Brandon is determined to find the connection—if any—between the cases and prove himself a good agent. He even has high hopes of bringing some of the women home alive, but his new boss seems to have made it his mission to antagonize him. Brandon’s not about to let his temper make him lose the career he’s worked so hard for, but will he be able to bite his tongue and get the job done? Meet today’s guest, Carolyn Arnold.

She is an international bestselling and award-winning author, as well as a speaker, teacher, and inspirational mentor. She has four continuing fiction series and has written nearly thirty books. Both her female detective and FBI profiler series have been praised by those in law enforcement as being accurate and entertaining, leading her to adopt the trademark, POLICE PROCEDURALS RESPECTED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT™.

Today, she answers a few questions for us and gives us insight into her life and journey as a mystery author.

Have you ever been on a manhunt or at the scene where a dead body was found?
I took part in my local police department’s Citizen’s Academy. As part of this, I received an inside look at seventeen divisions over a ten-week period. As an added benefit, each student was afforded a ride-along. And mine… Well, I went on the perfect one for a crime writer.

My ride-along actually started out with a manhunt. I experienced the excitement of wanting to find the guy and found myself scrutinizing every male I spotted in the area just to make sure he wasn’t the one we were after. Unfortunately, the search moved to the downtown area from the eastern end of the city where the hunt had begun, and the sergeant signed off the investigation. By the end of my ride-along, about five hours later, the man still hadn’t been found.

After the sergeant left the investigation, he turned to me as he was driving and asked if I had ever seen a dead body. I told him I had at memorials and funerals and then asked why. I soon found out that our next stop involved one.

I figured I’d catch a glimpse of the deceased under a tarp or being wheeled away, but I got far more than that. I received a front-row seat to a death investigation. For hours, the sergeant and I were mere feet away from the body. I witnessed firsthand how it changed color over time, but I also found that I went into detective-mode. The forensic identification unit—essentially CSIs—was called in and arrived with collection kits. The team members gloved up, snapped photographs, took fingerprints from the deceased, and more.

The entire time that I was on scene, I noticed myself going into a detached state—the result of adrenaline. Later that evening, it began to sink in that I had spent hours with a dead body, and I was nauseated. As more time passed, I became weepy as it sank in that the deceased had been a husband, a father, a lover, a friend…a person. That night I dreamed about the man. It wasn’t a nightmare, but I was an officer trying to figure out what had happened to him.

I couldn’t imagine returning to the field the next day and having a similar experience or witnessing something even worse, like a violent murder scene or that of a fatal car accident.

What do members of law enforcement say about your books?
Many testimonials attest that I am pleasing readers in law enforcement. They love that my mysteries are accurate in that regard, and they view that alone as a sign of my respect for them.

Here are a few testimonials that I have received on Eleven (Brandon Fisher FBI series):

“I spent thirty-eight years with a major police department in Missouri, fifteen of which were in the homicide section. I also had numerous dealings with the FBI throughout my career, mostly bank robbery, interstate shipment thefts, and a few kidnappings. Eleven kept my interest piqued throughout… Loved it.”
Richard Bartram, Sergeant (retired), St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, St. Louis, MO

“I am a forty-year veteran of police work. All local, no Fed. Eleven was a great read. All the descriptors and nomenclature were spot on.”
–Joe Danna, Police Officer, Katy Independent School District Police Department, Katy, TX

“Very good! I worked as a police officer for eleven years and with the Federal Bureau of Prisons for twenty-two. I have also dealt with the FBI.”
–Richard Smith, Facilities Development Manager (retired), Federal Bureau of Prisons, Central Office, Washington, DC

“A great police procedural! … Full of twists and turns. The characters are well-developed and a mix of interesting personalities. … Holds your interest to the end!”
–Mark Davis, FBI Special Agent (retired), Washington, DC

What did you do before you became a bestselling author?
For a living, I worked in accounts receivable for a few different companies collecting from businesses. Yet, despite working full time, in 2006 I was reunited with writing. I wrote every chance I got—before work, on lunch breaks, after work, on the weekends. I became so focused on writing and the publishing world that hardly a day went by without them being a part of my life, and since the summer of 2014, I’ve been a full-time author.

How do you know so much about what criminals think?
I can’t answer that without incriminating myself… Just kidding.

Everyone has what we call a “dark side.” In writing these books, I suppose you could say I tap into this side of my psyche. Whatever I can scheme up is possible, and I write that which scares and excites me.

