Excerpt:
Ten-year-old Emma sat astride the couch arm and cantered in sync with a girl, even younger than her, in a video. The pink ribbons in the girl’s brown braids flapped behind her. The gray pony’s legs fired like an engine in overdrive. At the approach of each jump, the girl thumped her boots on the pony’s side and swatted it with a crop.
Her hands clinging to pretend reins guiding her imaginary mount expertly through the Speed Jumping event. She leaned into the turns and squared her pony to the jump. Gauging the canter strides to take off, she squeezed with her knees and balanced over her mount’s withers. With a long moment of suspension, her imagination soared over the jump. Clear! She calculated the angle to the next jump. As the video pair nailed the last combination, she patted the couch jubilantly, praising her pony.
Mom tapped her shoulder. “Come on. We’ll be late for your lesson.” She switched off the TV.
Her parents always asked her to use her words, but she thought her voice sounded strange. Emma signed whenever she could get away with it. “I get so into watching her ride that I forget everything else.” Her own riding lessons were too quiet, too slow, and too safe. They never had the excitement and energy of the girl in the video. But then the girl with the flying braids wasn’t deaf.
Completely deaf in one ear, she couldn’t remember a time when she didn’t need a hearing aid in the other ear. Her parents told her she didn’t lose her hearing until the year she started kindergarten. She had it, and she lost it. And the specialists couldn’t tell them why.
She slipped on her riding boots, grabbed her safety vest and helmet, and flew.
Mom held out her jacket. “Bundle up. I don’t want you catching cold.” “Yesterday, it was 72.” As she stepped outside, Emma shivered. “Today, it’s 49. That’s Texas. We never know what to wear.” As the February winds swirled the trees, a feed store delivery
truck sputtered and rumbled outside the arena making it impossible for her to hear. While the hearing aid worked okay in small rooms, she found it useless outside. Even a slight breeze put so much static in her ear she had to turn it off. Her parents were saving to get her a higher quality one. Even though it was a pain, she wished they’d help her save for a horse of her own instead. But one dime at a time, she’d do it. She wasn’t complaining. Not really. Because she had Pony-Boy.
She hung around the pony farm down the road until Mrs. Holmes recognized her as a horse lover and knew Emma wasn’t going away. Mrs. Holmes graciously offered to give her a riding lesson on the old pony her college-age daughter had outgrown.
A big chalkboard hung in the center of the arena, attached to two jump standards. As she circled the arena at a trot to warm up Pony-Boy, she watched for Mrs. Holmes to write instructions on the board. Things like “relax your calf muscles” and “sink deeper into the stirrups”.
For safety, Mom positioned herself at one end of the arena. Though Brianna didn’t know how to sign or anything about horses, Mom insisted Emma’s sister take her position at the opposite end of the arena. They would signal if there were any urgent instructions. Like really, Mom? What could happen on Pony-Boy?
Any horseback riding scared Mom, but jumping even little crossrails terrified her. The only reason she got to ride was because Dad insisted she do things hearing kids did. To get Mom to agree, she had to wear an ugly, bulky safety vest as if she were competing in upper-level, Cross-Country eventing. The helmet was strapped on so tightly she could hardly swallow. She was mostly deaf, but not helpless.

Earlier books in the series:

Mary's Song (Dream Horse Adventures #1)Selah's Sweet Dream (Dream Horse Adventures #2)Selah's Painted Dream (Dream Horse Adventures #3)

Mary's Song is only 99 cents at the moment. This story is completely independent of the three Selah books. It is the story of Selah's grandmother.

Susan CountAbout the Author:

How many twists and turns can one person take before they figure out what they were born to do? Susan Count’s degree is in Applied Science–nothing in that prepared her to write novels for children. But one day, she began to write with no preconceived ideas. No one could have been more astounded than she was when it turned into a middle grade equine series. As a member of Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, American Christian Fiction Writers, and Texas Association of Authors, she takes the craft of writing seriously and considers revision to be her super-power.

