Sleeping With the Enemy by Jackie Barbosa

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Jackie Barbosa will be awarding a $20 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

When Mrs. Laura Farnsworth discovers the blood-stained body of a man wearing the distinctive red coat of the British army, her first instinct is to let dead dogs lie. It has, after all, been just two days since the Battle of Plattsburgh, and the disposition of enemy corpses is hardly her purview. But then the man proves himself to be very much alive by grabbing her ankle and mumbling incoherently.

After almost twenty-five years in His Majesty’s service, Lieutenant Colonel Geoffrey Langston never expected to wake up in heaven, much less being tended by an angel. But when he regains consciousness in the presence of a beautiful, dark-haired woman and with no memory of how he came to be there, what else can he think? Except it’s rather odd for an angel to have an American accent.

As the long-widowed Laura nurses the wounded Geoffrey back to health, the attraction between them heats from a simmer to a boil. Bound by his oath to the British crown, Geoffrey should be working to find his way back to his regiment and from the, to England. Instead, he’s sleeping with the enemy…and thereby committing the crime of desertion if not treason. But then, who’s going to find out?

If only Geoffrey didn’t have a family back home who refuse to take “missing in action” for an answer.

Read an Excerpt

Well, that had been entirely inappropriate!

Flustered and overheated, Laura grabbed the empty wicker bread basket from the center of the heavy oak dining table and flopped into one of the nearby chairs, waving the basket in front of her face as a makeshift fan.

What on earth had come over her in there? One moment she had been engaged in the innocuous—although admittedly intimate—chore of giving a man a shave, and the next she had been seconds from lifting her skirts and riding him like a hobby horse.

Oh, very well, not quite like a hobby horse.

For heaven’s sake, she was a respectable widow with a nearly adult son, not a reckless girl in the first flush of infatuation. The last time she’d felt anything like this mad rush of desire, she had been nineteen and newly introduced to Samuel Farnsworth, the handsomest man she had ever met. Back then, she had not fully grasped the significance of the sensations that flooded her whenever she was with Samuel, just that she wanted more of them. Only after he introduced her to the pleasures of the marital bed did she appreciate how clever her body had been in recognizing her mate. Her only mate. Or so she had believed.

But now the handsomest man she had ever met slept in the bed she’d once shared with her husband, wearing nothing but a nightshirt, and she knew what she was missing. Truly understood the signals her body was sending her.

She wanted Lieutenant Colonel Geoffrey Langston.

About the Author:
I can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to be a writer when I grew up, but there were plenty of times when I wasn’t sure I ever would be. As it turns out, it just took me about twenty years longer to grow up than I expected!

On the road to publication, I took a few detours, including a stint in academia (I hold an MA in Classics from the University of Chicago and was a recipient of a Mellon Fellowship in the Humanities) and many years as a technical writer/instructional designer for a data processing company. I still hold my day job, but my true vocation has always been writing fiction and romance in particular.

I’m a firm believer that love is the most powerful force in the world, which that makes romance the most powerful genre in the world. Don’t ever let anyone tell you otherwise!

by S.R. Cronin

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Historical Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

It’s the 1200’s, and the small realm of Ilari has had peace and prosperity for generations. That doesn’t mean everyone is happy, however.

Ryalgar, a spinster farm girl and the oldest of seven, has always preferred her studies to flirtation, yet even she finally meets her prince. Or so she thinks, until she discovers he’s already betrothed. Embarrassed, she flees her family’s farm to join the Velka, the mysterious women of the forest known for their magical powers and for living apart from men.

As a Velka, she develops her telekinesis and learns she has a talent for analyzing information. Both are going to come in handy. For she’s continued to meet her prince at the forest’s edge, thinking being his mistress isn’t such a bad deal. Then she learns more about his princely assignment. He’s tasked with training the army of Ilari to repel the feared Mongol horseman who’ve been moving eastward for years, killing all in their path. And, her prince is willing to sacrifice the outer farmlands where she grew up to these invaders, if he has to.

Ryalgar isn’t about to let that happen.