When did you know that you had hit the big time with your books?
When I got to say good-bye to my day job! Even before I fully resigned, I had cut back a five-day a week job to four days, then to three. It got to the point, though, that I loathed going in for that many days, and I knew it was time to make the move and become a full-time author. That was in the summer of 2014. Since then, I incorporated my own publishing company in the summer of 2015, and, at the start of 2016, my husband joined me there full time.

Genre: YA Superhero Fiction

Publisher: Silver Crown Books

ASIN: B07QJV6KZQ

Number of pages: 205
Word Count: 75170

Cover Artist: Story Styling Cover Designs

Tagline: Superheroes aren’t born, they’re molded by government academies.

Book Description:

A genetic leap gave her powers, but before she can take up the cape, Ellen will have to brave Imperium Academy.

Ellen doesn't remember much about her parents, they died when she was four. Raised by her aunt she's envied for years the homo-magis children called on to be tested and subsequently enrolled in one of the five academy’s for heroes.

Ellen isn't a homo-magis.

Or so she thought.

Her parents were two of the first Superheroes, their lives sacrificed to stop Novaside and save their only child.

Ecstatic, yet a little nervous to finally be a part of the world she'd dreamed of, Ellen is off to Imperium Academy.

But her classing doesn't go as expected.

Instead of joining the ranks of the illustrious Star Heroes, Ellen is regulated to the role of Sidekick, after all, night vision is barely a superpower.

Many have begun to question the need for Sidekicks, some teachers even suggesting they would be better suited to other employment.

But with Novaside getting bolder, and her latest attack hitting too close to home, Ellen is determined to stay at the academy and prove them wrong.

After all, where better to learn to be a hero than a school full of supers?

Excerpt:

Her classroom
had seating for thirty-four students but a third of them sat empty now. It was
an inevitable outcome. Of course they would leave—she would have. Had she had
that option. Had she been born a magis instead of a regular plain old sapien.
Ellen propped
her head on her hand, staring at the orange and red leaf flicking at the window
pane as she tried to recall their names. The names of the ones now living the
life she dreamed of.
When she started
middle school, she made a point not to befriend the magis children. They would
all be gone soon enough, once they received their green and gold technote
inviting them to be tested.
And though she
knew her invitation would never come, it did nothing to stay the dreams—each
night she saw herself presenting to a Safe Haven Clinic to have her gene blocker
reversed, freeing her enhancements from their suppression.
And each night a
different gift emerged. Flight, strength, speed. Each gift, each power, as
incredible as the last. Ellen dreamed of using her awakened enhancements to
defeat the rebels in the streets of New State, New York, until her aunt would
break through her illusions with a call for breakfast, sending the scent of
bacon to awaken her mind.
For three years
she watched the magis children while they prepared for what was to come, a
future in the spotlight of the world. A future protecting the ones like her,
the normals. The weak. The homo-sapiens. Even the class fives, the ones who
would become sidekicks, didn’t come back.
Now, on her
fourteenth birthday, Ellen found herself in her first week of high school,
staring mindlessly at the empty chairs they would have occupied while her
teacher regaled what was left of her students with a tale of heroes lost.
A rumble
vibrated through the classroom floor, pulling Ellen from her daze. Her
teacher’s monotonous voice was interrupted by the shrill siren of the city’s
emergency system. Ellen’s heart raced as she pushed aside the notebook covering
her desk’s inbuilt screen, just as the first image appeared.
Red bolded font
scrolled beneath the alternating pictures and videos of the aftermath of
another attack. The rebels had leveled a Safe Haven Clinic, the feed showed a
dust cloud billowing through the streets filled with people stumbling from the
darkness, hugging their bloodied arms against their chests as if that would
keep them safe.

Interview with Rebecca Bosevski
Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story?
A little of both. I used to let the voice of the story call all the shots, but in a series, you need a little more control. With Imperium Academy, the characters sometimes pull me in directions I didn’t expect, and though I have a plan for each book in the series, I will try to adapt the plan to fit in their demands.

Convince us why you feel your book is a must read.
We all want to believe we can be extraordinary, but somewhere along the way, some of us lose that belief– Imperium Academy reignites that fundamental truth, that we truly can be extraordinary, but more importantly, that who we truly are, is exactly who we are meant to be.

Have you written any other books that are not published?
I have a few short stories that are waiting to be fleshed out into full novels. They were started back when I was all pantsing and no planning.

Pen or type writer or computer?
Pen to plan, computer to write, kindle app on my phone to edit, and a typewriter on my bookshelf as antique inspiration.

Anything you would like to say to your readers and fans?

I love hearing from you guys. Seriously, find me on Facebook or hit me up on my website any time, I would love to connect.

Will
a snap decision change their lives forever?

