel. My protagonist in ‘Ten Days in October’ is someone you will love and hate both. You will like him because he is a good guy at heart and wants to do the right thing. However, he does show signs of patriarchal thinking and has developed philosophy that justifies doing the wrong things too. Other characters too are based on people I have known or met in my travels.

What was the inspiration for your book?
>> As a kid, I always liked reading and making stories. I always dreamt about writing but somehow it never became a reality before. I strongly believe that every person you meet, every incident that happens around you leaves an impression on your mind. I often wonder that the people involved in the incidents were to speak to me, what will they say? What will be their stories? Some of the incidents we witness have a broader social impact and do touch our nerves. The people who are involved in such incidents definitely have gone through a lot and have a lot to share. Reporting of these incidents in popular media is purely based on coverage, reader appeal and sensationalism. We often read the report in the media, feel bad about it for few minutes and then move on with our lives. I fear that over the years, we have taken this as a new normal and let it desensitize us. As a writer, somewhere I feel that it is my responsibility to connect with readers and invoke thoughtful dialogue about such issues.

What is your favorite spot to write?
>> As the night falls, the study in our house becomes the perfect setup for my fingers to start beating the keyboard along with some music streaming through the earphones and a warm cup of coffee.

What advice would you give budding writers?
>> Since writing and publishing was really new for me, I didn’t discuss it with lot of people beforehand. I disclosed it after I had submitted the novel for self-publishing. So I will summarize my learning from the process here.
  • Self-publishing is easy: Both eBook and print versions are easy to do. Making changes after publication is easy as well. For all the options that I had discussed before, the quality is relatively better than small publication houses.
  • Buyers are wary of self-published books: In my experience, the buyers, book reviewers stay away from self-published books. First, because it is easy, everyone is doing it and not all books are great. Second, the books don’t look professional when compared with regular books. It is estimated that less than 1% of the self-published books really cut it.
  • Set the expectations right: It is estimated that average print self-published book sells about 100-150 copies; and mostly because of friends and family. So don’t expect miracles to happen overnight. It does need lot of marketing and promotional support to get any good sales numbers. Not everyone who is your ‘friend’ on Facebook is going to buy the book.
  • Good book cover and back cover blurb is a must: But it doesn’t guarantee that the book will fly off the shelf. But mediocre book cover and poorly written blurb will definitely turn the readers away. The same applies to the content. It is critical to get the content professional edited.
  • Do it because you want to: Write because you want to share something with the world, and not to make money from day one. Enjoy the process and the short limelight. Needless to say, don’t quit your day job just yet.

Excerpt 3

Step by firm step he approaches me, backing me against the wall. “Lisa, I can only be so strong.” He captures my wrists, holding them firmly above my head. Staring vehemently into my eyes, he continues, “I’m not a saint. I love my brother, but when it comes to you I lose my mind and my honor.” His eyes lower to my heaving chest. After dropping his head back to look at the ceiling, he returns his gaze and continues, “I’m begging you to stop whatever this teasing torment is, because if you keep this up we’re both going to wake with regrets.”
His forearms rest against the wall. Fanning his warm, labored breathing across my face, his hips press firmly against me. The heat of his rock solid erection between my thighs excites and lubricates every blessed inch of me. His head drops to my shoulder. Against my ear, he whispers, “You’re my kryptonite.”
“My hearts pounding,” I reply.
“Sweetheart, mines been pounding ever since I first laid eyes on you.”
I whisper, “You really want me…and think about me?”
With his forehead pressed to mine, he replies, “If you’re asking me how many times you’ve entered my thoughts I would have to say once, because, quite honestly, you never really left my mind from our very first encounter.”
“How much of what you say is bullshit and how much is sincere?”
He tosses his head back and laughs, before placing his lips directly in front of mine. “When it comes to you, Lisa, it’s all factual.”
“You’re maddening.”
His crystal blue eyes turn dark. “Well, that’s the pot calling the kettle black.”
His breath brushes warmly against my lips. “Are you going to kiss me?” I ask.
“I want to.”
“Then do it. I miss being kissed.”
