What could happen? Little does she know, there are characters in and out of the ashram that turn her goals inside out, but she gets to keep her healthy skepticism.

I’m already attracted to all of the audiobook listeners who will love A Texan Goes to Nirvana because, well why wouldn’t I be? Were I to run across a title like that on Audible, especially being a native Texan, the title alone would make me spit up some laughter and cause me to wonder why in the hell a Texan would want to go to Nirvana in the first place. And, you’re curious, aren’t you? I’d be fairly certain that some insanity and hilarity would ensue on the protagonist’s way to enlightenment, so I’d put that audiobook right in my ‘cart’ and check out!

When one thinks of Nirvana, a Texan is not the first seeker who might come to mind. Maybe I could see a Vermonter…Vermontan…Vermontinian, oh hell…you know who you are, and you would go to an ashram sooner than I, wouldn’t you?

There is a dichotomy twixt Texans and ashrams. That’s like putting okra in curry. Nobody puts okra in curry…oops, I just Googled that, and damned if I didn’t immediately run up against a recipe for curried okra. Yuck!

Know that this nutty, comic mystery is ‘loosely’ based on an actual hellish month that I spent at a real ashram nestled in the backwoods of Virginia in order to procure a yoga teaching certificate. And, from just reading to this point, you can guess that I might have kept a journal…again, wouldn’t you?? I had packed some serious skepticism in my suitcase, and from that cynical diary sprang Wendy Tate, Mountain, Nanandaji and her swami hoes, hillbillies, the FBI and the Swami man, himself.

What could go wrong?

It’s a good thing Lion’s not a slam-bam-thank-you-ma’am, Tennessee man. Our king’s about to show his queen that while life can sometimes be a bit of a rollercoaster ride, the best thing you can do is lock in tight and throw your hands in the air—and live.

More than this, she needs to believe in herself and that she has something to offer as queen.

Steady comes when two people are together and showing each other that home isn’t a place, work isn’t your life, and what they offer each other goes deeper than material things. The Cat Who Ate His Tail by Jacqueline Simon Gunn

The Cat Who Ate His Tail

Jacqueline Simon Gunn

Genre: Animal Fiction, Women’s Fiction, Psychological Fiction

Date of Publication: November 15, 2019

ISBN: 978-1699608081
ASIN: B07ZY6VZNH

Number of pages: 324
Word Count: 76,059

Book Description:

Have you ever wondered what your pets are thinking?

Inspired by true events, this heartwarming story is told from the perspective of Sneakers, a curious cat with serious emotional baggage. Neglected and ultimately abandoned by his original owner, he compensates for the trauma by overeating and making droll observations about the crazy love life of his new owner… who also happens to be a psychologist.

Through paying attention to her work, the loving home she provides and watching her own trials and tribulations, Sneakers learns so much more about life, love and the ways of the world. Both their lives take unexpected turns, both suffer for their own inability to see their inherent worth. But just maybe they can help each other learn the most important lesson of all before it’s too late: If you let it, love can heal even the deepest wounds.

Sometimes you must be willing to take that second chance.

Excerpt:

“I love her,” he
raised his voice. His feet were right next to the couch. Please, don’t make me
kill you. I’d be the cat who ate his tail and killed a human on the Upper
Eastside. This would not look good for me. They’d judge me based on the tail
incident and assume the murder was due to my instability, never considering the
duress that preceded his demise.
That’s why he
was living with a shrink. Nut job. I heard the newscasters saying.
My eyes followed
his feet. He bent down, glaring at me underneath the couch, and yelled, “I love
her. You hear me. Just because she isn’t the girl I want to spend my life with
doesn’t mean I don’t love her.”
What kind of
catnip was he sniffing? Leave her alone then.
I stared back at
him, my heart pounding even harder.
I heard
rummaging. From his shadow, I thought he was in her desk. Probably trying to
sift through her drawers. Maybe looking for notes or things she’d written down,
so he knew what she was thinking. Then the couch bounced as he plopped down
onto the middle cushion. I wondered how this was going to go down when she came
home and found him. Which would be worse: finding him dead or alive, I
wondered. But before I had to choose, he got up, and I heard him fumbling
around in the kitchen, and then the front door closed.
I waited an
ample amount of time, inhaling to get my breathing even, then strutted into the
kitchen, sniffing around where he’d left his sour scent, the only evidence of
him being here. I knew humans’ sense of smell wasn’t as strong. I wondered if
my mom would know just by intuition that Moby had come. I thought of ways I
might communicate it to her. I was lying on my chair ruminating about this when
I heard my mom turning the doorknob, then her voice mixing with that of a
strange man’s.
I took a heavy
breath. What a stressful night. Now I had to scrutinize the new guy while
figuring out how to tell her about Moby’s appearance. I was exhausted and
crashing from the adrenalin of what had happened earlier.
“What’s wrong,
handsome?” She kneeled beside me, rubbing my head. Looking up at this new tall
man-human who had a warm smile, she explained, “He always greets me at the
door. Something feels weird in here.”
“Whadaya mean?”
“Like someone
was here.”
“Like a
break-in? “Or like a ghost?”
She looked
around. “Nothing looks out of place on first glance. Do you believe in ghosts?”
“I do, and I
think cats see them. Maybe he saw something.”
“He does look
spooked by something, doesn’t he?”
“It’s hard to
tell.” He bent down and rubbed my head. “He is a good-looking cat.” He rubbed
under my neck. “Did you see something?” he asked me.
“Maybe they see
things that aren’t there. Maybe he thought he saw something.” She wore a
perplexed looked, but it got me thinking and wondering if that ghost thing was
possible.
Maybe I was
losing my mind. Was Moby here or did I imagine the whole thing because the idea
of him haunted me?
Gosh, maybe that last catnip pillow was laced
with something.