She’s got the Velka behind her now, as well as a multitude of university intellectuals, a family of tough farmers, and six sisters each with her own unique personality and talents.

Can Ryalgar organize all that into a resistance that will stop the Mongols? She thinks she can.

Exclusive Excerpt

Coral and I had been close growing up, of course. There is almost no way two sisters less than a year apart are anything but. Yet, it was a closeness of convenience, even of necessity. Our next sister, Sulphur, was a year and a half younger than Coral and we both had less in common with her than with each other. Don’t get me wrong. Sulphur was easy to love, despite the unfortunate name my father saddled her with. But she was different from the rest of us, pretty much from the day she was born.

Coral and I grew up more like partners in crime than as friends. We were two girls working together to keep five little sisters out of trouble and two parents out of our hair. It was the way kids in a family usually worked together, whether they realized it or not. Family dynamics is everyone’s first and most basic lesson in social skills.

Once I entered the forest, I missed Coral more than I expected. I ran down the steps of the lodge to greet her and I was hugging her before she’d gotten her second leg completely off the little donkey.

“Careful.” She laughed at my uncharacteristic burst of affection but I knew she appreciated it. She’d missed me, too.

Over the next few days, the women I lived with gave us plenty of time and space to visit, and no one expected me at my classes while she was there. Later, it would occur to me each of them had a similar memory, a recollection of their first visit by a loved one from the old life.

Temptation personified.

She leaned over the railing to watch the goingson below, and Gage struggled to identify her expression. Grief? Loneliness? Wistfulness?

Some combination of all three?

As if sensing his gaze, she straightened, angling toward him.

She had caught him staring, and he wasn’t the least bit inclined to turn away. Even in the dim light, her eyes were an amazing light brown. Like brandy—smoky and smoldering. Short brown hair with bangs fringed a delicate face with high cheekbones. Light pink colored her lips, and he
admired their perfect bow shape. Something passed in her eyes, just a flash, but it spoke to him.

Unabashedly he shifted his gaze from her eyes and scanned her body. All-black clothing with stilettos at least three inches high complemented a lean shape with gentle curves around her breasts and hips. Wow, was he actually reacting to her nearness? Not just the subtle beauty, but her impression of a fawn waiting to startle at the slightest noise. A faerie who could disappear if he took his gaze away.

His fingers itched to touch, but that’d be against the rules. Admire? Yes. Touch? Oh hell, no.

VBT Baptism of Fire by Virginia Crow

Baptism of Fire
by Virginia Crow

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Thriller
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Kevin gripped Jilly’s coat and his voice became little more than a whisper. “I’m cursed, Jilly. Everyone who looks after me dies in a fire, or someone they love does. I don’t know how to stop it.”

When Rev. Alastair Roberts adopts Kevin Alderman, he dismisses any reference to the boy’s curse. But, as the pair spend more time in each other’s company, it becomes apparent that Kevin is not the only one with a bitter past.