She writes at an antique secretary desk that occupies a glass room with a forest view. Fittingly, it once belonged to the same wise grandmother who introduced Susan to the love of reading via Walter Farley’s horse books. That desk has secret compartments which hold memories, mysteries and story ideas.

Susan is a lifelong equestrian and is owned by a Rocky Mountain Horse. She is convinced that the only thing more delightful than riding the forest trails might be writing horse adventure stories. She invites you to saddle up and ride along.

What reviewers are saying:

"A taut, brilliantly conceived thriller with impeccable pacing bursting with ideas...For fans of noir-laden science fiction in the vein of Philip K. Dick that is in equal measures suspenseful, gripping, darkly funny and philosophically challenging." (starred review and named a Top Indie Book of the Year) - Kirkus Reviews

"There simply aren't enough stars to communicate the impressiveness of O'Donnell's work here. He has taken religion, science, politics, theory and philosophy and blended them all together to create what is easily one of the most important books to come out this year." - Pavarti K. Tyler, Fighting Monkey Press

Kingdom is a thrill-a-minute, bio-punk myth that manages to wrestle with the most pressing issues of the new millennium. O'Donnell has crafted a kickass novel of tomorrow night, when the big party gets raided by the monsters we've been building for the last half-century. Hip and hellish, wild and weird, Tiber City is the dystopian megalopolis into which we will all soon move--whether we know it or not. - Jack O’Connell, Author of Word Made Flesh and Box Nine

Excerpt:
Tiber City
Now
The rain started an hour or so after the sun sank below the horizon. It continued for most of the night, pelting the city with a warm, gritty rain that smelled like hot dogs and medicine. A few of the billboards flashed warnings, and several of the community action drones bleated pre-recorded pollution alerts as they circled the city. It was the same message over and over, advising that atmospheric alterations may be—may be—responsible for elevated levels of toxicity and that citizens may want to seek shelter.
Meghan had been back in the city less than a week and she was already sick of the endless warnings, public service announcements, and targeted advertising pulsing from the thousands of video screens that tattooed all the empty space in the city. Buildings, cars, statutes, benches, the sandwich boards of doom prophets—everything was fair game, including the fucking sky, which came with really low cost-per-square-inch projections, and outstanding consumer visibility. Meghan hated it all. She had developed a particular loathing for the community action drones, which, she knew, were capable of alternating any number of differently phrased warnings but instead the AI chose to repeat the same few sentences over and over as they looped around the city until the announcements blurred into a singular noise bent on hammering the city into submission. Tiber wasn’t just loud—it was so oppressive that outside thought or private external communication was almost impossible.
That night, the rain cast the entire city into slow motion; the streets a sea of brake lights and flashing police sirens. There was spillover from the subway; service had been disrupted after a young woman had blown her brains out all over one of the shiny new D-line trains, the sirens from the response teams howling in concert—city police, fire, ambulance, hazmat, terrorism, transit police, and for some reason, various representatives of Tiber’s private security forces. Closed Circuit television footage of the suicide was being broadcast on the city’s massive digitalized billboards reserved for the ‘news,’ presented in ultra-high definition by the Shinto-Blackpool corporation, details of the incident streaming across the bottom of the screen. A police spokeswoman would address the media shortly.
Pressing her way forward through the chaos, Meghan jumped from taxi to taxi, switching cars whenever the traffic in her lane froze, moving from car to car, a few blocks at a time. Each time she slid into a new taxi, the drivers just stared at her through their rearview mirror—it was better to have a rider than none, even if only for a few blocks. She would light a cigarette and stare right back. All around her, the city was brake lights and flickering advertisements. It was on nights like these that Meghan hated Tiber and its endless blocks of skyscrapers and nightclubs and lifestyle centers. Don’t like your current life? Just swipe your card and sign here, and here, and here—that was the promise offered by the multitude of screens looming on either side of the avenue. No returns though, thought Meghan, as her taxi drifted past yet another massive glass-front gym packed with grim-faced, solitary thirty-somethings. A decent looking guy on one of the elliptical machines noticed her through the windows and offered what Meghan assumed was his best sexy smile, his back snapping straight, his stride suddenly more confident. Smiling back, Meghan raised a middle finger in his general direction.
Figuring out where Dylan had been was the easy part; finding people was one of Finn’s specialties. Getting to him before someone else did—that was going to be the trick. Finn warned her to stay away; told her Dylan was in bad shape, and getting worse. But she needed to know what he knew—what the information she stole from her father meant, and how it related to what she saw in the desert. And, there was something else—a deeper motivation she wasn’t willing to accept or admit but it was there, driving her into the Tiber City night.
By the time she reached the End of the World party, the celebration was in its death throes—revelers scattering in ones and twos, languid beats slouching through open doors and into the rain-soaked alleyways, slow but relentless. Meghan slipped through the half-shadows and flicking neon toward the warehouse where she could see the bullet-proof glass on the 24-hour opioid dispensaries vibrating from the bass. This reminded her: Junkie business in the Jungle district is bad news all around
When Meghan found Dylan—exactly where Finn had told her he would be—he was face down in a back alley behind a warehouse, the outline of his body visible in the glow thrown off by a digitalized advertisement—Jack Heffernan, Progress Party candidate for President—stretched across the face of a skyscraper, blanketing this and the adjacent dozen or so blocks in a cold artificial light. There were razor-sharp gashes cleaved into the city’s surface and as she picked up her pace toward the body, Meghan imagined the earth’s crust recoiling from the steel, light, and noise, retreating back toward the darkness at its core. The Heffernan ad flashed the nation’s flag for several seconds, bathing the alley in a pale red hue. A drone was hovering a few feet above Dylan’s crumbled form.