About the Author:

Jacqueline Simon Gunn is a Manhattan-based clinical psychologist and writer. She has authored two non-fiction books, and co-authored two others. She has published many articles, both scholarly and mainstream, and currently works as a freelance writer. Gunn is now writing psychological fiction. Always in search of truth and fascinated by human behavior, her fiction writing, like psychology, is a way for her to explore human nature — motivation, emotions, relationships.

In addition to her clinical practice and writing, Gunn is an avid runner and reader. Gunn is currently working on multiple writing projects, including a spin-off of “Forever and One Day,” the third book in the Where You’ll Land series and a book written from her cat’s POV.

Interview with Jacqueline Simon Gunn
Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story?
My characters are definitely in the driver’s seat. I never know where they’ll go. In fact, I have rewritten scenes in hopes that characters will make better decisions, but no matter how I write the narrative, my characters seem to disregard any adjustments and persistent in their own direction. Fiction writing, for me, is a lot about surrendering.

Convince us why you feel your book is a must read.
The Cat Who Ate His Tail is a unique story that has many layers, but at its core it is a story about life, love and self-acceptance as told by my cat. Sneakers is a sympathetic character. And I believe that all of his struggles, whether they are general life and love related, or more complex emotional obstacles, like having to overcome being the cat who ate his tail (true story), are relatable. Perhaps, showing more vulnerable traits through a cat instead of a human makes him even easier to empathize with. You will laugh. You will cry. You will relate to the universal themes in Sneakers’ journey. And you will find, through the story, just how life is filled with unrealized second chances.
Have you written any other books that are not published?
I have two drafts that are not published yet. My next release is a spin-off from my book, Forever and One Day, and will be out this spring. The second is book 3 in my Where You’ll Land series. I just finished the first draft. It still needs a lot of work, but I hope to have it out by the end of summer.
Pen or type writer or computer?
Computer.
Anything you would like to say to your readers and fans?
When I started writing fiction, I began with a dark romance/psychological thriller series, which was inspired by my background in forensic psychology. It was fascinating being inside the head of a character who transformed from a seemingly loving, even-mannered woman into a maniacal murdered. The deeper I got into her character and her psychology the more disturbing the writing became, still fascinating, but also incredibly dark, deranged, and so real.
When I finished the series, I needed to write something different. I wanted to explore themes that were not so dark and write characters who were struggling with issues that were more common. So, I did a 360 and wrote a sweeping love story/family drama. I continued after that to write a number of books that are a mix of love story, women’s fiction and psychology of relationships. The next book that’s writing itself in the back of my mind is nonfiction (which is where my writing journey began a long time ago). I write what I’m inspired to share and that changes sometimes.
What ties my work together is psychology. My writing focuses heavily on my characters, their psychological make-up, what motivates them and how they are affected by the other characters. There are always deeper psychological themes. I try to write in a way where there are windows to think more deeply if so inspired and characters who are real and relatable, while also creating stories full of drama to keep the pages turning. I am so grateful to have readers who have followed me through all of these changes. I hope to continue to reward your support and interest with stories that delve deep into the mind and emotional life of people/characters, while delivering narratives full of action and angst.