As the past continues to haunt them, can they hope to change their future?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
Every twist in the road, every open patch where the bitter wind had caused a flash of ice across the tarmac, seemed like a battle he had to win. When the village lights came into view, after twenty minutes of driving a stretch which normally only took eight, he muttered an appreciative prayer and drove across the village to Mrs Henderson’s house. His smile was firmly on his face, and his relief even caused him to laugh.
His laughter faded as he turned the corner onto the quiet road where Mrs Henderson’s cottage was. It wasn’t quiet now. Blue lights filled the street, and Alastair stopped the car as a police officer appeared, lifting her hand to stop him. He turned off the ignition and climbed out of the car.
“What happened?” he whispered, looking at the fire engine which towered almost as high as the small cottage’s eaves. The cottage windows closest to him were smashed, but the house was not where the fire had been. The burnt-out remnants of the car, still in the drive, told the story. “Is Mrs Henderson alright?”
“Are you family, sir?” the policewoman asked.
“No,” Alastair replied. “I’m her priest. Her son sent me to find her. Is she Okay?”
Interview with Virginia Crow
1. What is your favorite part of this book and why?
This probably sounds a little bit strange, but my favourite parts are actually the everyday bits. I think writers – myself included – can sometimes fall into the trap of losing all humanity from characters because we want the plot to move forward at a crazy speed. The fact is, life has some fantastically human aspects which can be easily overlooked. The sweet little conversations which are held between Kevin and Alastair helped to take these two names off the page and create them into real people. Having these little exchanges between my two main characters uses the ordinary to prepare for the extraordinary!
2. If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?
I think it would have to be Alastair. Although, what would be really cool would be a jamming session with him, Jilly, and even little Kevin too! It’s no coincidence that all three of my main characters are musical, when music is such a huge part of my life (I’m a private music teacher). We could have a jam in the church – amazing acoustics! - and then go out for a meal. Although, Alastair is a pretty good cook, so maybe back to his house for a meal. And we’d round off the evening with a mug of hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows. They drink a lot of hot chocolate!
3. If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?
Probably A Christmas Carol. It’s not my favourite book – though I do love it – but I love how ingrained it has become in our culture. I hope, one day, people will make everyday reference to something from one of my books, just like we do with the story of Ebenezer Scrooge!
4. Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?
None of my characters are wholly either. Often they begin life as a cluster of emotions and mannerisms drawn from my imagination. Then it’s quite normal for me to think that one of them reminds me of someone I know, and so I put a bit of that someone into them. Alastair from Baptism of Fire is a really good example of this, because I only vaguely knew him to begin with but, by the end of writing the book, he really reminded me of someone I knew.
A lot of the settings are based on real places, though!
5. What made you want to become a writer?
I realised a long time ago that I wanted to write books. When I was a child I used to watch TV so much my parents decided to get rid of the television! After that, my imagination came to life. While most of my friends were playing computer games or playing sports, I was formulating stories.
It’s never stopped. I have so many stories in my head, and a hundred tales to tell. And inspiration comes from all over the place, from people, music, places and so much more! I’m never without a story. The only way I can bear to finish one book, is to have another lined up and ready waiting.
In terms of writing as a career, though, that’s a no-go for me! I write my best work when I’m stealing odd hours at a time. Besides, I love being a music teacher!
GENRE:   Erotic Romance
Beth Andrews has given up on ever finding a happily-ever-after. Still smarting from a bitter divorce, she’s decided the only thing she truly needs is sex.
Unfortunately, wanting sex and actually finding it are two very different things.
Jonathan Tucker is perfectly satisfied with his bachelor lifestyle. He has a wonderful career, a kick-ass new condo, and any woman he wants. As often as he wants. At twenty-seven, he’s convinced he’s living life exactly as it should be.
Will the older, albeit sexy, ad executive and the handsome, talented artist both find there’s more to life than what they have now? Or, will they be satisfied with what the both claim to want—d*mn near perfect sex!
Read an Excerpt
Beth couldn’t sit still. Not only was she on edge about a new client, but her lack of physical contact was really starting to get on her nerves. This had to be a sign of middle age or, heaven help her, menopause because all she could think about was sex. Or, her lack thereof.
What didn’t make sense was this sudden awareness, the realization that she missed sex. Her marriage had never been overly active in that regard. So, why now?
She blamed it on the guy who lived above her. He was like a rabbit in heat and in bad need of an oil can for his bed springs. If she closed her eyes, she could imagine him going at it...fast...rough...making his conquest for the night scream with delight.
“Are you ready to go?” Maddie, a close friend from Tuesday yoga class, drew Beth from her salacious thoughts.
“Yes,” she responded. “More ready than I’ve ever been.”
“They say this new club is fan-dam-tastic.” Maddie stopped at the door to Beth’s office and took one last glimpse in the oval mirror on the wall, fluffing her naturally curly blonde hair and pursing her bright red lips together in a half-pout.
Beth stopped, as Maddie had, and shot a grimace in the general direction of her rather subdued appearance. “I hope so, Mads. I really need a night of fun.”
“True ‘nuff, girlfriend, true ‘nuff.”
VBT Sub-lebrity by Leon Acord
Sub-lebrity
by Leon Acord
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:   Memoir

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
A droll, oddly inspirational memoir from the actor Breitbart once called "a gay leftist activist," SUB-LEBRITY by Leon Acord (Old Dogs & New Tricks) is an honest, sometimes bitchy but always sincere story about growing up (very) gay in rural Indiana, achieving acting success outside the closet, and generating headlines with his very-public smackdown with Trump-loving Susan Olsen (Cindy, The Brady Bunch)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt Two:

With Laurence’s encouragement, I signed up for a commercial-casting workshop with the Bay Area’s leading commercial casting director Beau Bonneau.  I’d auditioned for him so often the past few years, we were on a friendly first-name basis.