Excerpt:
Beth regretted that Adam had a girlfriend, even though she knew that at fifteen she was too young for him.
Ms. Capulet stood in the middle of the fi eld and called out, “Dream time!” She sounded just as excited as Beth felt.
“It’s time to start our first read-through of the play,” said the drama teacher. With long gray hair and a tie-dye shirt, she looked like an old hippie. “You’ve all taken my classes before, so I’m not going to give an introductory talk about acting in Shakespearean plays. You can sit on the ground when you aren’t in a scene, but I’d like you to stand when you are.”
Beth trembled with excitement as the first read-through began. Even though she had played Puck in grade school and middle school, playing the part again gave her goosebumps. It didn’t matter that this stage was a glorified lawn.
The time came for Bottom to lose his donkey’s ears. Beth said the words, but the donkey’s ears remained.
“Take off the donkey’s ears, Adam,” Beth whispered.
“I can’t!” he cried out so loudly that the whole cast heard him.
“They won’t come off! They really are donkey’s ears! Oh, no!” He shook his head as if he could shake off the ears.
Some of the other actors laughed and applauded him.
Tiffany grabbed the ears and tried to pull them off . “This is a rotten joke,” she complained.
“Ouch!” Adam exclaimed, pushing her hand away. “The darned things are real.” His voice sounded like he was almost in tears. “What’s happening to me?”
“It’s not a joke!” Tiffany gasped. “They won’t come off ! They’re real ears! I see wax in them!”
The girls playing Moth and Mustardseed screamed.
“Tiff any’s not that good at acting. It has to be true,” the actor who played Oberon said. “What’s going on here?”
Beth could smell that some animal was present. It must be a donkey, or part of one.
Most of the cast members backed away from Adam.
Beth fought back tears. Had she harmed this nice guy?
“Be calm,” Ms. Capulet ordered. “Everyone be calm.”
“Somebody help me,” Adam pleaded, rubbing his ears as if he could change them. “Please help me.” His voice shook. “This is too crazy.”
Tiff any pointed at Beth. “It’s your fault. You changed his ears. You’re a witch, not an actor.”
“Um, not as far as I know.” Beth trembled. She wanted to run away and hide. “Ears, be healed. Return to normal,” she commanded, just in case she did have magical powers, because she hadn’t intended to give Adam donkey’s ears. She liked him—which was more than she could say for Tiffany. Beth rubbed his ears in case that would help. They felt furry, and they didn’t change.
Adam groaned. “I’m supposed to play Romeo next month. How can I play Romeo with donkey’s ears! Hee haw. Oh no, I didn’t mean to say that! Hee haw! Help!” His voice broke.
Adam’s braying was so loud that it hurt Beth’s ears. She wanted to back off, but that seemed mean.
“You’ll have to play Bottom for the rest of your life,” Tiffany said, looking at him as if he smelled like a donkey’s turds. “And Beth will always have to play Puck—but only with you, because no one else will want to act with her.”
“You should have donkey’s ears, too!” Beth exclaimed, and Tiffany’s head sprouted donkey’s ears.
Tiffany shrieked. “You monster! Give me back my normal ears this minute, or I’ll sue you. Hee haw. I hate you.”
Beth couldn’t help laughing. She felt sorry for Adam, but not for Tiffany. Then she choked on her laughter. What had she done? How did she do that?
Everyone stared at Beth.
“You deliberately did that to Tiffany!” The girl who played Moth pointed at Beth. “Tiffany was right. You are a wicked witch.”