Bizarre
kidnappings stun the Big Island of Hawaii, pulling Danker Donahue back into the
game and forcing him to partner with Jolene Kualoha, the woman who left him
seven years ago when his DNA showed up in paternity lawsuit. The
prejudice-motivated hate crimes are the wildest anyone has ever seen. Victims
are being poisoned then released once the ransoms are paid, many losing their
lives.

In
the shadow of Jolene's success as a helicopter pilot, a troubled woman develops
a fixation on Jolene and imitates her appearance. Matters turn dark when the
copycat is shot dead. Was Jolene the target? Threats mount when she barely
survives an accident after her brake cables are severed.

When
these crimes threaten her sanity, Jolene is forced to trust the one person she
thought she’d lost forever, Danker. Instantly, sparks fly between them, and as
much as she wants to rekindle their relationship, she must protect her heart.

An
old enemy, Seamus McGinn, breaks out of a maximum-security prison and invites
Danker to a meet-up. Surprisingly, the kidnapper joins forces with McGinn along
with his sick fans. McGinn trumpets his ‘murders by ice pick’, and it’s up to
Danker to stop him. The whole island is on edge with a live feed from the
maniac’s website.

In
a stolen moment, Jolene shows him hope, and he makes a snap decision that will
change their lives forever. Will he make it back to show her?

 Excerpt

Chapter
One

Seven
years since their breakup, Jolene Kualoha spotted Danker Donahue, ambling from
the parking lot toward the store. She recognized him by his height and long
gait. Wind from the north ruffled his hair and brought a bone-biting chill to
her heart. Nuts, here he was, ducking his head to miss the bell overhead. It
tinkled, and a strange twisting sensation hit her in the stomach.

This
happened at the Kalua-Kona Food Emporium on a Sunday morning in July. She
stared from where she stood near the avocados. His dangerous edge drew her in,
but she turned her back to him. Her body reverberated like when her cellphone
was on vibrate in her pocket. Stunned with minor electric shock, she
froze.  Maybe he wouldn’t see her.  Wouldn’t recognize the back of her head or
the once familiar shape of her ass.

Was
someone waiting for him in the parking lot? Someone like Louella, the baby’s
momma who’d summoned him for an immediate DNA test? For a split second, she
craned her head around but didn’t see her with him.

She
and Danker were a couple when the test confirmed his fatherhood. Her heart
ached at the memory. Love hurt, but that wasn’t all. Loneliness hurt. Losing
someone hurt. Decision-making hurt when you force yourself to do the right
thing.

She’d
pulled away, giving him space to work on his previous relationship for the sake
of their child. The most shameful thing a woman can do is take parents away
from a baby, and this began her year of stubborn steadfastness.

I
did the breakup rituals. Got the dramatic haircut. Engraved a piece of jewelry
he got me with a new message. Deleted the photos that made me cry.

To
have been his woman was like living where the air flowered with jasmine, and
the weather day after day was flawless, but the forecast was a hurricane.

Dunskey Castle Series by Jane Stain

Tavish
Dunskey
Castle Book 1
by
Jane Stain

Genre:
Scottish Time Travel Romance

Tavish
was the best boyfriend Kelsey ever had, but seven years ago he
disappeared from her life. She coped with her heartbreak by finishing
her doctorate in Celtic Artifacts, and now her career is taking off.
But Tavish is back, acting like a stranger who knows more about
Celtic artifacts than she does. He's been on staff at every one of
her job sites in Scotland, wearing that stupid sexy kilt.

Seumas
Dunskey
Castle Book 2

Sasha
just got her dream job in the highlands of Scotland. Where her
friends ply her with celebratory champagne, throw a plaid cloak over
her business suit, and take her to the 14th century to do original
research on the dig site. She meets gorgeous highlander Seumas
("Shaymus") there, and — wait, is this a good idea?

Tomas
Dunskey
Castle Book 3

Tomas
was on top of the world. He had a hot girlfriend. She knew about time
travel, so he didn't have to keep secrets around her. So why did the
sight of his old friends Amber and Kelsey make him uncomfortable? His
girlfriend kept telling him to forget about them. But he couldn't. He
wished he knew why.

Time
of the Celts
Dunskey
Castle Book 4

Jaelle
dons a Roman helmet left among her ex's things and is transferred to
the Pictish Celt side of Hadrian's wall -- flat on the ground and
tripped over by Breth. The naked woad-painted warrior is being chased
by Romans who caught him scouting their fort. She earns his trust by
grabbing an injured Roman's sword, fighting beside Breth, and saving
his life. He takes her to his clan, where she sees druids in their
sacred grove imparting magical protection by painting the warriors'
nudity with muscle-activated woad pictures.