The workshop was a breeze.  I nailed every exercise.  Beau was quite complimentary after each one.  But that only deepened the mystery.

At the end of the workshop, as the dozen or so of us prepared to leave, Beau asked me to stick around for a moment.

Wow!  Maybe he’s casting something he thinks I’d be good for!

He busied himself gathering up sides as actors left.  Once it was just us, Beau approached me with the gravitas of a doctor about to deliver a cancer diagnosis.

Oh my god.  He’s going to tell me I suck!

“So, listen, Leon,” he began.  “I shouldn’t say this. It could get me into a lot of trouble.”

Is he gay?  Is he going to hit on me?

“But I really think you should know.  You’re wasting your time with workshops.”

I suck!

“You know how to do this.”

Where the hell is he going with this?

“You have the skills, charisma and timing and warmth needed for commercials but –”

He took a deep breath.  (As did I.)

“But you won’t get booked.  Because … well…”  He took another deep breath.  “Leon, the truth is, you scare advertisers.  Because, damn it, you’re just too gay.”

 My thoughtful repose seemed to unnerve him.  He clearly had expected an outburst.

I suppose I could have had one.  I could’ve pointed out I’d played occasional straight roles.  I could’ve accused him and the entire commercial industry of homophobia.

But I admired Beau’s bravery.  He really did go out on a limb.  I always prefer honesty.  And, most importantly, I was relieved to finally hear, out loud, a reason why I wasn’t booking commercials.

“Thank you, Beau.  That took guts.  I appreciate your honesty.”

The relieved look on his face was priceless.

Interview with Leon Acord
1. What is your favorite part of this book and why?
You know, SUB-LEBRITY originally had a bleaker ending, about how much technology has changed show business from what it was when I first began acting. But then, as I was finishing the book, my TV series Old Dogs & New Tricks [Amazon Prime] was honored by a prestigious film festival in Indianapolis, Indy Shorts – and I’m from Indiana! It was probably the most incredible week of my life. It was a perfect ending for my book, better than if I’d planned it! It gave SB-LEBRITY a much happier ending!
2. If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?
My God, what an impossible question! I only get to pick one? Well, I can’t choose between my two grandmothers, so I’ll go with actor/playwright/director Jeffrey Hartgraves, who passed in 2008. He directed me several times, and we’d frequently go bar crawling after rehearsal or a performance.  Man, I’d love one more night of debauchery with Jeffrey again. He truly was the sharpest, funniest man I have ever met or worked with – and I know some very funny mo-fos! (laughs)
3. If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?
My problem with that question is, I enjoy both literature and trash. I’m a Gemini. I think Bob Randall’s The Fan (1977) is dishy and gossipy yet incredibly smart and well-plotted and well-written. Since it covers both sides, I’ll go with that one. Or maybe Grace Metalious’ Peyton Place. It’s beautiful writing but was considered absolute grade-d trash in 1956.
4. Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?
Well, SUB-LEBRITY is a memoir. So, all the characters are real people. Only some of the names have been changed to protect my ass.

5. What made you want to become a writer?
I never really wanted to “be” a writer. In fact, I would resist it whenever my parents suggested journalism was a more viable prospective career than show biz. (Sadly, these days, its equally hard to make a living in either.) But it's something I could always to, and enjoyed, and took for granted. It really wasn’t until college that I realized most people aren’t good at it, and don’t enjoy doing it. I had a professor who finally made that clear to me. So, I guess in a way, I’ve always been a “writer; its only in the past 10 years that I began to take writing much more seriously. Ironically, I enjoy it even more now!