Einstein's Compass by Grace Allison Blair

Einstein's Compass coverEinstein's Compass

By Grace Blair

Genre: Time Travel Adventure/ Historical Fiction/ Science Fiction

Age category: Young Adult

Release Date: January 1, 2019

Blurb:

What if young Albert Einstein had a magical compass that inspired his theories of relativity?

In Einstein's Compass: A YA Time Traveler Adventure, a young Albert is given a supernatural compass that allows him to travel through time and space, and find wisdom in other dimensions, including the lost city of Atlantis. But evil forces seek the power of the compass, including a monstrous, shape-shifting dragon from a different age. Can the compass protect Albert from such villainy?

Excerpt:
Excerpt #1 Treasure Hunt:
Johann perked up.  “Hey, did you bring your compass?”
Albert brightened at the question. “Of course, I have my compass. Why?”
“The monks at the brewery have their annual treasure hunt tomorrow. Guys, our age will be competing, and I signed us up. There’ll be a lunch buffet afterward, too,” he added, never one to pass up a good meal. “I bet your compass will give us an edge!”
“Could be,” Albert said thoughtfully. “A treasure hunt, eh? Interesting.”
* * *
A crowd gathered on the east side of the Ammer Lake Holy Mountain. The early morning sun broke over the summit. Five Benedictine Monks passed out papers with instructions to the hunters. The scavenger hunt would begin at nine a.m.
The dark-haired, blue-eyed, thirtyish monk, Dr. Peter Collins, stood on a step stool in his brown monk’s habit. Looking out over the crowd, he cleared his throat, and in a loud, enthusiastic voice shouted, “Good morning everyone! Welcome to our annual scavenger hunt commemorating the feast day of Mary Magdalene. Today you will be seeking replicas of ancient relics in our Monastery, one of which is that of the venerable saint herself.”
Johann surveyed the crowd from the middle of the pack and guessed there were about thirty or so; 15 teams of two boys each, like him and Albert. Albert held the piece of paper they’d been given when they registered.
Johann noticed that the bully, Werner von Wiesel, was at the center of a group of his toadies—boys who sucked up to him because his father, a retired Prussian Army colonel, was considered an “important citizen” of Munich. From Johann’s perspective, Werner was just a spoiled rich kid. But for some reason, he seemed to have it in for Albert. He rarely passed up an opportunity to give Albert a hard time.
As Johann reflected on Werner, the brother continued. “Each team has an instruction sheet with a map of the area. At the bottom of the map, you will see that there is a list of map coordinates and clues that relate to some of the monastery’s the relics.” Then he looked up with a mischievous smirk. “However, to make things interesting, not all coordinates or clues apply to the relics we have placed out for this hunt.”
“How many relics are there, Brother Peter?” Werner wanted to know.
“The monk’s smirk broadened into a grin. “Well, if we told you that, Werner, it would take away some of the fun.” The boys groaned.
“When you find a relic, we want you to write what that relic is next to the clue that hints at it. Do not touch or remove what you find. We want everyone to have a chance to complete the hunt.”
The monk looked down and consulted his notes, then continued his spiel. “When you have located all the relics you can find and noted their locations on your map, bring your entry form to the dining hall. One of our brothers will take it and record the time.”
The abbot  looking very serious said, “Since I’m sure you will have built up quite an appetite on your quest, your team will then proceed to the dining room for a hearty lunch.” He smiled and nodded, allowing the resulting cheer to dissipate.
“The winner will be based on the number of relics you find, the accuracy of your notes on the relics you have identified, and the speed with which you found them.”