Time
of the Picts
Dunskey
Castle Book 5

Ignoring
phone calls from Kelsey, Jaelle thinks her first time travel
adventure was a dream, but a new museum display shows a stick figure
she remembers drawing with her fingernail file on the top stone of
Hadrian's Wall. Whoa, that means her time travel and meeting of the
dazzling warrior Breth and their fight with the barbarians at the
Roman fort really took place! She needs to get back to Breth!

Time
of the Druids
Dunskey
Castle Book 6

Deirdre's
first time travel assignment was challenging. Sure, she had her magic
dagger, but he wasn't cooperating.

Talorac
felt anxious about this meeting. A summons to the sacred grove had
always meant the druids would perform their woad magic to prepare him
for battle. So he was in no way prepared to make the acquaintance of
the woman he found there with them. Deirdre was beautiful, and a
warrior, and from the way she was flitting around the grove, she was
the most powerful druid he had ever heard of in his life.

Leif
Dunskey
Castle Book 7

Jessica's
friend tricks her into time traveling to 15th century Scotland. A
gorgeous highlander Jessica is sure is out of her league invites them
to stay at his manor house.

Leif
knows he should keep his mind on training the militia for the battle
that is sure to come soon. And after all, Jessica is just passing
through his town. But she is so compassionate he feels his heart
melting.

Taran
Dunskey
Castle Book 8

Lauren
has a magic dagger that gives her orders and sometimes stifles her
speech. It wants her to find some artifact here in 1400s Scotland and
give it to some druid friends.

She
wants to get to know Taran. But the dagger whispers that Taran is in
the way.

Taran's
life in a small town in Scotland was disrupted six months ago with
the arrival of Lauren and the other two lasses. Lauren knew the way
mechanical things worked in a way most astonishing. He never tired of
hearing her explain. But to find out she has a magick dagger that she
is in danger of losing her self control to? That shocks him.

Luag
Dunskey
Castle Book 9

Luag
and Katherine are two bullheaded people trying to "out stubborn"
each other. They've been verbally sparring in Medieval Scotland for
the past year. He's never met a headstrong woman before, and he is
such a stubborn male! When chance throws them forward to Katherine’s
time, he is the fish out of water. Understanding blooms, as does
love.

Meehall
Dunskey
Castle Book 10

Sarah’s
boss at Celtic University plonks an iron bracer on her desk. It
brings up one of Kelsey's magic druid dreams. In it, Sarah's ex,
Michael (Meehall in Gaelic), used this bracer as a time travel
object. And was a kilted highlander in 1700s Scotland.

At
lunch, Sarah's friends say they’re calling in sick tomorrow to
attend a local fair. They want her to call in sick too.

Sarah
isn’t keen on giving the bracer back. She wants revenge on Meehall
for breaking up with her and decides to use the bracer to have a bit
of fun.

She
tells her friends they don’t have to call in sick. She’s taking
them back in time.

Good
one!” they tell her, laughing.

Ciaran
Dunskey
Castle Book 11

Ciaran
arrives in the 21st Century with Eoin (John) in the darkness of the
Celtic University night. Ciaran is delighted to run into Nadia and
wants to stay and visit, but Eoin drags him away from her. Eoin is
extra grumpy, saying the Murrays need an edge because the Cameron
Clan is planning something big. Eoin sneaks the two of them into a
storage basement and seems inordinately glad to find a particular
halberd there.

Nadia
remembers the kilted warrior Ciaran from her experience in 1706
Scotland and secretly has a crush on him. Wherever he and Eoin are
going, she bets it will inspire her story for Celtic University's
historical society paper, especially if they are time traveling. She
sneaks into the back of the cart Ciaran and Eoin are driving and
hides under a blanket.

Baltair
Dunskey
Castle Book 12

Ellie
was captured during her last time travel adventure. But her friend's
husband's life hangs in the balance. And this ring she found is
giving her courage. Probably too much courage for a modern woman in
1706 to have.
Baltair
is glad to see Ellie again. Her friend married his cousin and stayed,
when Ellie went back to their time. But he keeps his distance. Many
will die in the upcoming battle, maybe including him.

Time
of the Fae
Dunskey
Castle Book 13

Suellen
and her friends ride a whirlwind onto a seacliff and panic. What
happened?

The
area is crawling with Highlanders who say they’re fighting the
Romans.
That
guy. The one they met at the Renaissance faire. They need to find
him.

Druids
or Faeries
Dunskey
Castle Book 14

Marybeth
frowned. "Dinna ye think it wrong, tae grab the faerie axe by
force?”

Ashley
batted the air as if what Marybeth had said was dismissible. "The