“What will I be winning this year, Brother Peter?” Werner haughtily called out.
The monk waited for the catcalls and jeering to stop, then said, “We’re not revealing the prize in advance, Werner, so you’ll just have to wait to find out.”
After the predictable grumbling, the monk asked, “Okay, any questions?”
“Enough talking! Let’s get started!” Werner hollered impatiently. The monk held up his hands and frowned at Werner. “Hold your horses, Werner. We want to make sure everyone knows what they need to know.
Werner scowled and glared, looking threateningly around the room. Many of the boys cringed at Werner’s anger, and no one dared ask a question.
The monk waited, then, hearing no questions, nodded, “Okay then. Gentlemen, you may begin!”
Most of the boys rushed off on the hunt. Werner managed to bump into Albert as he rushed by, nearly knocking him over. “Oops, sorry Einstein,” he sneered insincerely as Albert regained his balance.
Though they were as eager as the rest of the boys to start their search, instead of rushing off aimlessly, Albert and Johann trotted over to the green lawn next to the Monastery’s central walkway and sat down. Albert wanted to approach the hunt rationally. He laid the map on the grass and took out his precious compass.
“What are you going to do with the compass, Albert?” Johann wanted to know.
“I’m not sure, but I felt like it might help us focus on the clues and where we want to go,” he replied as Johann settled himself next to him, watching with interest.
Albert opened the top of the gem-encrusted compass and set it on the map as he considered the layout. The morning rays were reflecting on the device’s face. Looking at the map and then the topography of the surroundings, Albert tried to determine where they needed to go. He pointed to the map and said, “The first set of coordinates is 47.58 North 11.118 East, but it’s not clear exactly where that is.”
As Albert spoke the coordinates, a beam of violet light suddenly shot out of the compass extending to a point on the map. Both boys gasped in shock. They could not believe what they saw.
Johann gulped and whispered, “What was that?!”
Albert could only stare as the light disappeared. Then he closed his eyes and rubbed his temples as if he was trying to ease an ache. “I have no idea. It’s scientifically not possible.”

"I was impressed with how the authors managed to incorporate the known information on the lost continent of Atlantis, Light Workers, souls, reincarnation, time travel and the early years of Albert Einstein before he became famous, into a mesmerizing work of fiction readers will have difficulty putting down." Doug Simpson, Author of "We Lived In Atlantis"

"I recommend Einstein's Compass as historical fan-fiction, the magic, and fantasy built on top of the factual world of Albert Einstein. Although it is intended for a Young Adult audience, it is well suited to adults who enjoy fictionalized history with a wide-ranging epic theme and a Harry Potter-esque plot. Jacqui Murray, Author of Ask a Tech Teacher

"The extended combination of history and magic was an unexpected mix, which pulled me in from the beginning, captivating me all the way to the surprising ending. This novel takes you from the early childhood of Einstein, which includes an illness that may have contributed to his perspective on the world around him as he grew older. It is refreshing to find a combination of history, religion, and folklore told in such a compelling manner with just the right amounts of magic and suspense. Rox Burkey, Author of The Enigma Series

Einstein's Compass exhibits a solid writing style and dutifully hits Einstein's developmental and educational milestones while weaving in an imaginative backstory and unique antagonists' perspectives. The what if of Albert Einstein developing his landmark scientific theories through the aid of spiritualism and time travel, all the while battling an immortal dragon-person from Atlantis, is certainly a unique concept.
